Hello everyone! From Byron Bay we came to Surfer's Paradise (March 14), but we're actually staying in Mermaid Beach which are both part of the Gold Coast. We're really enjoying staying in a room of our own in a resort with our own bathroom, kitchen, balcony and tv. There are also several pools but we tend to stick to the adults-only pool. So far this week we've done some shopping at an outlet mall, a lot of hanging around in our room or by the pool, and some walking around Surfer's Paradise. On Wednesday we went to Wet'n'Wild Water World and did some watersliding which was pretty fun. Most of the slides had tubes which cut down on the scrapes you get from going over the joins in the waterslide, although there was one slide where ... read more

So I am currently in australia. I arrived on my birthday to torrential rain. Luckily i met some people as soon as i arrived and we went to explore cairns and bought plastic ponchos en route and braved the rain. We treated ourselves to cheap wine from a box and went out for the night in cairns. Halfway through the night i took as detour to the adventure playground and played on the slides. In all it was a very sophisticated birthday. I didn't do much in cairns as the rain was relentless. It was hard to get anywhere due to flooding and there were crocodile warnings on the streets as the floods had bought them out. Most days we were reduced to drinking pina colada in the rain. We spent most evenings drinking and enjoying ... read more

Sorry for the lack of updates, but I haven't really had time to post anything due to my travelling around. I'm currently at Nicola's in the Gold Coast area, and loving the heat and sun :) We went out last night to Waxy's Irish Pub and had several drinks. We were lucky enough to attract some Irish guys who felt obliged to buy us some drinks for the remainder of the night. We did go to two other spots, but Melba's was empty, and Sin City was charging $10 so we just went back to Waxy's. Waxy's had some great live music as well. A guy was just playing his guitar and had quite a range of songs that he knew. All in all it was a great night. I think we got in around 3:30am, ... read more

Today I spent most of my day working on a rollercoaster made out of popsicle sticks for one of Nick’s classes. I’ll post some pictures of it tomorrow when it is closer to completion. It has a loop, a camel’s back and a turn, better than Canada’s Wonderland! Nick and I just got back from one of his friend’s place where we had a few Australian beers and I had some more Asian cooking. One of the guys there brought some rare beef with noodles in savory broth over from the local noodle bar and shared with me, it was delicious. I really think that Asian cuisine is my favourite; the combination on flavours always tickles my palette in the most interesting ways. Tomorrow I am heading to the Gold Coast early in the morning because ... read more

The closer I get to age 26, the more I wish I could stay 25 forever. I have decided 25 is a good age to be. Luckily my friend Mariko has had to hit the latter end of her 20's before me so we headed to the Gold Coast to celebrate her entrance to the nearly 30 group. We rented a tiny car with a name I have never heard of and the five of us (Mariko, Ed, Gard, Sandra and I) squished in. It is only a 2 hour drive and we passed the time by playing "I spy" and "the ABC' game. We stayed at a hostel in Surfer's Paradise. It was NOT paradise. The hostel rooms were less than pleasing but the nice pool helped to make up for it. The Gold Coast ... read more

Oct 8 Well what a month! Kym and I have been finalising our trip preparation as departure day gets tantalisingly close. The month started with me finishing up at work, and Kym scaling out of her work obligations too, which left us to concentrate in packing our house down into what to take/what to store/what to sell. We were lucky to have Kym’s mum Barb stay with us for this last month and she was a great help with the garage sale, cleaning up the house and the occasional motivational prod! Thanks Barb! We held the garage sale over a weekend which had us all wondering why we spent all week cleaning and pricing and setting up just to get rid of a bunch of accumulated junk, but we managed to make $700 smackeroos for our ... read more

At times, it's not always felt like we were actually at home, but more like on holiday, but then on the other hand, it's been hard work for both Stef and I, organising everything, new house, getting into the day to day swing of things and such like. We're ready for a holiday and some sunshine. The aussie winter, has not been anywhere near as darn miserable as good old Dewsbury, but, there have been some cold days to make you wrap up warm. The houses lack insulation and it's always cold at night, we even had a touch of frost a couple of nights, brrrrr.... We've booked for the Gold Coast, which the kids wanted to visit for all the theme parks, wall to wall sunshine and the good beaches. About 2-3 days before we ... read more

but life aboard wasn't without it's unexpected challenges... four days out of samoa we had run out of water! the secondary tank (60 gallons worth) of which was filled with the hepatitis enriched well water of fanning island, had leaked out. an unfound leaking hose had bled our precious liquid gold into the bilge tank, which was then of course, pumped out overboard unbeknownst to us. that meant no drinking water, no showers, no reserves... but we had cases of soda, bottles of juice, and heaps of canned veggies and fruit. "water, water all around and not a drop to drink" i had to resort to a salt water rinse out of a bucket as my own equator heated stench was getting to ME. the poor crew. we also ran out of our propane cooking fuel ... read more

a summary -- there wasn't all that much to the actual sailing really. i mean it wasn't like you see on the tv during the america's cup race with guys on the rails and cranking on sails screaming at each other. we could go long hours without adjusting a thing. also, with the trade winds blowing rather consistently and our sailing direction suitable in using those prevailing winds, it made "sailing" the boat convenient. plus, with the modern technology of gps and george (our auto-pilate), we would simply plug in the coordinates and press 'go to'. it was all pretty elementary but then again it WAS a real nice boat. so i got lucky as well. and the aussies i traveled with... i couldn't have asked for a better mix... again, very fortunate. now then, life ... read more

made it to australia on the 7th of september at 0100. the southern hemisphere where the toilets run backwards, the summer is winter, and 'today' here is really tomorrow. not only do the toilets run backwards but the weather and water currents also run counter-clockwise. so, does the flushing of a toilet in brisbane cause a cyclone in malaysia? hmmm. anyways, i am making my way south along the coast for now digging the coastal society of australia. i spent the first week on the boat in the harbor of manly and helped clean her up and pack her away. my last day on the boat and the last song played on it's radio... 'i come from the land downunder'... no shit. god's honest truth... if that's not life agreeing with me, i don't know what ... read more
