First stop on the trip - Sydney!

So I'm back in Franklin Lakes here with my last entry and summary of my 2 weeks travelling with the parents! It feels very strange to be back here, almost feels as though the past 3 months never happened which is sad because I never want to forget a moment of my trip. Anyways, here's what I've been up to for the past 2 weeks... The day my parents arrived I tried to keep them busy so they could overcome jetlag as much as possible! After meeting them at their hotel we headed towards the Sydney Harbour to see my favorite Opera House and have a bite to eat. After lunch we got on a bus to Bondi Beach. The weather was sunny but windy so the beach was a little cold to lay on but ... read more

I stayed in Sorrento for 3 nights, still chilly but very pretty area and good company so it was alright! I got there by taking a ferry, then a train and finally a bus! The town I caught the bus in was very....interesting. I felt like I had gone straight to a sunnier version of Newark. As I waited for the bus I watched a man who'd managed to keep about 3 of his teeth get arrested for carrying around a rifle in a stroller. Him and his wife put on quite the show for everyone in town but thank God my bus came soon so I didn't have to witness anymore special events! The hostel itself is a small beach house and when I got there no one was at reception and only one guest ... read more

3/23/10 I finished my final week of work last Friday, crazy how a month flew by! I didn’t go out on St Paddy’s Day because my neck was still bothering me from a migraine the day before so I thought I’d take the night to go to bed early. After much thought I finally decided that tickets to Perth on the West Coast were too expensive so I found really cheap tickets to Melbourne and decided to roam around there for the following couple weeks. The following night after work I met up with some of the people I met at the last BBQ and we went to a place called Homebar on Darling Harbour. It was “Uni Night” (college night) so most of the people there were at least 5 years younger than me but ... read more

3/17/10 Today me and my roommate Elise went to get Brunch at Max Brenner’s which I never went to in the states and now will make a point to go all the time when I return! We had waffles with ice cream, bananas and strawberries with his famous melted chocolate on top. I didn’t believe chocolate could taste so good. It was like eating from the chocolate river in Willy Wonka…soooo good. Then we made a trip to Priceline for some bath and body essentials…priceline is like CVS times a hundred but it only has make-up, hair stuff, body wash, razors, and some medicine. It’s the only place to get the cheap make-up and things I get at pharmacies at home. Here a pharmacy or “chemist” is really strictly a place to get health related things ... read more

They were all so nice and very funny, I'd go to the bathroom and hear them all speaking German but as soon as I came out they'd start speaking English again because they didn't want to offend me! One of them was 23 and living with a host family in Brisbane but ... read more

2/26/10 I just finished my first week of work at Tiffany & Co. in Sydney. I thought I’d be doing the same thing as in the states but turns out there’s not much to do. The US call center is the only place that can Australia orders over the phone, we don’t have access to any records for returns, repairs, orders, etc and none of the stores ever answer their phones. So basically all I do, along with one other girl, is tell customers if a store has something in stock, transfer calls to what is usually an answering machine at a store or when the customer gets really pissed keep calling different extensions till someone finally picks up. Oh and none of the stores have direct lines, they all go to us…imagine trying to explain ... read more

2/24/10 Our “bus” arrived to take us from Byron Bay to Brisbane but it was more of a van than the bus we had imagined the “Brisbane 2 Hour Shuttle” to be. Regardless, it was $25, went straight there and had air conditioning…all the essentials. Before getting on the bus I happened to notice a ridiculous event. At the bus station suddenly a big rig truck pulled up in the bus zone…I thought clearly he was confused, drunk or both. So the guy gets out, comes around to the other side, opens the door and proceeds to help out 2 young girls along with their luggage…these girls thought it was hilarious and were taking pictures in the truck, with the trucker, outside the truck, waving to the truck…now there are a few reasons that made me ... read more

2/20/10 So on our way out the door to go sea kayaking we got a call saying it was too choppy and we should reschedule. SO we planned for the next day and then looked at eachother wondering what to do at 8am, go back to sleep or try to be productive. Well laying on the beach covered all bases so that’s where I went! Later that night we went back to the Rails our favorite live music venue where I finally found a piano! It was in the back bar area so when the guy performing in the other room would take a break I would play and sing softly. It was great since I hadn’t seen a piano in sooooo long. The next morning we woke up AGAIN to go sea kayaking. Perfect conditions ... read more

2/14/10 Happy Valentine’s Day! Although all you guys back in the states won’t be celebrating for another day but it’s Valentine’s Day here! I’ve been busy soaking up the summer sun so again I apologize for my blogging absence! Here is a summary of the last week or so! Coffs Harbour was fantastic! The hostel was a million times better than the one we had just come from and the area was gorgeous as well. I kept forgetting to take my camera to the beach but there was a historic Jetty that was so long that when you walked to the end you literally felt like you were in the middle of the ocean! We also walked (well it felt like hiking) up Muttonbird Island which is this small island with nothing but a steep path ... read more
