Today we were flying up to the Whitsundays on the North East coast for a 3 day sailing trip. It was an early start, waking up at 5am to catch the shuttle from our hotel to the Airport. Once at the airport we checked in and got some breakfast – a Boost fruit smoothie and a Mc Ds sausage and egg mcmuffin. The flight was a little delayed leaving Sydney, so we missed our connecting ferry from Hamilton Island to Able Point Marina. But when we arrived at Hamilton Island it didn’t seem to be a problem as they have ferries leaving from Hamilton to Airlie Beach every 30mins so they booked us on the next ferry that was just about to leave. The ferry made one stop in Hamilton Island Marina on the way over ... read more

In my childhood, Sundays were dedicated to completing chores, finishing homework, and I often found time in a mess of stickers and stationary to write to my pen-pal, Cheree. In the background, my Dad would blast his great 70s and 80s music through indestructible speakers from his college era. The song that really made him belt it out was Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young “Southern Cross.” Appropriately, I had this song ready to jam through my IPOD at any time. Really, the song is about a break-up, but throughout this adventure I couldn’t get that song out of my head. After leaving Arilie Beach, I badly wanted to call up my Dad and tell him that I’ve just spent two nights under the most brilliant group of constellations, including the Southern Cross. &l... read more

Not a lot to report today I'm afraid. I was having far too much fun in the sun. Exhausted from the drive yesterday, I thought it best to lie by the Airlie Beach lagoon for a few hours, writing my Christmas cards and taking a dip in the warm water. The lagoon is the same as Cairns - at the shore line but with a much more beautiful view of the ocean, with gorgeous yachts bobbing in the harbour, and the Whitsunday islands on the horizon. The palm trees that line the shore just give it a real feeling of being in a tropical paradise. Jealous yet?! Aside from that, I managed to post the cards and do my washing, see a rat the size of a cat, and decide to go on an ocean raft ... read more

So got myself up to Airlie beach via Hamilton island on the whitsundays, to be met by rain, well tropical warm rain, however not good for sailing trip. Still it was perfect so that i could catch up on admin and downloading pics etc. Two days later the sun shone just as i headed out on the Powerplay catamaran for the 2 days sailing around the whitsunday islands. The crowd onboard were fun and the nice too. The sailing experience was nice all in all and Whithaven beach did live up to its world class beach status. The weather luckily was perfect for sailing and sunbathing, so no complaints there. Made some lovely new friends onboard and had a great time. Thoroughly enjoyed watching the dolphins swim around the boat at night. It was magical. However, ... read more

After a relatively short journey (5 hours) we got to Rainbow beach which would be our base for our tour of Fraser Island. We stayed at Frasers on Rainbow, unfortunately had quite possibly the most uncomfortable beds we have experienced to date, they had a water proof plastic lining around the mattress, we could only assume this was to prevent bed bugs and not in case we lost all control of our bladder through the heavy consumption of alcohol, but on the plus a balcony overlooking the pool and a relaxed bar and vibe. To be able to cook in the kitchen supplied, one would need skills parable to that of a Krypton factor contestant as nothing was ever as it seemed and various kitchen implements were been used to peel the modest spud. So it ... read more

Hi Everyone! After the bus fiasco I was feeling terribly homesick and cried to Anton, saying I wanted to get the next plane home. He managed (once again) to calm me down and put everything into perspective and I felt much better. We got on the 1pm bus (horray!!) to Airlie Beach and made it to Airlie without a hitch (phew). We had booked into a Youth Hostel Association hostel and were really pleased to find it clean and very pleasant. Our room was small and a twin (with some bed moving, we made it into double) but it had air-con and we only had to share a bathroom with one other double room. After a good nights sleep, we got up and, as we liked the hostel, we decided to become YHA members (as we ... read more

Hello from Australia! I've been travelling down the East Coast of Australia for about 3 weeks, the weather is extremely hot here as it's currently Summer (feels very strange in November)! At the moment I'm in a town called Airlie Beach, staying with a friend that I met in Fiji. Tomorrow I'm going on a 2 day sailing trip around the Whitsunday Islands, where hopefully I'll get to see lots of marine life whilst snorkelling, and the Great Barrier Reef. I still have about a month left in Australia before moving on to Thailand for Christmas and New Year. I'm hoping that the flooding in Thailand will be a bit better by December! Me and my 2 friends are still unsure what we will be eating for Christmas dinner, but quite sure it won't be a ... read more

G'day from sunny Oz! Sorry for the long gap between blog posts - we've been busy busy everyday pretty much it seems! But Australia has lived up to expectations so far - we started in Cairns about 10 days ago and are now further down south in Airlie Beach for a few more days. Cairns was a great place to start as we were thrown straight into crocodiles and spiders in the rainforests (not literally). Unfortunately (or luckily in my opinion) we didn't see any crocs in the wild, but did see some in the animal sanctuary - Rich held one! We did a great day tour where we got to swim in waterfalls and lakes up near the rainforest - and the tour guide had a brilliant concept for the day: swim, eat, swim, eat, ... read more

Saturday 12 Nov Today we went to Conway Beach (just out of Airlie Beach) with Paulette and Barry (neighbours at Airlie Cove caravan park) to have a look at a vintage car show. Some great old vintage cars on show - the day was quite hot though - the car show was held at the caravan park and is a very nice park with some interesting paint colours used around the park - all the different colours give the park a very happy feel to it. The different coloured doors are in the ladies toilet but the whole park is painted in these different colours including all the park cabins. In the evening we all went into Airlie Beach town to have a meal and caught the bus in - it has been quite a while ... read more

So we left Hanoi late Friday night in October sometime (seems like such a long time ago now!) and flew to Bangkok. Spent an uncomfortable, but not dreadful, night on the floor of Bangkok airport then flew into Sydney the next day. Tired and hungry we landed ourselves on Joe's amazing Uncle Steven who we had a fantastic time staying with. It was great to be back in a normal house and they supplied us with lots of lovely food and drink, their house is also gorgously located right next to Kilcare beach and so our planned two night stay turned into four. We even managed to acquire a surf board off one of their surfer friends and spent a while failing to stand up. On Thursday we went back into Sydney to pick up our ... read more
