GOR Day 11. Queenscliff I love Queenscliff and what a lovely day to travel there from Geelong. We were a bit sad to leave the Gatehouse on Ryrie, despite its lack of en-suite facilities, due to its old world quaintness. The day started a bit dull and we had a headwind for much of the way making it hard riding on the long straight roads. There was a nice cycle route just before 13th Beach with the big rolling waves off to our right. The Jirrahlinga Wildlife Sanctuary were having a Koala talk when we arrived which was very good and we saw a large male and several females munching away on gum tree leaves. There was a good variety of birds, including Kookaburras, tawny frogmouth owls, kestrels, lorikeets and parrots etc. Obviously we saw kangaroos, ... read more

The main thing today was to take the ferry to the Mornington Peninsula. I arrived at Queenscliff where the ferry leaves every hour on the hour to Sorrento. I arrived early thinking I would take the 2PM ferry which would give me some time to look around. I saw a little of Queenscliff, visited the lighthouse, and saw one or two of the local beaches. My main activity, however, was a walk from Springs Beach to the Point Lonsdale Lighthouse. There was a lovely combined walk/bike path along the coast from Queenscliff to Point Lonsdale. Once I approached the point, fortunately the tide was low which allowed me to scramble around the point and complete the walk along the beach. There were lots of unique volcanic rock formations and structures to keep me amused so all ... read more

Day in Geelong and journey to Queenscliff. We can recommend the Palace of the Orient on Yarra for a Chinese banquet. Great food and wine with good service. Today we had typical Australian Victorian weather. Not too hot but warm with some sun in the morning and a little drizzle after lunch at the Old Customs House. We were due to have a helicopter flight around the town but low cloud and the drizzle put paid to that - shame. The helicopter was unavailable in the morning since it was doing a funeral? How do you do that? Tip them out of the door over the sea? Early evening at Paul’s house with the little boys then a meal in town at Parkers Steak House. Saturday morning turned out dull and coolish as we left for ... read more

Today decided to visit the Ballarine Peninsula as I had one day left of the car hire before I left for Adelaide. The drive took about an hour and twenty minutes. Visited both Queenscliff and Portarlington, both very nice little sleepy seaside towns. I had thought about going on the ferry to Mornington Peninsula but by the time I got there it didn't leave enough time as the ferry only goes once an hour and takes about forty minutes and I didn't really have time for that so visited Portarlington instead. The weather was warm and sunny, bliss. Nice way to spend a lazy Sunday.... read more

The cold snap that hit Victoria seems to have been replaced with a dry warm air flow making todays journey more summer like. We left Wonthaggi early and drove to Sorrento through rolling country. Marg shot some landscape from the MH while I drove, and the country is very very dry. Once again we saw that a lot of hay has been cut and stored for winter feed, but the pasture just has not recovered. Not far out of Wonthaggi is a sky diving club/airport. However, firstly read the sign - noy sure about this. Then, it seams a local trawler mistook the runway lights for navigation beacons and parked his boat on the airport. I have talked about my mate Tom Tom the Navigator. He nearly was buried at sea today after he led us ... read more

We decided to take the Ferry from Queenscliff, across Port Philip Bay to Sorento today. There must have been hundreds of other motorcyclists all heading across on the ferry to go to Phillip Island, and we really confused the personel on the boat, by having our bike jackets and helmuts and no bike. Heidi decided to stay at the wharf, as she thought she might get sea sick on the crossing. It took a smooth 45 minutes to cross to Sorento. The ride back was interesting, because we spotted a gazebo in the middle of the channel (see facebook photo) WTF. Couldn't see any smoke from the bbq or smell any meat so we were at a loss. We took the long/scenic way back to camp, via, St. Leonards and Portarlington on roads that were good ... read more

I stayed in Sorrento for 3 nights, still chilly but very pretty area and good company so it was alright! I got there by taking a ferry, then a train and finally a bus! The town I caught the bus in was very....interesting. I felt like I had gone straight to a sunnier version of Newark. As I waited for the bus I watched a man who'd managed to keep about 3 of his teeth get arrested for carrying around a rifle in a stroller. Him and his wife put on quite the show for everyone in town but thank God my bus came soon so I didn't have to witness anymore special events! The hostel itself is a small beach house and when I got there no one was at reception and only one guest ... read more
