Thursday 21st July 2011 Moreton Telegraph Station to Eliot Falls On through the corrugations! There have sometimes been some panoramic views as we crest the hills, and today we’ve come through glades of tree ferns or maybe cycads. Also seen some huge anthills. At times it feels as if we’re SURFING the corrugations – just like on a wave, it carries you forward and it’s hard to get off! Fruit Bat Falls was a pretty lunch spot, and a good waterhole (if you had time for a swim). From there we went onto the Old Telegraph Line track, which was pretty rough and narrow. We made it to Eliot/Twin Falls after an exciting creek crossing (see photos). We’ll have to return the same way as the link road across to the Peninsula Development Road (PDR) has ... read more

Hey guys, we finally made it to the top of Oz today. Was a great experience that every Aussie should do. Highly recommended! The atmosphere there was great, there were heaps of people but everyone was chatting & in great spirits. Nobody minded waiting to get a pic near the famous sign. Funny how many kilometres people travel just to see that little sign saying 'You are standing at the northern most point of the Australian continent' The 15 minute walk over steep rocks to get to the tip didn't even really bother anyone either. We also spent a small fortune at the Croc Tent which is basically just a souvenir shop in a tent. We also went to the World War 2 plane wrecks in the area. We are thinking of going on a chopper ... read more

Hi guys, we are at Loyalty Beach which is near Seisia, only about 40kms from the tip of Australia. It is a beautiful campground & we have a site right on the water but unfortunately they are back burning & there is smoke everywhere so we are all coughing. We will make the trek to the tip either tomorrow or Wednesday. We are having gearbox troubles so the car is going to a mechanic at Seisia tomorrow so who knows how long that will take. Anyway take care. :o)... read more

We set up camp at Loyalty Beach, a lovely camping spot outside Seisia. After getting the vehicles rear bars fixed, we headed to the tip a 40 minute drive through dry bush and a lush rainforest. We stopped for the obligatory stop at The Croc Tent, purchasing various souvenirs, and then eagerly headed north. We took the easy path there, along the beach then climbed the headland; a steep, rocky climb that was fun with an almost five and a just two year old but so worth it. This part of Australia is harsh, rugged and steep but absolutely breath-taking with 300 degree views. We all stood for the group shot at the tip before we headed back over the headland towards the car park. The return journey was longer but provided fantastic views over the ... read more

Finally made it

The next morning we made our way back to Twin Falls and Elliot Falls which were well worth the effort. Lorelei again enjoyed a swim, this time with Toni, Mitchell, Dave and Stephen. We reluctantly left to tackle the last 26 kms of the track which included the dreaded Nolan’s Brook and five other water crossings. Al and Dave took the difficult line out of Canal Creek choosing to avoid a little mud. Although tricky it proved no problem for these two men. The next few crossings were all fairly shallow but required careful planning of the steep entrances and exits. Crossing the log bridge at Cypress Creek was fairly uneventful even with the trailers. Thankfully we only looked under the bridge after we had crossed otherwise we may have reconsidered. We were starting to think ... read more

Day two saw us start with negotiating the Bertie Creek crossing. Although shallow there was a tricky dog-leg to get onto the crossing and some deep holes to avoid. Steve fulfilled the role of crossing guide, venturing into all the crossings and finding the best line for the vehicles then guiding Al and Dave across. The Cholmondeley crossing had us all tongue-tied but was uneventful. Then we arrived at Gunshot. After half an hour looking at it, Al and Dave both decided that we were not getting down Gunshot with the trailers without a bit of groundwork first (as in a whole day). We went, we saw, we bypassed. After a 26 km bypass we were back on the track and continued north to Cockatoo. This crossing was the first with an obvious croc warning sign ... read more

Where to begin! The last three days have seen us tackle the Overland Telegraph Track or “The Tele”. There were some tricky crossings, great camping and beautiful landscapes to keep us all satisfied. Day one began at Bramwell Junction at about 1.00pm. We hoped to make it to a camping spot that we had heard about on Bertie Creek. The first crossing was Palm Creek which was an eye opener. We all hoped that wouldn’t be an indication of what was to come as the entrance was steep, slippery and full of deep drops with the exit much of the same. With many spectators, Dave went first. Down was ok but he needed to be winched out of the other side. Al followed with the same result. Lorelei loved it, Mitchell did not. The next few ... read more

Although we are eager to make our way further north, leaving Lakefield is disappointing as it is a beautiful little piece of Queensland. We set out heading for Coen but a local at Musgrave Roadhouse suggested we push on until Archer River which we did. Archer River, which consists of a roadhouse and a river, is a nice place to break the journey. The river crossing, 1 minute from the campgrounds, is a safe swimming spot which Lorelei and Mitchell made the most of. They also enjoyed patting the friendly horses that came up to the fence each afternoon and climbing the rocks that littered the area. We had some success with the camp oven here with a fruit loaf and tea cake, each of which only lasted one meal. Friday night’s entertainment was supplied by ... read more
