Tonight we are at Albany WA. We haven't looked around too much as we only arrived late this afternoon. The caravan park we are staying in is quite nice but quite expensive. Oh well we have stayed in alot of free camping spots, its nice to splash out now and then :). It has been raining off and on for most of the afternoon and then some hail tonight. A lady at the information centre told us Perth has been hammered by high winds and we are expected to get them sometime during the night ........ she said they were 125k an hour!! After finishing the Nullabor we drove on to Esperance. I loved it. The town was built on a bay which is surrounded by Islands (Called the Bay of Islands). The bay was quite ... read more

After leaving Esperance, we had a longish drive, stopping overnight at Jerramungup - one of the many towns ending in 'up' in this area - in the aboriginal Noongar language, ‘up’ means ‘place of’. Then it was a similar drive the next day though cattle country, sheep country, and wheat fields as far as the eye could see. As we got closer to Albany, the country changed to tree plantations - mostly eucalypts but a few pine trees. It's nine years since we were in Albany and it seems to have grown no end. It is a pretty and neat town, dominated by smooth rocky hills, white sand and many bays and islands. A very large silo - or silos - dominate the main waterfront and beyond that is a woodchipping mill and wharf - obviously ... read more

Friday 1st May ~ can’t believe it’s May already, where have the last 3 months gone? Anyway had a lovely leisurely hot shower (the first for 3 days!!) then sent last blog before setting off to see T he Natural Bridge and The Gap, both just outside Albany. More superlatives!! The Natural Bridge is a huge bridge of granite some 60 or 70metres long, 30 metres wide and about 30 metres above the waves of the Southern Ocean. Those waves come thundering in below the bridge and shatter themselves on the rocks. Similarly The Gap is a cleft that’s been cut into the granite cliffs by wave action and as the waves hit the cliff face its just a maelstrom of rushing white water and deafening noise ~ photos never quite capture the awesome power, the ... read more

Saturday 25th April - Stayed at Frank Lipino Memorial rest area last night and on road early this morning. Heading towards Bunbury - did a U turn and took scenic route to Serpentine Dam - wonderful spot - nobody there except for us and lots of tame green parakeets. Bit further on came to a welcome café and viewing point. Very peaceful apart from lovely jazz music from café, Nat King Cole, Dave Brubeck etc. Took coastal route to Bunbury still very quiet bearing in mind that its Anzac Day (public holiday on Monday). Travelled through very dry stock country (still not a blade of grass to be seen). Arrived at Bunbury - long white beaches, some with basalt rocks. Also very busy port and harbour with strong Aboriginal links. Went and found our camping area ... read more

Awesome day even though I came down with a raging head cold. Where meant to go out to Bluff Knoll in the Stirling Ranges to do some trekking but I softed out. So instead had a looky around the historic main street, and picniced in a park for lunch. Headed out along Frenchman Bay Rd to Frenchman Bay to have a look at Whale World, the old Albany Whaling Station which closed down in 1978. They used to hunt Sperm and Right Whales. Pretty gruesom practice, but heaps interesting. Then on the way home called into the Blowhole (remember - don't stand over it!). Pretty cool and noisy. Watched a couple of lads with a death wish out surfing off some rocks. Onto the gap and Natural bridge, where the ocean comes crashing into the sheer ... read more

Hello Everyone Well Sandy and I were off to a good start. We had a great dinner on Friday night at The Saint, our neck of the woods. With a good feed in our tummy's there wasn't a chance for a overly huge night. We gave it a good bash though! The party was great, the company and the stories were a plenty. It was a great send off and Sandy and I rolled home bout 12.30 pm for a good nights sleep. After last minute packing and running the last of the storage to dads shed and after downing a few cuppa's we left the hood and headed to Kings Park to wish little Taj a happy 1st birthday. Staying for only a snippet and a teary farewell we headed off round 3pm to Albany. ... read more

Tuesday 17th March - Thursday 19th March From Bremer we travelled through the farming areas of Borden, Gnowangerup and Tambellup before reaching our destination, Cranbrook. Here, we had arranged to spend Wednesday working with the teachers and students using ICT. The principal, Brian Appleby, had been at Teachers College with Rags all those years ago, as well as teaching his daughter, Julie, in Year 7. Both of them had changed since then but it was fun to reminisce. He now lives on a property near here, has remarried and has a 3 year old girl. Still hyperactive and looking good for a 58 y.o. The shire caravan park was our home, this being a quiet, shady spot with spotlessly clean facilities. We obviously impressed them with the work we did with them on Tuesday afternoon and ... read more

Thursday, 12th March 2009 After arriving in Albany we stopped at the tourist bureau where we were given a list of caravan parks. We decided to try the Kalgan River Caravan Park just out of town because it was on a river and looked peaceful. We were right! It was lovely and we were given a river bank site which would have been perfect for a longer stay. We wandered through the Albany shops before going to Rags ex brother and sister in law, Jeff and Fran who have recently retired to Albany as 2 of their 3 children live here. Fran had just driven back from a trip to Perth and was very tired so we didn’t stay long. We sat on their balcony that overlooked Oyster Bay - gorgeous. Jeff also showed us the ... read more

Bremer Bay (170 km east of Albany) introduced a whole new challenge to The Kornies 5: setting up in the pouring rain! We were all saturated and the kids, when not assisting in set up, were busy drinking the flowing fresh water coming off the awning. The surrounds were a lush, green forest, close to more beautiful beaches. We treated ourselves to “Misty’s” Pizza and devoured the generous serves. It definitely lived up to its reputation. The following morning was my birthday celebrations: pancakes, a cake from the local market and potato chips. Yes Jojo was the caterer! I loved my presis from Esperance local markets: a bracelet from Max, a beanie from Sam and earrings from Jojo. The rain subsided and we ventured out to see a wind turbine. We discovered a gorgeous little museum ... read more
