Airlie beach was my next stop up the East Coast and it's a lively little town, with pretty views and a nice lagoon to relax by. I travelled there with Lydia, from Frasers, and we met up with a few of her friends and drove to some nearby waterfalls that you can swim in, which was cool. But the highlight of Airlie Beach and I guess the reason why everyone goes there is for sailing the Whitsundays. I went on a 2 day trip on a little sailing boat called Waltzing Matilda; with 3 crew and 13 passengers. For a change i was the only person from the UK, joined by Germany, US, Canada, Holland, Switzerland and Australia. But of course, amazingly, everyone spoke English. I had never been on a sailing boat before and it ... read more

Zu allem ... read more

Airlie beach - Rain, Roadworks and Rubbish kitchens Airlie beach is the gateway to Whitsundays Islands, and a popular stop for backpackers. The rain, roadworks and rubbish kitchen in the hostel were made up by our favourite café, where we found Nemo amd Dory happily swimming along together. The lagoon would have been another highlight if the heavens hadn't decided to open everytime we sat down. - I'm so over hostels After being rudely awoken at 6.30am by a girl banging the door down after a night out, she proceeded to have sexual relations with an uninvited male, much to the discomfort of the dorm full of people she had just woken up! So, the travels have finally begun! It only took 6 months of working but we're finally there and it feels sooooo good. The first place we went was Airlie Beach. This is a fairly small town on the northern coast of Australia. Theres nothing too special about the town itself but its one of the best places to see the Great Barrier Reef. We considered going all the way up to Cairns but that would have involved either flying there and back or driving for almost 20 hours each way! As the reason we were going up the coast was the reef we decided to stay at Airlie and go on a trip from there. Charlotte had booked the accomodation and it was a permenant tent. I want to make it clear Charlotte booked this based ... read more

Again another day of driving, this time we covered twice the distance! Before hitting the road we had a quick wander down to the beach itself. Mission beach was the first stretch of land hit by the Grade 5 Cyclone Yasi in 2011, but it seems to have recovered well. The trip from Mission beach to Townsville took approximately 3 hours and we arrived around lunchtime. Townsville 'strand' bears a striking resemblance to the esplanade in Cairns! After another 3 hour drive we arrived in Airlie beach, a very popular stop for backpackers and also the gateway to The Whitsundays. At each stop we now have to make the decision between YHA hostels or NOMADS hostels - we've stayed on a number of both, but YHA is winning on service at the moment! Baileys bit: Even ... read more

This was one of the days that we had been looking forward to for a long while. One of the travel agents had tipped us that the boat we were on was pretty good which coming from a travel agent must mean good things. We had a few hours to wait around the night before and the morning of the departure day so went to look around some of the shops. What started out as a time killing activity resulted in us buying a new lens for the camera, one capable of bringing a head into focus at 30m, but we saw it as a life saving tool because it means we don't have to get as close to all the snakes, spiders and koalas anymore! We bought our beers and boarded the boat, which from ... read more

We had 5 days before our Whitsundays adventure so needed to start heading south making our way towards Airlie Beach. We took the Greyhound, driven by a very stereotypical Aussie telling us jokes rather than the health and safety information, and only to wear our seat belts if a policeman got on board which you wouldn't find at home! We landed at Mission Beach a few hours later and had the rest of the day to check it out. We'd gotten a really laid back hostel that suited us down to the ground. It had a swimming pool on site and a big outdoor projector screen just being constructed. Although it was small everyone knows everyone after a few hours and it had a really good atmosphere. Jackaroo is worth a visit and will be a ... read more

The time has come to move on. Our last working day was the 9th of December. Goodbyes were said to our co-workers, some of whom we will miss, others not so much. The following day we rose at dawn and trudged off to the bus station, ready to start our small excursion to Airlie Beach. The trip itself was refreshingly short compared to the 18-hour rides we had been on previously. We hopped off right on the beach, had to walk just 100 meters to our hostel (Beaches Backpackers) and checked in comfortably. Though shared with 8 other people, mostly German, the dorm we were assigned to was quite nice. There was even a balcony. We only paid $17 each/night for it. The building we were in was attached to a larger, outdoor area that contained ... read more

Wednesday - 5 December - Another overnight bus later, I arrived in Airlie Beach. At 7am I checked in with the Whitsundays travel peeps for my sailing tour and then headed to the hostel to dump bags and get a shower. I wandered down to the marina to check out where i should be meeting the Tongarra and stayed to watch the boats for a while before heading back into town to meet Deborah and Shaun for a drink, we're following each other you see!! Thursday - 6 December - Today we begun a full day's sailing on Tongarra, most of the day was spent chatting to the other passengers and listening to the do's and don'ts of the boat. Eventually we had a lovely dinner up on deck and watched the sun set. We played ... read more
