Eure Uli... read more

We checked into Beaches hostel in Airlie Beach and was put into a room with a weird Swedish couple that whispered when they spoke (when they spoke, as in, hardly ever), and two guys from Finland. Lene and I wanted to celebrate our spontaneous move to Airlie so bought a box of goon. (For those of you who aren't aware, 'goon' is a cheap, low quality wine made from waste, literally. Ingredients include: fish eggs and milk and is designed to get you smashed on a low budget. Oh, and it tastes like cat's piss). Nonetheless, we drank on the beach, with the two Finnish guys tagging along (but not drinking as they were driving to Brisbane the following day). So drank, and got drunk. We decided we wanted to go swimming, but the sea smelt ... read more

We arrived in Airlie and went straight to the same hostel as before, Beaches (mainly because they have a $6.50 meal deal that is to die for; Steak and chips + a beer or wine). We were given the luxury room. Now I know what you're all thinking, 'there's no such thing as a luxury hostel', but for a backpacker, this room was to drool over; Two bedrooms, two bathrooms, a big shower, a couch, a fridge, and a television, (although the tv didn't actually work, it was more for show, but we didn't tell people that. By the end, I actually thought it quite rude of them to put a broken tv in our room, it was just teasing us). Anyway, all of this for just $20 a night. We were living like kings, and ... read more

We arrived in Airlie beach after our 12 hour bus journey around 10:30am, absolutely shattered we thought we would check ourselves in for our Catamaran trip the next day, only to be told once we got to the travel shop that we had to be ready in four hours.......we hadn't showered yet, bought our booze, changed clothes or anything, VERY underprepared. So showering was first on our agenda, we had to shower in an outside beach shower next to the lagoon in front of on-lookers, proper backpackers, then we rushed to grab our booze, 4 litres of Goon, 24 Beers and 12 ciders between us for the 3 day trip. When we got to the port we met two people that we had previous met in Rainbow beach, one girl and guy from up North, our ... read more

Awesome sleep in a fantastic bed, and so far no spiders or snakes have tried to murder us. But we will remain ever-vigilant. We landed at Proserpine Airport where holy balls it is insanely hot (hottest weather we've had thus far). We met up with Ceanna Bawtinheimer and Ian St. Pierre, our two friends who were traveling through Fiji then Cairns before hooking up with us. After a joyous reunion, we piled into the car to drive to Airlie Beach, a tiny resort town that is the gateway to the Whitsunday Islands (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Whitsunday_Islands). The Whitsundays are always on the Top 5 List for things to do when you get to Australia, so we plan on hitting those up tomorrow. We learned it is not wise to go into the water without a stinger suit as it ... read more

We had a bit of a lie in today and got up around 8ish. We drove into Airlie and went to the beach for a look. Then we went shopping for our lunch. After that we drove back to the beach and walked along it to the Airline beach lagoon which is an artificial beach resort. We walked back through the town and had a look around the shops.we then went back to the campsite to cook our lunch. We booked our Whitsunday island tour for tomorrow, woohoo! So we're having a cheap day today to balance it out haha.... read more

We left Yeppoon around 9am with the intention of driving to Mackay and staying there for 1 night. There were loads of roadworks on the way which added at least an extra 30 minutes to our trip. By the time we got to Mackay we'd been driving for almost 5 hours. We looked at a camp site but it was more expensive than we thought so we decided not to stay. There's not much to do in Mackay, so we stopped for lunch at Red Rooster and drove the extra 2 hours to Airlie Beach, where we'll now stay for 3 nights rather than 2. We saw quite a few bush fires on the way, but not a lot else! We drove along the Bruce Highway to get here. We've been driving on it since before ... read more

Well we have now been to the world famous toad race on Magnetic Island - I know you are probably saying world famous? That is what I thought but what a fun night we had. They auction off 8 toads and place them in a clear container and there is a large circle on the floor. Unlike the horse racing in Ascot, Dubai etc where the horse that passes the line first by a nose wins the race. In the world famous toad races it is the first toad whose bum is over the line that wins. There are 3 races and I managed to get a toad in the first race and he/she was called Kentucky Sue and it cost me $55 which seems a lot but I thought I was onto a winner and ... read more
