Endeavour River Escape - Lakelands - Musgrave Roadhouse - Coen Day 204 Friday, September14, 2007 Finally off to the Cape! Travelling via the Peninsular Developmental road (everything up here is a “something” Developmental Road - perhaps QLD needs to move on). The road initially has stretches of gravel of varying quality interspersed with brilliant sections of bitumen that are spaced at variable intervals and sometimes seem to be placed for no apparent reason. I’m sure there is some logic in there somewhere but its not immediately apparent to us. We were not too interested in this first section as we had covered it previously on our way back from Lakefield NP as far as Musgrave Roadhouse. We passed a reasonable amount of traffic heading south so hopefully we will cover what we need to see before ... read more

Punsand Bay - North towards New Guinea Fishing Charter Day213 Sunday, 23 September 2007 Fishing Charter : (www.ifishalot.com.au) We finally booked ourselves onto a fishing charter - sharing with a bloke who was also staying at Punsand Bay and whom we had met previously. Left at 7:00 am and immediately headed 14km out towards Papua New Guinea! We had no luck initially - although the fish finder/ Sounder indicated a whole swag of baitfish and following mackeral. After several passes with nothing more than the odd ‘bump” we moved across to another ‘spot’. Again we did several trolling passes before getting a hit. Brayden was first man on strike and pulled in a 1.0 - 1.2 metre Long Tom. Although they are alright to eat they are pretty bony and generally not worth keeping unless you ... read more

Punsand Bay - The Tip Day 210 Thursday, 20 September 2007 - Lazed around camp walking along the beach, sussed out about fishing charters and the trip to Thursday Island. A large charter vessel called the “Lady M” was anchored in the bay and in the morning the occupants came to the beach. As we were directly in front of where they landed we spoke with them and they were all from Mandurah!!! Apparently this group was one which initially formed as a mothers group many moons ago and they had all kept in touch and regularly went on holidays together. Interestingly though they didn’t know what the name of the place was as they reckoned they only had maritime charts which didn’t show land based features. Weird. You would reckon they would have a basic ... read more

Good morning everyone, been a long time since travelblogs, last week Don was away for five days doing a charter for aboriginals from Woorabinda Community not far from Mt. Morgan travelling to the town of Laura which is 200klms north-west of Cooktown, on aboriginal land for an aboriginal festival which is held every two years for all tribes in Queensland. For all you kiwis, average temp. there was 33deg during the day and dropping down to 19deg at night, jealous?????????? Anyway, the photos you see were taken by the Don (by permission) for you to have a look at.... read more

The following day we traveled out to Weipa the road greatly improving due to its up-keep by the Comalco mine. We joined a mine tour the following day through the bauxite mining process (which involves taking off the top soil, loading 1-9 metres of ore into trucks and then onto ships finishing with land rehabilitation that somehow overcomes a decline in altitude of up to 9m) and took plenty of photos of huge trucks (belly-dumpers) and other machinery. That night we were treated to mining-town locals at their best (admittedly it was state-of-origin) involving plenty of loud males bellowing but a great night never-the-less and after a good first half by NSW and plenty of cheering by JA going home with tail between legs. Keen for some fishing we decided to take a few days ... read more

The following day we caught the ferry to Thursday Island, learning about how to catch dugong and turtle from “Auntie Jo” who sat next to us. It involves harpooning them with a short spear attached to a rope and floats and then following them around until they get tired - not terribly humane but apparently they taste good! Our time in Thursday Island (TI) would have to be one of the highlights of our cape trip, we stayed in the Federal Hotel where the food was excellent and leisurely explored the island, taking the ferry over to Horn Island to peruse the Torres Strait Heritage Museum and Art Gallery there. There are an amazing amount of churches on TI, we counted about 7, and had a look through a quaint little cathedral near the centre ... read more

After a great night with Bruce in Coen we began our drive to the top. Coen is a little town just about in the middle of the Cape which services nearby cattle stations and travelers. It is sometimes called the capital of the Cape which is a tribute to how little civilization there is up here because there isn’t much in Coen. We crossed the Archer and Wenlock rivers on our first day without any problems, traveling through open savannah country on a pretty good road (the main road up the Cape to Weipa was in great condition, more like a dirt highway and freshly graded) where we could sometimes open the Hilux up to its lightning fast top speed of 100km/hr! Our plan for the day was to make a start on the Old ... read more

We finally left Cairns late on 3 May. All real estate agents should be shot. After promising to be there at nine she arrived at 2pm (after some coaxing) and then proceeded to take no less than 3 hours to do the inspection, requiring a livid Christine to follow her around with a cloth wiping things we had already cleaned. Nevertheless we got every cent of bond back and maintained our record of not a single $ of bond going to those nasty bastard agents for any house we have rented. The first part of our trip followed closely on our earlier trip up to Cooktown. The first night we made it to Daintree village and then took the coast road up to the Lions Den the next day and had a number of quiet ... read more

When last I wrote we were in Cooktown and left there onThursday 14th Sept and headed back to Cairns and the beautiful and green Crystal Cascades Caravan Park. As I mentioned in the last blog we had booked on a tour to take us up to Cape York and we left the van and car at Crystal Cascades for the duration. Were picked up at 7.20 am Sunday 17th Sept and joined another 15 people for the journey. Could go on and on about the people, some great, some painful but that is the joy of going on a tour. Age range would have been mid 70’s down to 30’s so a pretty good mixture. Bus was an Isuzu four wheel drive that you will see in the pictures and the tour guide was Gary who ... read more
