Well this will make you all feel a better back in chilly UK.......we have for the past 2 days been holed up in a small village Warartah stuck up on a plateau and its been absolutely chucking it down all day and night, blowing a gale and a cool 10oC, overnight temps been as low as 3.5oC! But the bonus is they have a large pond/lake where they have resident duckbill platypuses so have been out watching them at dusk with the torch. The truck has held up pretty well, no leaks so far. Tasmania is a chilly place and quite separate from Australia in all sorts of ways! So have been spending the time updating the 'blog' which was well out of date - so apologies for you getting lots of updates in the past ... read more

Introduction This week it was my turn to choose the location - and I chose a bushwalk at Anstey Hill Recreation Park. We used George Driscoll's walk number 13 as a guide (page 32) as although we have visited Anstey Hill before, we had not been on these particular tracks. The park is located at the end of Grand Junction Road between North East Road and Lower North East Road. For this walk you need to go to the eastern side of the park - take LNE road and turn a sharp right on to Range Road South and pull up at gate 18. The walk is suitable for young and old. The paths are wide and clear (which is a relief after losing the trail last week) - but there are some steep sections that ... read more

The trip officially started this morning when I put on the first pair of the 5 underpants I have packed for the next 3 months, ah the joys of backpacking. Fortunately we had most of our emotional goodbyes over the last few days (I´m going to miss pale ale, huuumph, I promised myself I wouldnt cry) and today was more fun, courteous to Suse and Judes who took us to Adelaide´s shiny new airport to catch our flight to Melbourne. Let the Journey Begin... in Melbourne for a night with Sam and conveniently a night of Commonwealth Games Festivities. ... read more

22 Mar - Adelaide for the last time this trip We were welcomed by our gracious Adelaide host family (Frank, Francis & Liam) once again. Today Leanne went to pick up the car from the repair depot and I took the day to scoot back to Sydney very briefly to carefully consider some important work and career affecting decisions in a brief meeting with my department manager. (News of future developments will be forthcoming as events unfold). Back in Adelaide, it was appropriate for us to cook the Andrews family dinner after they fostered two transient travellers and stored the entire contents of our car in their back room for two weeks. Frank and Francis, we cannot thank you guys enough! Thursday 23-Mar, we re-packed the car with all of our gear and headed for the ... read more

Our change of direction in life started on the 22nd March when we said our goodbye's to family and friends and headed north to stay with Rachel & Randal Edson at Pt. Augusta. From their we headed west and with marvelous weather we headed for Nundroo to stay on a huge property called Paxton Ag. The owners, Dianne & Brian Smith, are friends of Jen's (and now mine) from way back from the good old Laura days. They are a delightfull couple and after choking down a couple of beers and some wine along with a great meal, we headed for the caravan to enjoy some well earned sleep. The following morning we again headed further west and stayed at Baladonia and ejoyed a meal at the pub. A huge road gang was in town and ... read more

After a lot of indecision I have finally chosen the destination of my next adventure. I chose this region of the world for a number of reasons the first being the shining review it got from Arthur a Melbourne lad I met in Cappadocia (Turkey) a few years ago. The second because war is a disaster when it comes to preserving a nations historical sites (Afghanistan, Kuwait and Iraq showed the world this) and this region is likely to become even more of a hotspot in the months to come, so I wanted to get in before the American or Israeli bombs. In seven weeks I plan to experience the best the Persian Gulf has to offer visiting UAE, Oman, Yemen, Kuwait, Bahrain, Qatar and ofcourse Iran. Saudi is out as it is the most difficult ... read more

Spruiked yesterday, Sunday, to good effect in Rundle St. This morning did Radio Adelaide interview. Went in to studio to get face to face with interviewer. Much better than mobile phone. Adelaide's been great. Nice city. Lots of parks. Streets change names a lot though. And here a Perth midi of beer is called a schooner and an Adelaide pint is a Sydney schooner. Got it? It's also taken me ten days to get my bearings since Adelaide is situated on a north/south axis and Perth is east/west. Thanks Adelaide for your support. I head for Melbourne.... read more

What a weekend!! Just got back from a 4wd tour of the Flinders Ranges. Amazing place and the tour was brilliant - saw so much. It all started on Friday night when i caught the bus from Adelaide up to Port Augusta (The Crossroads of Australia apparently - all the outback towns use it for supplies and such). There i was told to look out for a white 4WD and a black cowboy hat, and sure enough there he was, Paul Keen my tour guide. Absolute typical Aussie bush man!! Didn't get into Port Augusta till pretty late so me and my two companions on the tour, a Dutch woman called Hellete and her son Peter, headed straight for the hostel. The Andu Lodge - not bad as far as hostels go. Next day we had ... read more

Introduction Today's walk was a stunning one and a memorable one - the Yulti Conservation Park. This walk was chosen by Peter and was planned to be three and half an hour walk along the Heysen Trail near Myponga (found in George Driscoll’s book). The Heysen trail itself is beautiful and I would recommend people visit this park if they are in the area allowing about two hours to traverse the park and return. The views are spectacular: to the west you will see the Myponga reservoir and the ocean, and on a clear day, Kangaroo Island. You will need proper walking shoes as the slopes are steep and slippery in parts. I would say children would need to be reasonably fit - about eight to ten years old would be okay. To get there - ... read more

Well, I finally crossed a state border... crossing the ACT/NSW one doesnt count when u LIVE on the border. And going to Victoria just doesnt count... well, I dont think so anyway! lol! So anyway, after sleeping in and having my brother in law drive back to his place to call me so that i'd wake up and get ready, we finally hit the canberra airport and i still had plenty of time. I managed to get myself towards the back of the plane... but as close to the front i could get (i love being near the front of the plane!) I went with Qantas on the really early morning fligth and it was great.. i watched a small documentaries on penguins and then a weird show on how this kid loved aussie rules (wat ... read more
