Now that we had the ‘Crocovan’ we were desperate to test it out not just for the purposes of how comfortable and practical it was but if it was safe and would indeed take us from a to b! We had met a couple of people at the hostel, Richard 26 from the Midlands but living in Wales and Dana 23 from Bavaria Germany, both of them were bored in Perth much like us and had planned a one week trip to travel the South western loop down to Albany. They had hired a car and invited us to join them for the trip. Excellent idea as this meant that if we did run into any unexpected trouble we were travelling with others who could help. We were leaving the next morning and it was dark ... read more

... read more

AN AMBLE IN ALBANY The day was overcast but dry and mild. We docked around eight and a shuttle bus was available to take us the short distance into Albany pronounced as in “you can call me Al”. Australians will point out that it is NOT the capital of New York. The bus drops us off at the top of the main drag and will pick us up at the foot of the hill. This works particularly well for the folks who are older and can’t walk too far. Across from the stop is a park where local crafts are displayed and a two man Dixie land jazz duo entertains the crowd with Satin Doll and Take the A Train etc. It was great to sit there listening and watching the folks. At Town Hall there ... read more

Hi all From the Stirling Ranges we drove north. Our first stop was at a Lily Dutch Windmill - a 16th century replica, with sail length 24.6 metres. Lunch was at Lake Grace, and we passed quite a few salt lakes and grain silos, as we entered the Wheat Belt. There were also lots of roadtrains transporting grain to Albany for shipping. It got hotter, the further north we went. We stayed at Wave Rock Caravan Park which was great, so we could walk to Wave Rock at sunset and again early in the morning. We walked all over the rock, which was much bigger than we expected. It had small walls 2' high above it to direct rainwater into the reservoir. In the morning we walked again to Wave Rock and on to the Hippo's ... read more

4-3-10 Thursday, Up & at it today as we had to do groceries , get gas, fill up gas bottles, get bearings for jockey wheel, a new TV cord , Blah, Blah, Blah !!! All finished with & the girls in the van since 9am we headed for The Whale World, it was a good & interesting day, It is amazing , it was Australia’s last Whaling Station & closed in Nov 1978. With many interesting exhibits, I am glad to see the end of such a horrible, but probably necessary industry for the time. Dennis was fascinated with the steam engines & the Whaling Ship Cheynes IV which we could climb over. We saw the processing factory, the Shark , Spectravision Theatre, & the 3 D Giants Exist movies, all good. We had lunch at ... read more

After a surprisingly good night’s sleep, we woke to a glorious sunrise, still pinching ourselves that we’re in Australia! We started the day with a leisurely stroll along the beach and were greeted with the fantastic site of two beautiful horses bathing in the distance. Another surprise was seeing cuttlefish washed up on the beach - exactly the same as we stuck in the budgie’s cage as children - amazing what memories little things can spark! Had a chat to a few more folk down on the main site and got some good tips on how to make your money stretch. We eventually set off for a good look around the area. Our first stop was McDonalds, mainly as they have free WiFi! After 3 blog updates however we felt we should move on. Dear reader, ... read more

Met the lady on the other side of us this morning who’s a seasoned traveller from Oz and really helped firm up our plans based on her experience. We’re doing a long drive down to Albany on the South Coast today and will then slowly work our way back up to Perth along the coast road over the next 9 days. However, first she recommended we hunt down a copy of “Camps Australia Wide 5” which gives details of numerous free sites across the county which will save us a fortune. One shopping centre, a newsagent, and two camping suppliers later we had the book. The 5 hour trek to Albany really gave us a good idea of the scale of this country. We spent around 90 minutes on the freeway with nothing to look at ... read more

Hi Since leaving Pemberton we drove a short distance south and had a night at another historic mill town, Northcliffe, with karri and redgum forests surrounding it. From there we drove to the coast, and explored the pretty beaches , including Windy Harbour, and lookouts. Salmon Beach was a favourite. There were kangaroos around our campsite in the trees. It was 32 degrees, but had been 24 at the coast. Next day we headed east to Walpole, and got the last campspot at Coalmine Beach. From there we drove to the Valley of the Giants and did the Tree Top Walk among the tingle trees. We drove a 4WD track to Circular Pool on our way back to the van. There are lots of 4WD tracks in this area, through forest and out to the beaches. ... read more
