Today we woke up in new surroundings, our 51/2 month house sit had come to a close and we were handing it back to Bob and Shirley who arrived home from their cruise all safe and sound. The house was cleaned top to bottom and it all seemed to hand over nicely, they were lovely people, farming folk who let us look after their huge house and beautiful gardens for a lovely long spell, so this year, so far all we have done is house sit with a few trips away camping in Gypsy. Because of Caroline’s very lengthy commute, a few weeks ago we decided to take a holiday chalet in Freemantle, (Freo) as everyone calls it, so with all our stuff packed up we left Bob and Shirley’s in Greenfields around 1.30 and arrived ... read more

Firstly I am going to apologise to you for this blog as it would be fair to say that it has absolutely nothing to do with travel and as this is a travel blog, I would accept it if you grumbled. But!! Kangaroojack has blogged our adventures for over six years now, telling the story of our new life in Australia so though not a travel related story, this is considered still part of our amazing adventure, and we have always been able to pride ourselves on telling you just how it happened, without any bells and whistles, without exaggeration or ridicule. Equally with regards to the related subject of this blog, I can assure you that I have not taken this lightly or even flippantly, as I’m sure you may have a friend, relative or ... read more

And so to Perth, where we stayed with Niall + Hannah in Fremantle. Looked after rightly by them! All started with a home cooked meal prepared by Hannah! Next day we explored Fremantle, stumbled upon the monument dedicated to Bon Scott, who lived in Fremantle, and then headed into Perth. Explored the city and started searching for Brennan relatives who moved out here in the late 1800’s. We visited the old “House of Brennan” department store, which is now disappointingly a shoe shop with none of the old features. Had an excellent night in the Little Creatures Brewery in Fremantle and sampled a few of their finest, which was great preparation for the next morning – a trip across to Rottnest Island on the Express Ferry. The Ferry was a bit of a vomit comet. They ... read more

PIRATE FOR A LITTLEWING DAY...The "Duyfken". I only knew one pirate until the other day. Denise and I met her for Travelblog's 2013 Sydney Get-together with Jo Trouble, RJT, John & Sylvia and JetSet. We knew of her in the ether as Littlewing...but got to know her as Cindy...travelled from Perth to join us. We went on a tall ship in Sydney Harbour...a photo exhibition...chocolate indulgence...to Camelot for Gypsy swing...our place for boules and feasting...down in the gorge...then diving with sharks. She wasn't a pirate then. Then she returned to Perth. Started getting strange messages after that. She'd joined the crew of a tall ship out of Fremantle in Western Australia...sentry duty at night...piratey sorts of things...living the dream. So when I planned to visit Perth a few weeks ago...I gave her a hoy's hoy. ****** ... read more

Sunday 27th April - left Bridgetown en route to Fremantle but stopped at Mullalyup Gardens at Kirup (some 20 km off the beaten track). This was a 4 acre gem of a Japanese style garden started by Lloyd some 25 years ago - a wonderful oasis full of very tame birds darting in and out of so many different trees and bushes - even Lloyd couldn't remember what they all were. The lakes were full of different water lilies as well as floating cedar trees each adrift on their own island moving across the lake in the breeze. Spent a lot longer than intended so didn't reach Freemantle and had to freedom camp in a rest area overnight just outside Bunbury. Weather on the change with strong winds and heavy squalls of rain - first rain ... read more

So we arrived in Perth and headed straight to Fremantle for a few nights where. Brad had already been before. We thought we'd be able to find some accommodation there, we were hoping for an apartment for the 2 months so we would have a base and a bit of a home to be able to cook and not eat out all the time. But it wasn't so easy, everything was either very very expensive or had a lease limit of 3 months so we didn't really get to relax in Fremantle as we were spending the whole time looking for somewhere to stay. Although brad did take me to an amazing mussel restaurant overlooking the harbour which was pretty nice for lunch but it was back to business pretty quickly. We didn't find anywhere in ... read more

As travellers, we blog about and form opinions on a tourist attraction, but what happens when you become one? After our Sydney TB get together where the wonderful Leila and Dave organised a sail on the Soren Larsen for me I came home and sent about the 40th request for volunteer crew positions on our little tall ship, The Duyfken. Finally today, amidst the horror that is renovating my house, my crewing position became a reality. I have now become a fully fledged tall ship sailor and..a tourist attraction. A little about our ship first. She is a replica of a 1596 Dutch VOC trading company ship who forged her way from the Netherlands to the spice islands. As she is a small ship - only 25m long - her job was to act as look ... read more

"Mountains are the means, the man is the end. The goal is not to reach the tops of mountains, but to improve the man." ... read more
