This track takes you through the Australian outback, passing through a few remote little villages/towns/suburbs whatever you want to call them... We stopped in one called Lyndhurst to say hello to this old man called Talc Alf. He uses this certain stone which when you rub it creates talcom powder to show everyone his philosophies and theories on a big black board. He's lived in this house in the middle of nowhere for 17 years and has come up with a theory that everything revolves around writing and certain words. He also had all these australian flags with the union jack part replaced by the aboriginal flag which I do actually agree with... It was so funny though when he would cough or sneeze as it would create this big cloud of talc...ahaha... Along the track ... read more

to follow up the leaving of Sydney, we visited the opera house and did a tour. the rooms are amazing, especially the orchestra room, you see 100 organ pipes, and there actually like 10,000... Later date, we went to the Ice Bar-Below 5C...just like home...tear... everything was made of ice, including the glasses we drank from. You could only stay in for 1/2 hour, but it was enough. The ice was actually imported from Canadia... Had my Birthday, tried to work a double, they wouldn't let me. Sat and had one.........after another....lol Heather had a minor Operation which she is ok. It kept us in Sydney and extra week, and gave us time to say our goodbye to co-workers and Joanne once again. Joanne bought a house. A lovely one in Balmain, and anyone who ... read more

Oceania » Australia » South Australia » Mt Gambier April 18th 2006

Introduction We took a day trip to Mount Gambier on Tuesday. Mount Gambier is a major regional centre, located roughly half way between Melbourne and Adelaide. It has a population of about 25,000. The major draw card for us was that this region had active volcanos about 4-5000 years ago with major activity about 20-30,000 years before that. The result was a gently undulating country side with rich dark soil (used for growing potatoes and harvestable forest), volcanic craters, caves and sink holes. The centre piece of Mount Gambier are volcanic craters that have filled with water from the aquifer. The largest is the Blue lake, that forms the town’s water supply. In summer it appears a stunning blue colour - apparently as the semi-dissolved calcium carbonate in the lake that came from the limestone layer, ... read more

The first part of my expedition was getting to know the other 10 people in the group who I would be spending the next 240 hours with...whilst making our way north from Adelaide, heading for the Flinders Ranges. We camped just outside the entrance to the national park sign (literally) so we could have a campfire, as inside national parks it is banned until 30th of April. It was so nice to sleep in a swag outside, under the stars which are so incredibly bright being in the middle of no where. I couldn't beleive how stunning the sky was and different down here in the southern hemisphere. I didn't like getting up in the morning though with it being freezing cold, and having to go to the toilet behind a tree...brrrr it was so cold ... read more

Easter saw the SA Hiker family heading down to the South East of South Australia to a region known as the Limestone Coast. We spent two nights in Naracoorte and three in Robe. Thirty-five million years ago this region was at the bottom of the Southern Ocean. There are large flat areas in the landscape, and then ranges, which are the sand hills of old. Limestone deposits abound. If you look closely at the Limestone rock you can see fossils of sea creatures, shells and coral. The people of the South East are industrious - as their promotional material states - and limestone has been cut out and used as bricks for was housing. Our first place to visit was Lucindale, a small farming community, to attend the wedding celebrations of Sheldon and Stacey at Judy’s ... read more

Went to 'Adelaide's Biggest Easter Egg Hunt' with my Adelaide family at the weekend. It turned out to be such a bright sunny day, which was great as we had brought chairs, blankets and an esky full of yummy food :) I was unfortunately too old to enter the egg hunt...I've never actually been on an easter egg hunt before come to think of it... We all went into the city afterwards to get some tea. Steve and I bought a pie floater each. They are THE best! A gorgeous meat pie swamped in pea soup...ahhh it was so good! You can only get them in South Australia as well and from this special pie cart in the city. They are even mentioned in all the TNT and British Balls (free backpacker magazines) issues... I decided to leave Anne and Steve's for a short while and go to Kangaroo Island on a two day camping tour. It was a very early 6:20am start when a small group of us left the city heading down the Fleurieu Peninsula to Cape Jervis, where we then boarded a ferry to take us to Kangaroo Island. The journey was very rocky, with one lady falling into everyone ahaha... On our arrival the weather just kept getting better and better which was wonderful as back in Adelaide it had been quite dreary. We drove to Seal Bay where you can walk down onto the beach with a guide to where all the Australian Sea Lions are. These ones spend three solid days in the sea hunting for food, then 3 solid days sleeping and resting ... read more

After 4 years finally get to meet namesake Michael Treloar, only to find out he was in Helston on his first visit to Cornwall last July - not a hundred yards from where we live. We could have passed on the street and not known it! Have been to Mooloolaba and met his Uncle Les (Leslie Treloar!) and Aunty Peggy, hope to meet his Dad Harry shortly. ... read more

Adelaide City, oh so pretty...it's like a country town, nothing like Melbourne or Sydney. Alot smaller and prettier :) I'm staying with friends up in the hills. Their house is beautiful surrounded by 10 acres of land...with sheep, dogs, cats, chickens...and 2 wonderful children who I've been playing 'heads down thumbs up' with :) The couple who I'm staying with have also put me on the insurance of their car, so I've had the freedom to drive and explore adelaide. They're so kind to do that for me... The first day with the car I was quite nervous, as I hadn't driven in ages and had only really just passed my test...and the car is an automatic which I'm not used to either! Anyway, it was raining for the first day so I drove lots of ... read more

Day 1 - April 02 (567 km) We left home about 7am with a few tears and drove to Ararat for morning tea. We then drove to Bordertown for lunch. Arrived at Keith at 4 pm which wasn’t too bad going considering it was the kids first big drive. The activity books that you gave, Wendy have come in handy. Everytime I turned around Duane was doing it. Kiera has been watching some DVD’s and playing with her dolls. We lost a wheel cap on the caravan on the way to Keith so the van looks funny. To Wes and Amanda you will have to buy a bigger van as ours looks like a pimple compared to others. Gra decided to park next to a big fifth wheeler this night. Were we embarrassed!!! Duane was amazed ... read more
