Weather-wise the south-west of WA has been very cool (low 20s most of the time) but we're not complaining. Sleeping is much easier and this morning we didn't stir until after 8:30 and that has been by far the latest we've slept-in since late December. We made it to Albany by late morning and set up shop in a caravan park at nearby Emu Point. During the afternoon we decided to go out for dinner; a bit of a novelty considering it hasn't happened since last year. Trip advisor provided us with a few options and we narrowed it down to an Indian restaurant called the Curry Leaf. I thought I should try and look respectable so I did away with the shorts and got into some jeans and a new shirt (kind of weird not ... read more

The day started reasonably slowly as we purchased a few more camping items on our way out of town and we waved goodbye to Esperance. All in all the most enjoyable place we have stayed on the journey thus far. Next stop – Albany. A 500 kilometre trek was daunting a few weeks back but we are clearly building up the tolerance to long road travel as we breezed through most of the day. Nothing new to see on the way as we were backtracking after driving through Albany just last week. We stopped about 120 kms out of Albany for the last stop of the day but as we progressed it was evident the driver (ie me) had failed to fuel up and the tank was nearing empty. The only option was to head 19 ... read more

After organising a national parks pass on our way out we headed about 40 km out of Esperance to Cape Le Grand National Park. The weather was fine and sunny for the first time on our stay in this neck of the woods and it certainly added to the ambience of the Park. First stop was Lucky Bay and the views along the pristine coastline were simply magnificent. We decided on a hike to nearby Thistle Cove which took us over granite rocks and we zigged and zagged along makeshift paths. There was almost a photo opportunity at every turn including a few we managed to get of some rather large yet passive lizards who seemed more unfazed of us than we were of them. It was about a 90 minute round trip back to Lucky ... read more

Today we set out to ride up to the Rotary Lookout to check out a few local tourist attractions as well as continue to gain momentum on the exercise front. There was as much walking as there was riding on the way up due to a very steep incline (I'm a long way off of being referred to as king of the mountains). The lookout over the township was pretty impressive with 360 degree views out to the horizon. A much speedier ride back to town after we finished up and I certainly gave my brakes a good workout on the decline. Back to the campsite for a late lunch/early tea as we decided to take advantage of tight arse Tuesday at the local cinemas in the evening. We jumped back on the deadly treadlys and ... read more

R & R was the order of today and it freshened us up in more ways than one. It's actually as cool as it comes for a summer day and has sent us searching the van for jackets and jeans. The strong sea breeze is ripping through the caravan park (when we start heading north into more humid climates I am sure we'll be begging for this sort of relief). We took the bikes out for a ride along the foreshore this morning and made our way into the town centre for a peak. Very laid back little town; the sort you can contently spend hours on end doing nothing much without feeling like you've wasted the day. I think we'll do much of the same tomorrow......... read more

Hi everyone Yesterday we drove to Albany which is 400km from Dunsborough. It was a cold and windy 19 degrees which was a bit of a shock after leaving mid 30's temperatures. You wouldn't have known it was summer. We have been hearing the news that Brisbane is underwater again. We hope everyone is safe. We are resigned to the fact that we will have had water through the garage and office but there's not much we can do about it expect clean up. After last year we're really good at it :-) We came to Albany so that peter could visit the local whiskey distillery. I enjoyed the coffee and the Internet connection. It is unusual for a distillery to be so civilised. This one, the Great Southern distillery http://www.distillery.com.au/ was very much more friendly ... read more

Cheyne Beach/ Albany 9th January 2012 Leaving Hopetoun we retraced our route back towards Albany to Cheyne Beach. We had intended to go to Bremer Bay which we understand is another great spot along the coast. However as it is a 70klm one way trip in off the main coast road I decided to ring first to ensure that we could get a site. “yes we can accommodate you on those dates sir” “great” I reply “and how much is a site?” (In the Top Tourist Park book they quote prices of $32 - $38/night) His reply was apologetic..” well, it is our high season and Uhmm the price for a powered site will be…Uhmm…$60 per night” “right” I say, “then I guess you know what you can do with your site then as we are ... read more

6 - 19 December 2011 As we continued along the southern coast of WA, we fell more and more in love with the area. We based ourselves at Parry Beach to indulge our senses around the Walpole-Nornalup area as well as the beautiful Denmark. Whilst at Parry Beach, we had light rain most of our time there but it didn't dampen our experience in the forests. We also met several other young families who were travelling and doing much the same as us. We've been on the road a year now and met one young travelling family up until now and at Parry's we met three in the one camp spot. It's great to chat with them and pick up some tips and ideas regarding travel spots and "kid stuff". We spent a day in Denmark ... read more

Walpole to Albany Leaving Walpole we headed back east to Albany to complete the section of the Sthn Ocean Hwy across to Hopetoun that we had missed previously when we went up to Wave Rock after our stay in Esperance. We are looking forward to this section of the coast as the beaches between Albany and Hopetoun come with some ‘big wraps’. Our journey through to Denmark was uneventful and we enjoyed, again, the magnificent forests that enveloped the road. From Denmark across to Albany the country changed as we left the mountains and forests behind us into undulating mixed farmland. Agriculture is diverse here with cropping playing a major role but beef and dairy farming, horticulture and vineyards are also well represented. After several weeks of country driving and only ‘biggish’ towns to navigate, it ... read more
