Well, one week left and I cannot wait to get back to work. I'm now quite poor, but still have enough to take a 6 hour trip on the Great Barrier Reef. I still think Cairns is an odd city, it's more touristy than anything I have seen so far. Also, it does rain in Australia I have found. I thought it'd be dry, but it's rained 83.5% of my days here. Tomorrow, though, we're going to Cape Tribulation! I hope to see the 20ft salt water crocodiles I've been hearing and learning about. Also, I'm going to hold a koala before this trip is over, damn it. IT WILL HAPPEN! I only have two more things of concern in my classes. In a few hours I will have a biology final, which I'm not too ... read more

It is markedly hotter here than NZ. Cairns is an odd city and I can't really describe it. There are bats (large ones) in the trees by the city library and they screech like a mixture of pig/baby cries. There are hundreds of parrots that gather at dusk in the city center. Didgeridoos are only $25! I'm sitting in a "Kwikmart" type of store, paying the cheapest fees I can for internet ($3.50/hr). This is across from a large hotel/casino/rainforest dome, called the Reef. The hotel we're staying at Used to be called Inn The Tropics and I was surprised TravelBlog actually had it in their locations list. It is, by far, the jankiest P.O.S. place I have stayed at. It reminds me of Mexico in a way. The hotel is also trying to be a ... read more

Hi All, so we (i.e. John) haven't updated the blog in a long while and the pressure of it all is getting to John, so in a show of true partnership and support I am going to flex my literary muscles and tackle my inaugural blog (I'm about as excited as getting an English essay for homework in your last class of the day on a Friday afternoon but sure I'll give it a lash anyway). We're in New Zealand's North Island at the moment and we (well John) hasn't updated the blog since Sydney so I'll bring you up to speed on our East Coast trip and John's tapping out the South Island adventures as we speak. First off, here'a a tip: Don't go to Cairns in Febuary. Our lack of research into to the ... read more

After we left the Steve and Sharon’s in the Daintree we headed to Kym’s sister Gabe’s home in Cairns, Gabe’s hubby Das was on his week off on R&R and their two boys Jacob and Daniel opened their home to us. Cairns was very hot and consequently we spent time recovering from a couple of thirst quenching sessions lounging in deliciously cool aircon - what a treat!! In the days we spent in Cairns Gabe and Das showed us to a couple of freshwater swimming holes, and we all went up the into the hills behind Cairns for a day at the market town of Kuranda. There are several market places there, along with the Australian Venom zoo and a butterfly sanctuary. We did the tour of the venom zoo which had tanks of lots of ... read more

‘Raging Thunder’ When we booked the white water rafting trip we had the option of regular or EXTREME…it didn’t take long to make the decision. We were picked up from the hostel at 6:30am and driven by bus into the hills towards the Tully River which was actually used to film a scene from Jurassic Park; how awesome is that? It was about a 1.5hr drive to get to the destination and much of it was up a very narrow, windy road through the hillside. Along the way we saw signs that warning of crocodiles and the guide informed us that we would probably get injured in some way (snake bite, croc attack, poisonous spider, thorn bushes) if we tried to explore the dense topical forest in the area. They also told us that the difference ... read more

Nick and I arrived in Cairns yesterday at 9:00am on a Qantas flight. Getting off of the aircraft we immediately noticed the intense humidity, Cairns is known as one of the most humid places in Australia. At 9:00am it was already 30C and we drenched with sweat before we could even take our shirts off. We were picked up from the airport and shuttled to our hostel which is called NJoy. It is pretty nice and has a swimming pool and pool table among other things. At $35.00 dollars a night for a room with a fridge, air conditioning (everything in Australia has air conditioning), two beds and a shower...pretty good deal considering we only spend time in the room when we sleep. At 12:00pm we were picked up from the hostel by Cairns Sky Diving ... read more
