A culture that is largely unrecognized.Thursday Island and the Torres Strait islands are so rich in culture and custom. It's part of Queensland yet we know so little about it. It's a bit of a united nations with Aboriginal, islander, Polynesian, Melanesian, Malaysian and Japanese influences. The features of a Thursday islander are finer than the aboriginal Australian. Yet you go further north you can see where the races mix and the less distinctive features of each race as they meld together. We took the cat from Seisia to TI and... read more

Searching for crocs - what lies beneathI liked Kalpower crossing campground it was high up off the creek banks. High enough that if a croc decided to take a hike up the embankment of about 8 metres vertical drop I might have a chance of getting away. Apparently you run in a zig zag direction. I think me doing that would only serve to make me giddy, fall over and get eaten or rather "taken". Crocs "take you" that sounds entirely sinister... Not content to just have a good old munch they secrete you away and nibble at you over a long period o... read more

The Red Dirt - all pervasiveMusgrave Station roadhouse has a grave It is a mound of red dirt underneath an ancient mango tree at the Roadhouse entrance. It's the grave of Samuel Thompson which coincidentally is the name of my great grandfather. They didn't get to be too old up here in the early days this bloke was 36 when he died. ... read more

Pajinka - Cape YorkWe decided to have a morning swim at Eliot Falls. Tried to wash the worries of the Gunshot experience away. The car is good - tough even. B2 has run it's gauntlet and so we are off to the Tip ... Cape York.... Or the lovely indigenous name of Pajinka. ... read more

Before and after CookPajinka done ....tick. We decided on a bit if a late start today. A bit of a sleep in and time to hang around and relax after the mission to get to the top. That didn't last long. Wayne's feet get itchy so off we went exploring elsewhere around the top. ... read more

Ye Olde Telegraph TrackTime to get out of Chili Beach before we lose the tent -the winds would not abate. Its a shame though its really beautiful On leaving we took the right fork instead of left and explored the little bays and inlets around the area. People try to build lives out here in these remote places but you can see that the weather reclaims everything. <... read more

THURSDAY 23.5.2013 Had an early night last night after dinner, it was so cold earlier in the evening that I had to get a couple of ports in our flasks to warm ourselves up!!, so after a couple of reds with dinner we were ready for bed, during the night we went past Bundaberg, Gladstone and are now heading towards the Whitsundays but will pass through there during the night. Busy morning seeing the ice carving on the deck, also a trivia session and then after lunch went to a Lecture "Navigating the Great Barrier Reef" hosted by Reef Pilot Captain David Richardson, very funny, dry sense of humour, we both thoroughly enjoyed his talk and before we knew it, an hour had gone by, he was an ex ship captain but now does the Great ... read more

2nd November, 2012 Packed up our camp and it was time to move on to our next destination, Normanton (The Gulf of Carpentaria). We enjoyed our adventure to the Cape and I would love to do it again. Stopped in Bamaga for morning tea before heading back on that terrible, dusty dirt road. From Bamaga to Normanton is about 1550km, but Daniel wanted to try a short-cut through a dirt track which would cut this distance by 325km. However, there was no petrol station from Laura to Normanton (568km via the dirt track), so we decided to stop at Laura for fuel. Unfortunately, the service station in Laura was closed and we camped here for the night.... read more
