So after Mission Beach we caught our last bus up the East Coast to Cairns... it was raining when we arrived and we haven't seen the sun for longer than an hour for nearly a week!! Cairns is small for a city but full of tourist tour operators and links to go on tours to the reef, Kuranda and tours upto Cape Tribulation which is in the heart of the tropical rainforest. we stayed in a place called Rosie's backpackers for a few days with Charlotte while Louise and Megan finished their live-aboard dive course (which they absolutely loved!). unfortunately when the weather is crap in Cairns there isn't much to do apart from sitting around the hostel or wandering into town to go on the cheap internet or recieve our free evening meals with ... read more

As you can see, I had to put the Koala photos first as they are THE BEST!!!! They are such sweet things! They just literally sit in your arms and snuggle you. I had to pay extra to hold it and have a professional photo with it, we were allowed to take extra photos with our own camera, I was just passing Mr Koala over to Chris to hold and the girl who thought she was in charge said we had to pay EVEN MORE just for Chris to hold!?!?! They dont half rip you off at these places. . ... read more

The Arrival I slept almost the entire way to Cairns, but woke up in time to look out my window and see a gorgeous coastline - my first glimpse of Australia!! For the about 20 minutes while we flew over the northern tip of Australia, my eyes were glued to my window. Here it was, a country I’d been longing to see for as long as I could remember. HERE IT WAS!!! When we finally began our decent I couldn’t have been more excited. The Cairns airport was small, and mostly filled with Qantas planes, so our 747 Cathay Pacific plane was quite an addition. As I exited the plane, I was hit with the weather almost instantly - suffocatingly humid and hot. Quite the stark contrast to the snowy Toronto I had left behind. Customs ... read more
