DAY 307 After all the fantastic information we had received from Ann at QPWS (Queensland Parks & Wildlife Services), and doing the Copperlode Dam walk the other day, see blog day 304 07 09 2009 (Copperlode Dam to Crystal Cascades) we wanted to get some more walks in, so had loosely decided on a walk that started at Wrights Lookout, just beyond the Barron Falls Lookout, and went on to the McDonalds track. The information said it was a 4.7 Kilometer walk each way, to the Douglas track, and is a historic track (we are not certain why so historic). Approximately 2ks from the Surprise Creek crossing, the rainforest opens up into open grassland, providing us with fabulous views over the gorge and Lower Barron falls. We parked the truck, Caroline took a couple of photos, ... read more

DAY 306 For some strange reason I was up at silly O’clock this morning and I don’t know why, but typing the blog retrospectively we try to make mental notes, or written notes, but for the life of me I cannot remember what was on my mind yesterday morning, except that neither of us had a good nights sleep, we felt a little deflated yesterday so I think it just remains on my mind. We had an invitation this morning to go and have coffee with Pamela and Terry up at their splendid hillside pad up at Palm Cove, we need to be there for 10.30 so lazing around in bed was not an option as we needed to shower and get ready. After showers and breakfast, we hopped in the truck and drove across town ... read more

DAY 305 Andy was up before me this morning (nothing unusual there then!), I expected my muscles to be a little bit sore after yesterdays hike from Copperlode Dam to Crystal Cascades and back again, but no, we both feel absolutely fine. I don’t think we are going to have a lot to write about today as today is more about sorting out our future here rather than the tourist bit. We had an introduction to a local agency to help us with looking for work in the Cairns area or at least in the Tropical North Queensland, so Andy spoke to this chap first thing this morning and we suddenly have an appointment this afternoon to pop in and see them. Now, I am not really prepared for interviews or anything at the moment, I ... read more

DAY 304 Far from having those Monday morning Blues, I woke up, jumped out of bed and put the kettle on, today we were finally going to walk the trail from Copperlode Dam to Crystal Cascades. Before Caroline was up, I had made the sandwiches, filled the camelbak, got the boots, together made sure the first aid kit was in the rucksack, well walking with Caroline can be hazardous. verything was done, Caroline had had her morning tea, and so after a light breakfast we were in the truck and heading up the mountain towards Copperlode Dam. About the walk from the Internet: Copperlode Dam (Lake Morris) to Crystal Cascades is a steep track over rough terrain and involves strenuous physical activity. The walk can be done from either direction. If you wish to walk ... read more

DAY 303 Again it was out intention that today Sunday we were going to do a big walk, but as we did not get in from a fantastic night out last night until after 2.30 am, we struggled to move our lazy backsides out of bed. Caroline was up first and brought me tea in bed, how wonderful it was after all it is usually my duty, but today it was my turn. We didn’t really come around until about 10.00am and lolled around the house really enjoying the Sunday that we had. After the papers were scoured through and cruising around the internet, the TV went on and we settled down in to a film which was just the worst thing we could have done, we both just settled down in to the sofa’s ... read more

DAY 302 Oh Saturday morning, what bliss. Hang on a moment what am I saying? Everyday is like Saturday for us, although you do still get that Saturday feeling, maybe its being in a real house that does it, some kind of normality that kicks in those normal emotions, I always remember thinking how great Saturday mornings are with the whole weekend stretching out ahead of you and 2 whole days of no work. Not long after getting up I hear a noise outside, it is fairly loud but difficult to describe, I look out the window and see a rope or cable being dragged up through the trees next door, I look even further up to see what was at the end of the rope, it is hanging off a pylon, and the pylon is ... read more

DAY 301 I have no idea what time I got out of bed this morning, except that Andy was out before me and I did have a cup of tea brought to me. The weather had improved on yesterday, that is to say that today has not started with rain. Our, what by now is becoming, a usual morning routine is complete, but one thing is on my mind today and is very pressing. A while ago when we were in Katherine, well it all seems such a while ago now anyway, I spent the afternoon burning discs, I know, how exciting I can hear you all say, but at that point with some 11,000 photographs we were getting desperate to ensure that all of these photos were backed up, we should have done it ... read more

DAY 300 We both awoke with a start at around 6.00 this morning, something unusual was happening outside and it was quite noisy, yes we awoke to the sound of torrential rain. We are not hugely familiar with this strange phenomenon right now, the last bout of this tropical type rain we had was a very brief spell while in Broome and right now I cannot remember exactly when we were in Broome, I will need to check back the blog’s to figure that one out. The one thing that we both agree on is that we are very thankful not to be sleeping in the trailer this morning, although we know that the tent and trailer copes well with this rain, it is not really ideal for camping. The last time that we were ... read more

DAY 299 The start to our days are nice and easy, we wake up when it is daylight or at least when the sunshine creeps in through the trees and thus through the window. We read and have our breakfast, sometimes sitting on the cool veranda and enjoying this beautiful environment. The blogs are going to start being less interesting again as there will be days, like today, where we have not done very much, but hopefully they will be interspersed by days out. Today we are going to pop around to some of the local camping shops as we need to add a few things to our kit for when we are back out on the road again. First we pop into the Australian immigration department, as we wanted to find out when we ... read more

DAY 298 With one of the major things we had to do now out of the way, today we decided to go and explore some of the surrounding area in Cairns, so after breakfast Caroline grabbed the local area map (I think she has a map for everything and everywhere) and we headed off to the bat mobile. We drove out of town and headed for the Copperlode dam which is about 25k’s from the city, it was a spectacular drive climbing for about 16 Kilometres through beautiful rain forest canopy, where the sky just seemed to burst out open when you got to the top. At the road stops along the road climb we pulled in to take pictures, and looking over the city, which is said to be small is actually spread over ... read more
