Day in Geelong and journey to Queenscliff.
We can recommend the Palace of the Orient on Yarra for a Chinese banquet. Great food and wine with good service. Today we had typical Australian Victorian weather. Not too hot but warm with some sun in the morning and a little drizzle after lunch at the Old Customs House. We were due to have a helicopter flight around the town but low cloud and the drizzle put paid to that - shame. The helicopter was unavailable in the morning since it was doing a funeral? How do you do that? Tip them out of the door over the sea? Early evening at Paul’s house with the little boys then a meal in town at Parkers Steak House. Saturday morning turned out dull and coolish as we left for Quennscliff and eventually got onto Horseshoebend Road. Unfortunately 5 riders decided to go in the lead without looking at their Garmin or notes and ended up on Torquay. We waited at the junction of BlackGate Road until they returned since we could not catch them and we were on the only road to Barwon Heads. After the pleasant cycle path from Breamlea Rd to 13
mile Beach we ended at the Jirrahlinga Wildlife Sanctuary to see koalas, wombats, kangaroos, wallabies, pademelons, dingos, snakes and loads of birds etc. Lunch at the Bakery in town, where I think I left my CBC long sleeved top over a chair. Fool. I will ring and see if it is still there and collect next week. Great run over to Ocean Grove on the cycleways
and the old railway line path. Where we saw Pelicans, white faced heron, black swans and many wading birds. Behind the landing was an old railway station and rolling stock with an old steamer and diesel loco plus a steamer coupled up to several carriages. Later we saw this being kitted out for a Blues Night on the train with a meal included. Starting at 7.45pm and going up the line to Drysdale while a band was playing, back at 11.15pm.
Tonight we went to the local Chippy and had fish and chips in a paper bag. This was a nice change from more exquisite cuisine of previous nights. No wifi in our 100 plus year old hotel so this blog will have to wait again. Found my top in my hi-viz pannier cover.
You can't get the staff can you?
Sunday and 24 degrees and blue ski - heaven. All the locals are saying they have loved this summer since it has been cooler than previous years. We are loving it too and not looking forward to returning to winter. The breakfast was really good and served quickly. Chillie dog and the works bacon, mushrooms, poached egg toast etc. plus cereals. We decided to spend time in Queenscliff and take the 11am ferry so went to the barracks and then the marina for a coffee and cake. The trip across the rip to Sorrento was a pleasure on the top deck in the sun. We got some packed lunch in town and then cycled along the Nepean Highway to the point. This is where disaster struck and Sugan took a bad tumble off her bike and was found laid in the road. She was very shaken and suffered road rash on her shoulder, elbow, knee and knuckle. The worst was the concussion she suffered and had no idea where she was a remembered nothing. We cleaned and bathed her wounds and then two Park Wardens arrived and did some more cleaning. A passer
by had phoned for an ambulance which arrived 15 minutes later and took her to the hospital for a CTC scan at Rosebud just a few kilometres up the road. Kindly the wardens took her and Joe’s bikes and bags to our hotel for us. Three hours later and she was feeling much better and could remember the fall much to our relief. Now awaiting her return to the hotel, drinking beer in the sun on the green lawn outside our cabin. Big relief.
