Escaping form Perth for a few days I drive along the coast from Walpole to Albany. Attractions during this trip are the Valley of Giants, inlet beaches and the former whaling city of Albany. Walpole, 450 kms south-west of Perth is located on Walpole Inlet which drains into the larger Nornalup Inlet and hence into the Southern Ocean. Established in the 1930's as a group settlement for farmers its industries grew to include timber milling, beef and dairy farming. Today its main claim to fame is the Red and Yellow Tingle Tree. With a population of 500 people it is a very quiet center with shops closed by 8PM. The Red Tingle (Eucalpytus Jacksonii) is found only in the vicinity of the Walpole-Nornalup National Park. It can grow up to 75 metres high. Its shallow root ... read more

I think I've become a pilgrim junky?!? Well OK the Bibbulmun isn't really anything like its Spanish brethren - no religious relics, bugger all churches, no menu del dia, no lisping Spanards & barely a German or Frenchman in sight. However, it does resemble the metaphorical journey one takes. A little like eating too much fibre - a little painful at times, but it makes you feel all cleansed & virtuous at the end of it. Walking 1000km can have that effect on you - that's why Lusty & I have chosen the 'soft' option & are probably only going to complete about 100km - if we're lucky! The purist Bibbulmunist, would start somewhere just north east of Perth. Pack loaded with camping & cooking gear & steadying themselves for a journey that will take about ... read more

Up for 7 for the breakfast then onto the bus and on the road for 7:45am. We drove for 15 mins then stopped at the bicentennial tree, This tree has the highest fire look-out post in the world. A few people climbed it using the metal spikes that had been put into the tree, most of us did not bother climbing it as it did not look that safe. We then left and drove to Walpole where the tree-top walk is. We walked along the platforms that had been built above the trees, We then drove to a winery and had lunch. Following this we went through Denmark towards Albany. Before we reached Albany we stopped at the natural bridge and the Gap. the hostel cooked a pasta dish which was ok... read more

Merry Christmas!! Unsurprisingly, Christmas Day felt like no other I’ve experienced. The plan was to have all food ready by 12pm, which was a bit of a mission considering that we had only one oven and one stove. But we pulled it off and there was quite a spread. Garry had done a bit chunk of lamb with roast potatoes and carrots; Mamako did a variety of sushi rolls; there was some mashed potato; Tom did his prawn cocktail; Anders provided us with a plentiful supply of Swedish meatballs and gravy as well as some beetroot salad; we had Indonesian kebabs; Elizabeth did a big vegetable pie; Slim carved up his ham and made a big tray of cauliflower cheese; there was a selection of salads and lots of bread and wine and beer and everything! ... read more

I've done a little more this week than last week. On Thursday we went down to Albany to stay for two nights with Ian and Jean and to explore the South, everything is so far apart that it took a couple of hours even from there to get to the places that were 'close by'. The drive down wasnt the most scenic and mostly involved trees and more trees and yep you guessed it more trees . Nat did spot our first wild Kangaroo and we spotted alot more hopping in fields by the time we got back. On the Friday we went to The valley of the giants and took the 'Tree Top Walk' the highest point being 40metres and the walkway had a slightly uneasy sway about it when too many people got on ... read more

Continuing on from Perth we decided to do a tour of the South West. We left Perth bright and early at 6.30am - needless to say as i am an unemployed bum i struggled with this! After managing to get myself up, dressed and checked out i ventured in to the back yard of the hostel for a little ciggie, blistfully unaware that there was 18 people sitting on a coach at the front of the hostel waiting for me! Even the other side of the world and i have earned myself a reputation for being late! Our tour guide Scottie was a good sport about my tardiness and for the remainder of the trip he monitored my location and prompted me on the time! After departing Perth we travelled South West on the longest , ... read more

20/10/06 - 22/10/06 We flew around the South West corner of Oz in a 3 day tour; Perth - Albany - Denmark - Pemberton - Margaret River - Busselton - Perth. Traveling from Perth our first stop was at Fox River Winery - Hurrah!! We slurped (literally) the Pinot Noir, Shiraz and Chenin Blanc, sucking in the oaky flavours. After a lot of swallowing and not much spitting we followed the highway through the Porongurups and climbed Castle Rock. The hike was well worth the effort for the rewarding views, after clambering across boulders and up a steep metal ladder to the crow’s nest viewpoint. Our Guide Rick gave amazingly detailed information on the local flora, learned from Aboriginal guides. Red/orange is a warning, beware! Anything with leaves coming off the stalk at 90 degrees and ... read more

5th - 8th September 06 - All the news and papers, here today, refer to 'Steve Irwin'. Its really strange that only the other day at the aquarium at Hillary's Harbour, I was watching the stingrays in fascination, as they swam safely around me, while I walk through the glass tunnel. I thought how cute they looked with their smiley face underneath. (like my drawings of a smiley face). :-) Thanks everyone for the great texts and emails on the subject!! The bus journey was 6 hours from Perth to Albany. The vast countryside was surprisingly flat moorland (ranges) with unusual shape trees and many sheep. Dairy farms and vineyards are plentiful. There are many crators, in the fields, which are apparently dams, dug out for the water to collect to feed the animals. Lots of ... read more
