Based on a hot tip from a friend of Cathy Gatt, this morning we drove inland looking for a big rock! We drove out Calca Road to the Flinders Highway. On the way we were being shadowed by a flock of galahs. So cool to be driving along at 70km/hr with the flock keeping pace. Unfortunately, by the time I got the camera sorted, the galahs had crossed to the other side of the car and then they swooped back over the car and away into the paddocks. We headed south east on the highway to Port Kenny where we stopped for a quick leg stretch. The blue water of Venus Bay looked tantalising from the highway so we drove down to the water front. When will we learn? The tide is ALWAYS out so all ... read more

A relatively quiet day today with only two sightseeing destinations on our list. Our first stop was the Point Labatt Conservation Park to view the only permanent colony on the Australian Mainland of Australian Sea Lions who share the area with some New Zealand Fur Seals. The easiest way to tell the difference is that the fur seals are a lighter, sandy colour and the sea lions are brown. There are other differentiating characteristics, like the ear flaps on the sea lions, but we were way too far away to be seeing ear flaps!! We had hoped to swim with the sea lions, but it was totally booked out while we're here. Hmmn, we keep thinking it is not school holidays so it must be low or at least shoulder season, but we have been told ... read more

This morning we set out along the Flinders Highway heading northwest. Our first stop was at Mount Dutton Bay … which had seemed like a good idea when we were leaving Port Vincent. Unfortunately, the weather started to deteriorate and it began to drizzle enroute. When we turned off onto (unsealed) Farm Beach Road we encountered a sign warning us to watch for the grader. Ahem, we didn’t see the grader, but we did have to drive over freshly graded dirt that had just been watered by the water tanker that we DID have to pass on our way out to the bay!! Yuck. Although we found ourselves closer to Mount Dutton, it was even less visible this morning than it was yesterday from Coffin Bay with a pall of cloud hanging over it. Oh well, ... read more

Day 45 (15/4/2019) Walked into town to take a look around the Ceduna shops, picking up a couple of bargains that we did not expect to find! Went to the Ceduna Foreshore Hotel for lunch. Had a 400g Rump Steak for $25, while Deb had a massive Stir Fry for $18. Stir Fry was brilliant while the Rump was as chewy as an old boot. Went fishing & caught fresh fish again, so fish is on the menu. The only problem is that mosquitoes inhabit the jetty & you not only get eaten alive but also picked up & carried away! Day 46 (16/4/2019) Went for a short drive to Denial Bay, which is north west opposite Ceduna across the bay. Lovely jetty walk talking to some wonderful people from all over Australia. Funny how people ... read more

Saturday 24 September (cont) Streaky Bay and surrounds The Streaky Bay Foreshore Tourist Park was very well set up with several camp kitchens, laundry, lounge and dining room. Both the lounge and dining rooms had TVs in them and this was important because the second Preliminary Finals for the AFL between Greater Western Sydney and the Bulldogs was on that night. We were hoping for a closer game that the previous night’s game between Geelong and Sydney were Sydney smashed the Cats. Once hooked up to power, we went for a walk down the beach. It was freezing due to the breeze. We learned that the morning was almost gale-force wind and very cold. But nothing was going to stop us from walking along the beach so we rugged up in our thick jackets. The weather ... read more

Lucky Bay in WA to Streaky Bay SA. This will be a relatively short blog as we have driven a lot of ks (1600 approx.) from Lucky Bay to Streaky Bay and to get us just a little short of half way from the west coast to the east coast of Australia. The major part of this stage of our journey is the famous Nullarbor Plains, Norseman to Ceduna, ( about 1200ks) which we covered in two days. Many folk talk of this road with its long straights and barren salt bush terrain as boring or a challenge. We find it neither of the above. There is always something to see and the landscape seems to be always changing. For most of the journey, Nullarbor is inappropriate as there are trees and salt bush covering large ... read more

Ceduna to Streaky Bay Aug.14 After a great break in Ceduna we were ready to head for Streaky to just relax and enjoy the beach and the walks there, but first we had to get there! Heading out of town we turned off the Eyre to follow the Flinders Hwy along the coast. Now, they say that Ceduna is the Oyster Capital of Australia, hmmm…anyway, most of the actual Oyster farming appears to be done at a small town 40klm east of Ceduna called Smoky Bay, our first stop for the day. We had been here before, but did not look around too closely, so we thought we had better do Smoky justice this trip. With a permanent population of about 200 it looks like it could quadruple during the summer months and holidays, as most ... read more

After three months of exploring the WA coast we are back in SA and back in the familiar territory of our favourite SA holiday destination, Streaky Bay. We set up on the calm waters edge of the spectacular bay, all ready to enjoy the last few days of our incredible odyssey. We make sure to take the time to visit our favourite Streaky destinations. On day one we head straight to Mocean Café for gourmet coffee and scones, then drive out to Granite's Beach for some rock climbing, the girls, and fishing, Matt and I. We weren't so lucky in the fishing stakes, but Matt sees a giant humpback whale completely breach out of the water! Day two, we load up our packs and head to the Island for our last swim (steamers are back!) and ... read more

After a stint fishing on the Streaky Bay jetty yesterday evening, we come home with five fish. It was pretty hard getting the hook out of the thick weed there, but the weed is the home of the squid. Our friends get two of those, they are weird creatures with their long tentacles, and they spray ink all over the jetty. We walked up to the jetty to fish, and we walk back, about 3 ks! By the time we have tea, falling into bed is all I can do. Today we drove down to Point Labatt to have a look at the sea lion colony, it’s a bumpy road but we finally get there to see the lions basking in the sunshine. There’s a viewing platform, and a long way down the cliff, but I ... read more

A visit to the Tahlia Caves yesterday, which is a few ks east of Venus Bay was well worth it. Then a walk around the headland at South Head today, was pretty spectacular. It's an easy walk it starts at the end of the main street of Venus Bay and takes about an hour. There was a big swell coming in from the ocean, and the dolphins were just lazily swimming past the heads when we got there. Went for a fish on the Venus Bay Jetty this arvo, but only caught a sand crab! But, just being out there in the sunshine and fresh air was great. On To Streaky Bay tomorrow.... read more
