We got up early, packed up and headed toward our first planned destination, Pt Brown. (A beach camp 20km from Smoky Bay). Kate, AC, Lori and Riley along with Brett, Anna, Brooke and Amber awaited our arrival after setting up and securing our favourite camp spot. Yippee!! We are on holiday at last and looking forward to spending some time with great friends at the awesome spot. The end of the day saw us all gather together with a drink in hand to watch the beautiful sunset over the point, and so our evening ritual began. On day 1 together all four families loaded into our cars and headed for Smoky Bay, a small town with a beautiful calm beach. We launched the tinnie for the keen fishermen along with two kayaks to attempt to catch ... read more

Thursday morning we left camp armed with our trusty local tourist map and an overwhelming desire to ride several of the "loop" roads indicated on said map. Boy, were we wrong. Our first stop was a hill with huge granite boulders that had been carved and weathered over millions of years. These boulders are spread over quite a few hectares and although the hill is only small, it offers a commanding view over the very flat landscape. Granite, as you know is really incredibly hard and considering the erosions is caused by wind carrying dusty sand and small particles it is amazing to see the end result. We will put a couple of photos on Facebook. We then resumed our loop road adventure and turning from the road out of the haystacks to continue, the road ... read more

Both of us were ready for our next chapter when we left Elliston. A short distance down the road, we stopped at Colton, not really a town, but, just a house. This house had a wood fired oven and the owners baked daily. The bread they bake, they then bag and put it in to a cupboard with a glass sliding door, situated under a little shack, just off the highway. The idea is, you stop and chose accordingly, everything is $4, then you place the money in the pink honesty box. The scene was complete with a red cattle dog keeping an eye on things. It was the type of place you usually just drive by, but we were given a heads up, thank goodness. The rest of the trip was great roads, nice scenery, ... read more

Oh Lord, Won’t you buy me a Mercedes Benz? My friends all drive Porches. I must make amends. December 8 our Mercedes land yacht is anchored in the caravan park at Peaceful Bay on the Southern Ocean. The sound of surf breaking can be heard coming from a beach where the white sand has been pushed by wind and tide from the restless Southern Ocean into burms along its edge producing a garden of succulent green saw grass contrasting the brilliant blue sea with the white of breaking waves and the tan of exposed iron stained Canadian shield granite poking through the sand. This view is a few short steps from our campsite. We have an awning out the side under which we have attached a windowed fly bag. Theoretically the flies can’t get in and ... read more

Streaky Bay was one of those places full of unusual events that had you wondering what could possibly happen next. Upon arrival there was no power in the caravan park. ETSA was installing an underground cable so the power was to be off until 3pm. It was after 5 when it finally returned. As we drove slowly around the park to find our site a van, without any car, suddenly started rolling across the road in front of us, finally gently crashing into the caravan opposite. People ran from everywhere to help. A lady in the stationary van got quite a shock when her van got a sudden jolt. The collision knocked it off it’s stabilisers. The owners of the runaway van were on their first trip and this was their first caravan park. They unhitched ... read more

Day 17 of our adventures and we were up bright and early again, or so we thought! There must have been 20 caravans at the Nullarbor roadhouse that night and all were gone by the time we were showered and had the campsite down! We hadn’t far to go before we reached out first destination of the day anyways! The Head of Bight was only about 20 km’s from where we slept and that was where we went first. The Head of Bight is a head, much like any at home, except that here there were exquisite views and apart from that it is where well over one hundred whales came each year between May and October to give birth to their young and nurse them until they are old enough to fend for themselves. It ... read more

Hi All, It's been awhile since we last posted. Reception was pretty much null and void at Baird Bay and Fowlers Bay unless you were on top of the sand dunes. Baird Bay was great, camping was good, lovely view. Spent time out in the boat, went and visited a Sea Lion colony and got up close and personal. We fished regularly for snook, whiting and monster salmon. From Baird we went to Fowlers Bay with the hope of catching some big squid. We had been told it was the place but unfortunately the squid did not want to play, so we had to settle for whiting, flathead and garfish. We spent time 4wd around rugged coastline and deserted beaches and almost getting lost. We had and extremely hot day and true to form I just about melted away. ... read more

This Blog entry covers our stay in Streaky Bay from the 3rd Nov until leaving on the morning of the 8th. I had been looking forward to Streaky Bay for quite some time having heard many great stories about the town ....and we have not been let down !. Nestled on the coastline the picturesque town of Streaky Bay derived its name because of the streaks in the water across the bay caused by the reflection of light and seaweed. In 1839 Edward John Eyre made camp about 3 klms from Streaky bay where he found a permanent waterhole know as "Cooeyanna" and today this can still be seen and is now known as Eyre's Waterhole. Streaky Bay is the major service centre for the surrounding rural district. Sitting here typing watching the sun go down ... read more

After 3 days in Ceduna we have moved down south to Streaky Bay. Not far, about 100klm, so it was a quick trip today. A bit different from the long drives we have had across the Nullarbor etc. I forgot to tell you about 3 men (in their 70’s) that we met while playing golf across the Nullarbor. They were telling us that a couple of weeks ago they were having a drink at their local and after a couple of beers, someone decided that they should get in their car and drive across the Nullarbor, playing golf all the way. So they set off in a Station Wagon full of grog and are having a ball. As I have said before, it is the people you meet that really make our trip memorable. Also about ... read more

Adelaide to Streaky Bay Adelaide airport was our first stop for the day to drop off Denise for her return trip to Melbourne. It was fantastic having Denise make the effort to join us for the grad, and were very impressed by the quantity of sleep we achieved when sharing the camper – unlike previous family holidays in the boat due to excessive snoring from one or more family members! On our way through Port Augusta we stopped for lunch and fuel -50.69L @ 151.9c/L We continued on our travels and noticed some very pretty pink and blue salt lakes at Lachiel, then couldn’t miss the large Australian Farmers statue at Wudinna.
