8th Feb: We arrived at Sydney airport in the afternoon after a short but turbulent flight from Hobart. There were a couple of highlights on the flight. First, the two blokes sitting behind us were slagging off Tasmania for being backward, I loved their comment as the pilot announced we were flying over Launnie that they were still surprised that it had an airport and that Hobart wasn't much better. They had me in stitches. Second was a child reacting badly to the turbulence. He was shouting, "Mummy, we are going to die!" Not being a fan of flying myself, I hear you kid, he was definitely voicing my own thoughts. We took the metro into the city. That was quick, but expensive $16 for a 16 minute journey, thieves! Our hostel was a short walk ... read more

We spent most of the day traveling from Port Douglas to Cairns, and then flying to Sydney. On the way to the airport, we traveled along the coastal highway and got a spectacular view of the Coral Sea. I have checked into my hotel room in downtown Sydney and am preparing to travel to the Olympic Park, site of the 2000 Olympic Games, and there to see the Boss - Bruce Springsteen in the Qudos Bank Stadium, site of the olympics basketball events. During his Australian Tour he is playing at smaller venues than in the U.S. I am overexcited to see the show. As it will be a late night, I will post pictures later. Tomorrow we have a busy day. Sydney Harbor cruise, tour of the Sydney Opera House. I have posted a picture ... read more

Geo: -33.8671, 151.207Daily Journal - Cruise Feb 6 - 18, 2017I woke up at 3:15 just as we were pulling into Sydney. It was dark. There were many folks up on the top deck. You couldn't really see anything, but it was a good experience. Glenn and I came on back to bed until 7:00am. I really didn't get to sleep again, but Glenn did.We left our stateroom at 8:00am and went down to the Guest Services to get our new key card. We walked out onto Sydney. Beautiful day. Blue skies. You could tell it was going to be a HOT day. We decided to walk towards to Sydney Harbor Bridge. I saw the sign for "Bridge Climb". That is where you pay money to walk across the top of the bridge. That was on ... read more

We arrived in Sydney at noon and checked in at the Grace Hotel. This is a central location and a comfortable, refurbished facility that provided good value. Day one was spent trying to recover from the long flights and we managed to stay up until 9:00 P.M. Experience has taught us over the years to try and integrate as quickly as possible to local time. We visited the Rocks, an area close to the harbour, where there are numerous pubs and restaurants and they have a local market every weekend with various crafts, souvenirs etc. After dinner in Darling Harbour, an area next to the Rocks, we dragged our tails back to the Hotel. Day two in Sydney mostly was spent on the Hop on, Hop off bus. We've found this to be the most effective ... read more

Jan 2017 Sydney Alexandria Dec- Jan Back in Sydney and this time we were in small 1 bedroom apartment with 2 cheeky terriers in Alexandria. We were booked by a young couple who had a parent visiting from Italy and they were off travelling to Central Australia. We arrived on the 22nd and by Xmas day were well settled in so went sight seeing up the coast to Palm Beach. All the way up the coast groups were picnicking and celebrating their day off. We stopped at a few spots that caught our eye to take in the atmosphere of the coast and festivities. From Manly we went for a walk and admired the beauty of the bay before catching a ferry back to Circular Quay. We appreciated the convenience of where we were staying after ... read more

We are done! That's it. Trip done. We were on the road for over 6 months 23 days or 206 days, travelled once around the world, visited 3 continents & 14 countries & over 57 cities and wrote 28 travel blogs (each taking 3-5 hours. You do the math). We were on the steppes of Mongolia, marvelled at the red Square, had beer in Germany, spend time with family in Austria, visited Castro's Cuba while he was still alive, admired the Panama canal, wondered what the fuss is about Costa Rica, stared into an active volcano in Nicaragua, had a quick beach stop in El Salvador, roasted marshmallows on a volcano in Guatemala, saw our first Mayan ruins in Honduras, explored a cave in Belize, ate tacos in Mexico and visited Mickey in Disney World in ... read more

Photo update: I've lost my camera cord somewhere, so none of my photos can be downloaded until I get home this weekend :( The drive back to Queenstown from Dunedin was a piece of cake, especially since we'd already done it. It was too early to check in to our (different) hotel, so we parked in the city center and walked over to the Kiwi Birdlife Park. It turned out to be a little more zoo-like than I'd expected (I was expecting more of a sanctuary style facility like the previous Penguin Place we went to in Dunedin, but oh well). It was still neat, and it was our only opportunity to see the national icon, since Kiwis are nocturnal, and we also saw some other native birds. They also have a breed to release program, ... read more

Christmas and New Year...a time for reflection...not necessarily good cheer. A time for reflection I find. Means different things to many people. In Oz it is when families get together that either get together often...or only on this day. To Denise a joyous time...Christmas lights, making cakes for everyone, gleefully wrapping presents, dreaming of family together and happy, a Christmas kinda gal. Even refused to join me on my first trip to China for 5 weeks away 'cause it would have meant not spending Christmas Day with her family. When your family is close I kinda get it. "I'm the Queen of tangy sauces," she exclaimed today. "The harissa really lifted the mayonnaise and jazzed up the prawns." That far away look...her twinkling smile that always makes me smile too. Yet for me Christmas is different. ... read more

Hi Everyone We finished our house sit in Brisbane and drove for 4 hours stopping at a quirky pub/hotel in a little place called Ulmarra. We had wondered if our room would have a fridge, we didn't get a fridge, we didn't get a bathroom, we had to share, didn't get wifi and later in the evening we didn't even get power! But we did have a good meal, a couple of beers and clean sheets so along with the obligatory thunderstorm it worked out ok. The following day we drove for 7 hours and met our eldest son Matt in Manly. He had landed earlier in Sydney, got a train into the city and then the ferry from circular quay, and Matt being Matt found himself a pub with a view and a pint plus ... read more

After the last travel fiasco coming home from Iceland, we purposely built in a 7 hour layover for this trip to Sydney. Rushing through the airport was a wonderful thing and the 15 hour flight was mostly uneventful, though sleeping in a middle seat is just not that easy. Fun fact: they have Uber here, so when we finally landed in Sydney, we used the familiar app to grab a ride to Dave's apartment in Glebe. We were smart enough not to nap when we got here, and after showering and changing, the three of us headed out together. First stop, lunch at the adorable all vegetarian Badde Manors café, then we headed over to the shopping center to pick up a hair dryer and some hard ciders for the New Year's festivities. The walk to ... read more
