Hi all Weather here still beautiful blue skies (I have to put that in, I here it's still bad in NZ). We did the tourist thing yesterday, went for a 2 hour cruise around the waterways of Surfers Paradise, then to the Cararra Markets (Chris can get $1 books to read), and later drove up to Scantuary Cove . I will down load some more photos. Good to hear back from those who have sent comments. Cheers Lynne... read more

So we have been in the ever so famous Gold Coast for the last few days, and it was nice to be somewhere that was a bit touristy. We went to Surfers Paradise, and it was full of young trendy types - so we fitted right in! It was a weird mix of people, and shops - on one street it went, Subway, kebab shop, Prada, Gucci ! But it was nice just to wander about. We also saw the Versace Hotel where everyone stays on 'I'm a Celeb', and I tried to play the same theory of 'but its a once in life time experience' (well it worked for steve with the helicopter) but unfortunetely that didn't work, so back to the campsite for me. (i did suggest that i could just go to save ... read more

So, after our pleasant two hour bus journey, we had made it to Surfers Paradise- one of the most infamous stretches of coastal splendor. It was cool seeing the skyscrapers tour over the beach from a distance, I've never seen anything like it. After hopping off the bus, the first thing we did was grab a subway. I swear I must have eaten about 200 pounds worth so far! We checked into a 4 bedroom dorm at a place called Islanders which was appropriately in the centre of town. After a quick look around the place seemed really cool- fully equipped with 4 pool tables , an arcade, a pool and a jacuzzi! Lovely. We all had a little walk around to get a feel for the place and decided that it seemed quite a bit ... read more

The evening before skydiving we decided it had to be a night off the drink and an early night too, so we went to the little cinema next door to the hostel and saw a reasonably funny film called forgetting jessica parker. After spending the afternoon watching byron bay skydives it was nice to have a bit of escapism to pass the time! We got to bed early and I had a surprisingly good sleep and next thing I knew it was 6.45am and we were awake and getting ready to go do a skydive.... None of us seemed to be that nervous but it was all a little surreal. It was an absolutely perfect day without a cloud. We got picked up outside the hostel and the friendly bloke gave us all forms telling us ... read more

After using coat and shawl for ten days, its time to change the holiday destination into a place with sunshine and beaches. We decided to choose Surfers Paradise which located on Gold Coast, Queensland. It took us 1.5 hours to fly from Sydney and we couldn’t wait to arrive since we keep on imagining the picturesque beach, just like we saw on the websites and postcards. We arrived at Gold Coast’s Airport. The airport is quite small and felt so tropical. As we found wooden furnish, warm sunshine, sea smell, and many tourists using beach floral blouse. Should we say, “Aloha!”? No, I think we still should say “Hawayah?” (The way Aussies pronounces How are you?). We bought unlimited three day bus pass at the airport as we found this pass is more effective and efficient ... read more

Our new shop. Looking at a photo of the old shop it doesn't look too bad but what the photo doesn't pick up is that it was very tired and shabby. The layout is different in that the coffee machine is moved around to the right (which you don't see here) and we have eliminated one cold cabinet which was not in use and a hot pie warmer. So it is a better design, ... read more

Last week, in honor of the Easter holidays, the university closed from Good Friday (21 March) until the following Sunday (30 March), to celebrate Easter and mid semester break. Because we had so long, a group of friends and I decided to travel to Queensland, the touristy-east coast beach towns of Australia!! We spent time at the Gold Coast, the Sunshine Coast, and Fraser Island. We arrived around 8am on Sunday 23 March. After navigating through the very efficient public transport, we checked into our hostel, the Islander Backpacker Resort (super nice hostel!). From there, we decided to explore the sites of Surfers Paradise. Surfers Paradise is one of the best known landmarks of Queensland, and often referred to as the "Miami Beach" of Australia. This is due, in large part, to the commercialization of the ... read more

We left Sydney what seems like ages ago now to head for Newcastle - to be honest there was not a lot there and the most excitment was the big warehouse fire that happened outside our hotel, which require 2 fire engines, police and ambulances. Moved from there to Port Macquire which was nicer, but still a little on the quiet side, i think the easter holidays had something to do with that - everything shuts down! Went to the Bilabong zoo to see the Koalas and Kangaroos - check out the photos of the roo with a little joey in its pouch - Aww From Port Macqurie we moved to Coffs Harbour, which had some nice beaches but was very spread out, we must have walked about 10 miles a day just to get to ... read more

Queensland, Australia. The sunshine state. After a 3 & 1/2 hour bus journey from Canberra it was just 1 hour & 15 mins flight to Coolangatta which is the Gold Coast airport, right on the border of New South Wales and Queensland. The airport is a tin shack. I took off the plane and walked through to where I would collect baggage and there was my friend Kylie waiting for me in the baggage hall. Basically, anyone can walk it and take a bag. They wouldn't have got far with mine though, it was so bloody heavy! So I'm gonna keep this last blog brief as the last 3 weeks of my trip were more about spending time with my friends Kylie & Neil & their little boy Lachlan than tearing around places like I have ... read more
