Monday March 6, 2017 A different but beautiful day. After a couple of dreary days, today turned out to be a blockbuster day. Beautiful wheathe with lots of activity. It started this morning with a walking excursion to the most original part of town called "the rocks". This was the first place where prisoners settled in 1788. A place that has been preserved in its original setting not due to government intervention, but a a result of actions of the local people and workers unions to maintain the place as a historic site. Very well done! Lots of explanations and stories on how Sydney, and by the same token all but one of the other major cities inAustralia were founded Difficult to understand that most of the Australian initial inhabitants, apart from the aborigines, were convicts. ... read more

Sunday March 5, 2017 A day without a fixed program. As it states in our itinerary "day at leisure". We started out with the "usual" great buffet breakfast, followed by mass at a small but beautiful church, St Patrick. Interesting to see that mass is read every hour, whereas in many countries this would be impossible due to the lack of priests. After mass we did the full tour of the Opera House and the botanic garden. This garden already exists for over 200 years and as such must have been established some 35 years after the first prisoners were shipped to Australia. All major cities in Australia with the exception of Adelaide, find their origin in the deportation of English prisoners to Australia starting in 1780 appoximately. Later in the day we met a friend ... read more

Saturday March 4 2017 Our first full day in Sydney. Let me give it to you as it is: jetlag is a bitch. We were awake around 3.00 AM, but fortunately we were able to drift off a bit, but around 7.00 AM, that was it. Great breakfast here at the hotel. After breakfast we spent some time in the business lounge where we met a friendly Australian couple that gave us some tips on things to do, amongst them, go and see the Mardi Gras Gay Parade. A major happening here. As it turns out Sydney, after San Francisco has the largest gay community of any city in the world. As you would find for these type of parades, people in favor others against. A major political figure of a Christian Democrat party here is ... read more

Friday March 3, 2017 When you travel from San Francisco to Sydney, tomorrow is 2 days later. Although I have done these trips more than once, but the time differences remain confusing. We are now 16 hours ahead of Miami and 10 ahead of The Netherlands. I make these numbers explicit here to avoid anybody calling us at ungodly hours, not taking into consideration these time difference. And another thing, don't call to our regular telephone number, but if you call us use facetime or whatsapp. Calling to our regular numbers will not make your call more expensive to you, but ourcost will skyrocket due to roaming charges. Writing this note we are installed in a very nice boutique hotel in the centre of Sydney. Climate is nice as far as temperature is concerned (23 C ... read more

For the first time we travelled to Australia via China...Shanghai. Mostly to break up the long flights but also to get a brief feel for the possibility of a more extensive tour in the future. The 15 hour flight was painful but getting a good night's sleep then having a personalized tour of the city made up for it. Then on to Sydney for a 5 week family and friends visit and celebration of Mum's 97th birthday. To break up our long stay in Oz we planned a month long tour of the South Island of New Zealand. The first 2 weeks were shared with rellies Carl and Jody, the second, just the 2 of us. Click on the first photo to open.... read more

Well - The route to Sydney and the conclusion of this adventure. From Alice Springs we head south and overnight in Coober Pedy. This is the centre of Opal Mining and all around is evidence of where prospectors have searched for the opals. There are still active mines there, and the town has a number of opal shops. The temperature is around 39 deg but we stayed at an Underground Motel, sleeping in caves - what a surreal experience. We also visited a kangaroo sanctuary and saw some joeys being bottle fed and had chance to feed some of the older females that were being cared for. The roads are long and straight and at this part of the trip we are lucky if we seem more than a handful of vehicles throughout the day. There ... read more

" The gladdest moment in human life, me thinks, is a departure into unknown lands" - Sir Richard Burton. Any journey anywhere has a starting point and a mode of getting there. For far away lands this invariably involves flying. So.. with a curious mind I "Googled" a bit to try and understand just what this flying thing is all about. Consider this: every single day of the year in 2014 there were 102,465 flights around the globe transporting 3 billion passengers in that year alone. Believe it or not a bunch of people in an organisation by name of "Air Transaction Aviation Group" did the sums and continue to do so. Staggering numbers indeed! So when the Elliott's get boarding passes for Cathay Pacific flight CX 748 to Hong Kong, it is a piddly drop ... read more

" Travel is best measured in friends, rather than miles"- Tim Cahill New Zealand remained our main destination but we had planned to spend a week in Sydney connecting and catching up with family. Sue's entire family live in Sydney so some quality time was spent with brother Rory and his wife Brenda Lynsky and their family comprising of the Smith's and Kelly's and their four beautiful daughters. Rory had spent some time planning for our time with them and we were able to undertake a daily smorgasbord of travel and sightseeing delights. And believe me Sydney is a city to delight anyone! A quick scan on the Internet of the World's most liveable cities throws up some surprises. Vienna, Hong Kong, Istanbul, New York, London....in that order # 1 to # 5. Well,I have been ... read more

Today we had a free day in Sydney. I spent the day taking a wonderful walking tour with a nice couple from New York. We started in a beautiful park seeing some of the unusual plants found here in Australia. We then visited St. Mary’s Catholic Cathedral, begun in 1821 and the largest church in the Southern Hemisphere. We entered to wonderful sounds of a girls choir and string group as they practiced together. Very special sound in this beautiful place. We then visited the Sydney Tower Eye, with a circular viewing platform 1000 feet above the city. It was a beautiful, panoramic view of Sydney. We finally visited Darling Harbor, sitting in a few cafe’s and just taking in the view. A very beautiful place. In the evening we had our final dinner in Australia ... read more

Counting last night, today was a busy day. Last night I travelled to the 2000 Sydney Olympic site to see a performance by “The Boss”, Bruce Springsteen. I have seen him many times, starting with early 1977 at the Fox Theater in St. Louis. Bruce was a skinny kid at the time, Andy was not yet born, and I will never get enough of Bruce. He played over 3 hours non-stop in his high-energy style. Springsteen-Sydney-Super. Today we began with a motor tour of Sydney including many stops for photo opportunities. We had lunch in “The Rocks” neighborhood, took an informational cruise of the Sydney harbor and had a tour of the famous Sydney Opera House. I learned so much I did not know, especially about the development and building of the Opera House. It is ... read more
