Well we made it all the way to the top of Cape York Penninsula! They say it is life changing to visit but I'm not to sure about that. Perhaps they should say you will never forget it. Those corrugations are definately unforgetable! We are glad we have experienced this remote part of Oz. We even drove a little bit of the Telegraph Track!..and our car lives to tell the story. . The first leg of this journey from Weipa all the way to the Jardine River where the ferry crosses was a big haul in one day. Corugations starting to get bad now but nothing that a good coffee followed by a few drinks at the end dosen't fix. The Jardine River Ferry Campgroung was a very welcome site and was a great place to ... read more

A lot has happened since our last blog, we spent a night just north of Coen by a little stream where i fixed a few minor damages to the car. The road turned nasty just after Musgrave Roadhouse with corrugations 300mm apart and about 150mm high we thought the car was going to fall apart i have never seen anything like it. The camp near Coen was free and very nice and the plan was to travel to a cattle station for the following night and then on to Weipa. We pulled in to Merluna Cattle Station at lunch time and the car gave us its first sign of bad things to come, problems getting it to start but it wasnt till we went to leave the next day that the true extent of the problem ... read more

We left Karumba early to fuel up for the 700km trek across the dirt to Hann River on the Peninsula development road. The Burke development road was quite good at first but we soon found ourselves on corrugations and dodging pot holes for the most of the first days travel. In the late afternoon we finally rolled in to our stop for the night on 12 Mile Lagoon, and after some argument about crocs which Kylie eventually won we set up camp about 80 meters up a hill from the waters edge. Tried fishing before dark but once again only catfish, and then about 5 minutes before bed we heard a loud splashing in the water and upon investigation with the torch found ourselves lookìng at 3 sets of evil eyes in the water, good choice ... read more

Thursday 28th July – Musgrave Roadhouse to Cooktown via Lakefield NP This is actually part 2 of this day's trip, so I can put more photos up with it. Somewhere after the 2nd Lakefield water crossing we hit a few bumps and holes and managed to dislodge a plug lead(!) which (not surprisingly) caused a lot of difficulty in running. Phil promptly replaced the lead, and we limped along for a while, gradually losing drive although the engine was still (sort of) running. We ended up on the end of a tow rope from Phil's car and crawled to the ranger station where we could get off the road and have a proper look. The rangers at the station were somewhat sniffy about us being out here in these old cars, but became more friendly when ... read more

Wednesday 27th July – Coming Back South Musgrave Roadhouse last night was the opposite of Moreton Telegraph Station – very busy. Maybe Moreton will get them all tonight. We have had some new and interesting territory to cover today, and it has been quite eventful in the car department. It was new road (to us) immediately upon leaving Musgrave Roadhouse, which is at a junction. We were talking to a couple last night about our roof tent - they were very interested in it as they'd just spent a night in Lakefield National Park, where they'd seen 7 snakes near their campsite. We were headed for Lakefield NP, but luckily not to spend a night there. I think a snake could probably get into a roof tent if it wanted to! ... read more

Tuesday 26th July – Coming Back South Some mornings, you head out on the road and it looks like it’s going on forever (like this photo). There has been a little bit of rain around here, and it’s greyish looking today but probably won’t amount to much. Or we hope not, as our cars haven’t had a “wet” test yet! ... read more

Monday 25th July – Coming Back South Having made our trip to the Tip yesterday, our small Group has now become 3 duos, each following a different itinerary for various reasons. So we are now just Nigel and I in the 505, and Phil and Paul in the 404. We didn’t need to rush off from Seisia too early as we were only travelling 270kms, so we did a small stock-up at the Seisia supermarket, and hit the road about 10:15. An uneventful trip saw us setting up camp at Moreton Telegraph Station once more. When we stayed here on the way north, the campground was very busy, although not crowded. This time (could it be because it’s early in the week?) there is hardly anyone here – nice, ‘cos we don’t have to wait for ... read more

Sunday 24th July Cape York - To The Tip Part 2 Cape York is a populous place these days, with a well-worn trail to get there, quite unlike our Peugeot trip of 2009 when on the Tanami Track in particular, we didn’t see many other people. After the Tip, we drove to Somerset Beach for lunch, past the site of the Somerset homestead – nothing left there now. Somerset Beach is very pretty, and has an interesting “message post” where over the years people have marked their presence with all kinds of items – we didn’t leave anything! ... read more

Sunday 24th July Cape York - To The Tip! Not your usual suburban Sunday trip to The Tip to offload some household cast-offs, but to the Tip of Australia, Cape York. First stop on the road was the Croc Tent, a facility with an interesting history, run by an enterprising family. They have lots of info about the Cape which they’re happy to share – also some off-beat souvenirs to buy if you want! The Croc Tent is only 17kms from The Tip, but it took us almost an hour to get there as the road beyond this point is quite rough. Also we stopped for lots of photos! Having reached the beach, we had to wade a bit and clamber over rocks to get to the Tip – there were many people there who you’d ... read more

Friday 22nd July 2011 Eliot Falls to Seisia Left Eliot Falls about 9:30 – it was practically deserted at that time. We backtracked through the exciting water crossing, past Fruit Bat Falls, and then back on to the Bamaga Road. The corrugations seem to get worse the further north you go although they are actually doing quite a bit of road work on this section. We had lunch on the northern side of the Jardine River ferry. Even though this northern part of the Cape is alcohol restricted and a quarantine area, no-one has stopped us to check anything! Arrived at Seisia soon after lunch to be once more re-united with the entire group, who had that day been to “the Tip” which is not the rubbish tip, but the northern tip of the Australian mainland. ... read more
