After 75 days and 14612 driving kms later (add another 2692kms for the Sundlander making a total 17304 kms travelled) we have arrived home safely. Our time on the Mornington Peninsula passed too quickly - it is a lovely place and one to be revisited. Phil caught up with a very old school friend and I a very old work colleague/friend. Finally managed to score a market at Mornington - they had eluded me the whole trip! Enjoyed the browsing. Phil got to have the world famous vanilla slice at Sorrento ( a whole $8!) - unfortunately for its reputation it was pipped at the post by a later one at Hahndorf. 21 May - on to Wheelers Hill and the Whittles and what I thought would be the highlight of the trip for Phil - ... read more

Hard to believe that one month has passed since I last sat down in Kurunda to add to this blog. We are now in Dromana, Mornington Peninsula - many driving miles and days away. We are on the last two weeks of our journey - given that we have now added a couple of extra days for Kangaroo Island to our trip (thank you to our house/dogsitters who have advised that they are in no hurry to vacate out home!) Will start back at the beginning - of this segment. Not impressed with the Kuranda Markets. Still location of the Cabin was great - and we did get to see some of the local wildlife..... Left Kuranda for Cairns - returned hire car. Did a bit of touristing - but wet and not miserable so mainly ... read more

Left Bundaberg on the Sunlander train around 7.30 on Thursday night. Phil obviously had visions of the Desert Express (Namibia- Southern Africa) so was somewhat disappointed about the quality of the train........no quiet club lounge to slowly sip a Pimms; no starched white table clotheon dining table with three course meal being served by trained staff! Just a toasted ham sandwich taken in a crowded, noisy and dirty eating cabin. Dark out so not able to see the view from the train which appeared to be the back end of buildings and deep cuttings.........................daylight and we were into canefields and more canefields. Fortunately I had a touch of tummy so was able to spend the day in the cabin taking it easy. Phil adjourned to the lounge cabin (see comment above re quality) with his headache ... read more

Now on day 20 of the trip - reverting back to day 5 in Charleville. Another nothing (but relaxing) day followed by a great Thai meal. Phil did a few jobs for Julie - hung mirror and put shelves into laundry cupboard - just cannot keep a good man down when there is handyman work to be done! During our time in Charleville managed to come to grips with Skype so able to catch up and see the grandchildren (as well as Maria - great talking to/seeing you.) Was great to see Bill catch up with his daughter via Skype. Phil topped up the petrol in preparation for our drive out the next day to Bundaberg ($69.31 - 48.90l @141.9cpl). Have I mentioned the great meal I made for sister, Julie........a family favourite which no one ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Queensland » Charleville March 29th 2010

We are on day eleven of our trip. Unfortunately no opportunity to do the blog until we arrived in Charleville and then needed a day or two to recover from the 4000km trip. As planned we left Perth at 6.20 on Saturday morn (20/3) thanks to Phil's organisation the day before. Car all packed up and ready to go. We are travelling in a Toyota Avalon. With our whoopie cushions, Phil's backrest and my foot rest the drive is very comfortable. The car fridge adds to the creature comforts as we have cold drink, lunches etc on tap. Music from the ipod set on shuffle makes for pleasant ambiance and a surprise or two when some songs come on - I don't think that I have actually listened to the full CDs loaded on before the ... read more
