After a very very very long bus ride, we arrived in the stunning Airlie Beach! Definitely my favourite place, in fact I would love to live here!! Its a small, funky town right on the beach which is the only way to get to the Whitsundays! We spent the first couple of days sorting some things out like washing etc (the joys of backpacking!) then checked in for our party boat for the next few days! We are heading out on a boat called the Clipper which is a massive party boat! It holds over 200 people but they only take about 50 and you spend 2days, 2 nights sailing around the Whitsundays and snorkelling/lying on a beach - heaven!! Our first day we sailed out for a few hours before stopping in Hook Passage which ... read more

Being the gateway to the Whitsunday Islands, Airlie Beach is an absolute must... Airlie is only a small coastal hub, but its constantly abuzz pretty much all year round with the flow of national and international guests heading out to the islands... So... where to begin... As far as islands go, there are a whopping 74 tropical islands in the Whitsundays... most are completely deserted, however there are 8 of which have resorts... The deluxe of course is Hayman Island - Australia's most awarded 5* resort, but theres also Hamilton Island, Hook Island, Brampton Island, Daydream Island, Lindeman Island, Long Island and South Molle Island... If you are however, more into sleeping outdoors, then there are a few other islands that will allow camping... And what to do... well... take your pick... theres not a way ... read more

Picked up at hotel by mini bus - you should have seen their face when I got on with my crutches. Down to Coral Reef jetty and we knew instantly that this was going to be fun. The boat is a converted navy RIB called Wild Thing with 2 x 4 stroke Yamaha engines. Man is this a powerful beast. The crew were easy going and we got an instant feel that this was going to be a www trip (wet, wild and whacky). It started out with the most amusing safety briefing before doing a couple of doughnuts at and then a fast white ride to Hill Inlet. Here we did a short uphill bush walk to a lookout point with the most amazing views of the northern end of Whitehaven Beach and the beautiful ... read more

Like I said in my last blog we got up and went to the lookout over Bowen this morning. We then made our way down to Airlie beach. We stopped at a tourist information center on our way and booked a place to stay called Club Crocodile and we ended up booking our Whitsunday sailing trip as the price had dropped from what we saw online. We had to check in at the office for the boat first so we headed there first. We had to fill in some information for them and let them know our food restrictions if any. We were warned that the boat needed 12 people to go and there were currently only 9 people booked for the next day. If it wasn't going to go we would be put on a ... read more

Airlie Beach was different to the other area's in Queensland it was actually very busy due to the entry point to the Whitsunday Islands. Unfortunately I wasn't able to visit due to two cyclones hitting the east coast. The first one hit a catergory 2 and knocked out the power for about 16 hours and it rained all day, so basically did nothing, not even going the beach. The power went out as the Murray match started so missed him lose again. I decided to leave as the Whitsundays wasn't going to be opened for another 5 or 6 days with a catergory 5 cyclone hitting the coast, so jumped on the next bus out. A lot of people were actually being evacuated for safety. So I have missed out on one of the highlights of ... read more

You know your in Australia when you turn up at a hotel called 'The Croc Club' and find the lady at reception is doing battle with a roaming snake behind the desk. "Ah it's only a brown snake, they won't harm ya" she said as she recovered from her fluster to check us in. The Croc Club had all the makings of a very nice place with well appointed rooms, a large bar and a swimming pool. However, as we picked up our bags and headed for the room the snake charmer behind reception remembered "oh and you can't swim in the pool today...there's a snake in there!". We were in Airlie Beach on the Whitsunday coast. This small, yet lively town, much like Cairns, has grown around it's harbour and burgeoning tourist scene. The boisterous ... read more

Most of today was taken up with driving. Without the mishaps of yesterday we made it Airley beach. This is apparently Queensland’s answer to Byron Bay. There were some guys from the campsite in Cairns that we have been bumping into since we left. One of them had recommended a campsite in Airley Beach. We found it and checked in while Gem went for a walk around the site. When she returned she had some bad news. There were hundreds of screaming kids running about. We went to get some shopping and returned to the campsite with a plan. Kieran ran in and gave them a sob story about having to cut our trip short due to some family news. Luckily they believed him and gave him a refund. We were all very pleased when we ... read more
