The Tip
Capping off a dream... Punsand Bay - The Tip Day 210
Thursday, 20 September 2007 -
Lazed around camp walking along the beach, sussed out about fishing charters and the trip to Thursday Island. A large charter vessel called the “Lady M” was anchored in the bay and in the morning the occupants came to the beach. As we were directly in front of where they landed we spoke with them and they were all from Mandurah!!! Apparently this group was one which initially formed as a mothers group many moons ago and they had all kept in touch and regularly went on holidays together. Interestingly though they didn’t know what the name of the place was as they reckoned they only had maritime charts which didn’t show land based features. Weird. You would reckon they would have a basic map. Each to their own.
With all the necessary logistical stuff all done we went for the drive to “The Tip”. A short cut from Punsand Bay takes you along a 4WD track to the main road which then leads on to what was the Pajinka Lodge and thence onto the tip. After parking the car we walked through what remains of the
The ubiquitous sign
Seen it many a time in magazines - now we have our own photo. Pajinka Lodge and through the small rainforest boardwalk before walking along the rocky peninsula and finally on to the northernmost point of Australia…..and one of the main objectives of this trip.
As we walked along the rocky peninsula, being blown to oblivion by a howling easterly, we saw the “Lady M” anchored just off the tip on the western side - sheltered from the winds. The same group was at the Tip taking their photos. I couldn’t wait to get up and stand on that point - a culmination of a dream I’ve had to do this for a very long time. It was pretty amazing to think that we were standing on the most northerly point of the Australian mainland. A somewhat surreal experience for me… and a great thing to do for us as a family. We got the obligatory photos (should have had a shave last night so I’m looking like a bit of a wildman!!!). Unfortunately we should have thought about the celebratory drink - but alas we didn’t, fortunately the boat group had champers at hand (not surprisingly I guess) and they were kind enough to offer us a glass. We took them up
The sign from the back
How many people dont even look at the back..but its got the coords of the tip. on their offer and again took some photos. Certainly tops off the trip. The charter group headed back to their boat and we had the place to ourselves - all alone on ‘The Tip’. As Bruce McAvaney would say - “Special” Definitely one of those things you have to do in your life as an Aussie.
