Initially we had thought to drive out of Iron Range National Park via Frenchman's track which would bring us to the PDR south of Batavia Downs Station, but we had been warned against taking that route by the family camped near us. The Rangers had also put up a sign at Chili beach suggesting that travellers not take that track as the Pascoe River crossing was deep and the track was unmaintained and hence quite rough, so it wouldn't make the journey any quicker. Since we were travelling on our own and we hadn't heard of anyone doing that track and might have ended up stranded for quite some time, we decided to travel out the way we came in. When we got to the PDR we again headed north. We stopped for lunch at Moreton ... read more

We left Cooktown and drove out on the Hopevale Road again in the morning, but this time took the left turn instead to travel up 'The Cape” via Lakefield NP. Initially we had thought we'd stay at Kalpowar Crossing as several guidebooks mentioned it being a beautiful spot to camp. However we had called from Cooktown and spoke to the ranger there who told us that it was not a good camp area to get trailers into. So we decided to head to Hann Crossing to camp. On the way we stopped at the old Laura Homestead. We also stopped at White Lily and Red Lily Lagoons, which were magnificent and very picturesque with plenty of bird life (magpie geese, egrets, cormorants, red-tailed black cockatoos). The site we found on the Hann River was a bit ... read more

Hi All, Just a quick update before we disappear in the cape for the next few days. We fare welled our travel companions Julie and Craig at Mt Surprise as their inferior vehicle is not up to the testing conditions ahead. They have been great company and we will miss them as we travel north. The last few day has been very full. A visit to the Lava tubes in Undarra- impressive mostly for their sheer size and way they are formed. Then on to Chillagoe via a very pretty 4WD track and some bush camping by the Chillagoe creek. The cave at Chillagoe are amazing sort of like Jenolan. We also looked around the smelter site a photographers dream dilapidated buildings rusty machinery and red dirt hill and brick smoke stacks. The next day saw ... read more

Our journey now is South all the way. We feel very elated to have made it to the tip and now we know what to expect on the way back down too. We drive to the Jardine ferry and this time there is no waiting around and we do the short ferry ride in no time and we are off. While at the Tip we have heard a story about this river which is quite scary. The ferry only operates from 8am to 5pm and one day a few years ago a local person arrived to cross north at about 5.15pm. The ferry guys had left for the day and instead of settng up camp wih his family he decided to swim the short 100 meter (max) distance to the barge and get it to bring ... read more

We spent a couple of days at the tip. Shenton went fishing the first morning with the bikers and they had a great time, even though the water was a bit rough so they didnt catch as much as usual. They did get two beautiful fish which we all ate for breakfast the next day. The guide also took them to see some of the Islands where they fish for pearls and there are old graves of Japanese pearl divers from the past. You can still work there if you wish, they are always looking for people apparently if anyone fancies a job at the tip of Australia. The waters are extremely dangerous with various different animals from crocs to sharks and stingers etc so I wouldnt fancy a job there. The fishing guide told them ... read more

DAY 330 Oh my that was really a bad nights sleep, apart from the constant noise of music that was drifting in through the air that kept waking me up, I woke up twice with a real thirst, I wondered if it was the bacon that we had for tea made me thirsty or was it the heat or both? That said the night was a lovely temperature, we slept again under the blanket and sheet, there was no coldness about the night at all, but every now and again a nice cool breeze drifted over us. I think the music carried on until the wee hours of the morning, it would go quiet and then it would all start again. We both awoke before 7.00, Andy got up straight away but I felt more exhausted ... read more

CAIRNS / CAPE YORK / CAIRNS Ja, ja in Cairns.

We continued North to the Tip. We stayed 14km from the Tip at Punsand Bay. We have a campsite right on the beachfront. We had a swim, obviously not in the sea because the water is full of salt water crocodiles. I didn’t want to get gobbled up. We went in the small swimming pool instead. For tea, I invented a triple decker hamburger and called it the Big Al. It had bread, cheese, meat, onion, Toad in the hole (which is an egg cooked in a hole in a piece of bread), bacon, onion, tomato sauce, bbq sauce and cracked pepper. It is so yummy. In the morning we got up early and drove to the Tip before anyone else got there and while it was still low tide. Otherwise we mightn’t have reached the ... read more

Left Eliot Falls via the OTT (North end) and did 2 creek crossings before heading back to the Bypass Road. A few cars let us go past them, as we took a drive and checked out the creeks before heading off. Got to the ferry at the Jardine River and there were lots of the Endeavour Rally cars waiting to go through the check point. Some had already crossed the river, and the rest were still coming. It is a very short ferry ride for $99, but includes all your bush camping and access fees. Didn’t take long to drive from the ferry to Bamaga. Had a look at Loyalty Beach, but no pool for the kids and you can’t swim at the beach. Seisia was dry and right next to the industrial estate and wharf. ... read more

We got away from Weipa by 7.30am. Well done we thought, seeing we had to fill the water tank as well as doing Kate’s hair. Her latest hair style is a pony tail with 6, yes 6 plaits coming out of the back. Saw an older girl who does this herself every day, and it look good and lasts a few days without getting knotty - just takes a while to do. Saw the ship being loaded with Bauxite at the Weipa wharf. Made good progress up the Telegraph Road, took the Bamaga Bypass Road, it was very corrugated. Just after Captain Billy Landing the whip snapped off our aerial. It was broken so we didn’t bother trying to look for it. On to the OTT (Old Telegraph Track) to Eliot Falls and set up camp ... read more
