Our Kitchen
We do not have to choose off a menu Well we have arrived in Western Australia and after a good nights sleep we decided that we should go and explore Fremantle which is where we are staying around 35 minutes outside Perth. I decided that I would not book us a hotel as they are so expensive over here and found this great little cottage on the internet. Wow what a place and it even has its own kitchen. Which I know sounds silly but we have not been able to cook anything since July so every time we want a meal we have to look at a menu - this can get really tedious you know.
Well anyway off we pop to find the bus to take us into Fremantle which is a lovely little town. The first thing that hits us in this part of Australia is it so clean and quiet and everyone we meet comes from another country and are not Australian!
We go to the Maritime Museum first as it appears most people i.e. convicts came into Australia via Fremantle and also Fremantle's claim to fame is that it held the series of races of the America's cup in 1987 and in the
Museum is the actual boat. We also booked a tour in a submarine - all I can say is OMG there is no space at all inside a submarine so if you can remember the film Red October it does not quite show the real space that men had to actually work and live in.
It was absolutely brilliant tour if I am totally honest - anyone coming to Fremantle you MUST do this tour. So we decide to get a bite to eat and look at the map to see where we should go next and low and behold we see a street that is called Fairbairn - yes, that's our surname. Not only that guess where the street leads up to, you guessed it the Fremantle Jail. I always knew Mike had some convict tendencies, ha ha. Then I read that the street is named after Fairbairn as he was the magistrate so I am proved wrong again. The jail has now been condemned as there was a riot in 1988 where the prisoners tried to set the building alight and the arch to get into the jail was not big enough for the fire engine to
drive through and there was a load of media attention about the jail not having health and safety checks being completed on it for years. We did the "Doing Time" tour and it was really enlightening and very informative.
We are back on the bus today as we are going to explore Perth and see if we can find a real live Australian, ha ha.
I wish we had booked at least a week here as we are going to hardly touch this part of Australia before flying off to Alice Springs but hey ho hindsight is a wonderful thing.
Hope everyone is ok.
