Blog 16 Sydney - March 27, 2018 – Weather forecast: mostly sunny, daytime temperature of 26°C; overnight temperature of 18°C On our last full day in Sydney we decided to visit the Hyde Park Barracks Museum. While that has a very military sound to it the building was actually used to house the inmates after they arrived in Australia. It is a three-story structure that dates back to 1819 and has been recognized by UNESCO as a heritage site. It is a credit to the Australian people that the building has been preserved to illustrate their early history. There is an abundance of written material to read and absorb as you walk through the exhibits. In addition, the curators of the site have created an audio guide that provides supplemental information for specific areas of the ... read more

I could have been Dutch but they didn't want me. The first Europeans to discover Australia but only for accidental visits. Willem Jantz mapped northern Queensland in the Duyfken in 1603 but not welcomed by aborigines and left. Dirk Hartog left a pewter plate on an island off Western Australia in 1616 that he named New Holland. Abel Tasman missed mainland Oz completely in 1642 and hit Tasmania, called it Van Dieman's land and then discovered New Zealand. Took Englishman James Cook in 1770 to recognise New Zealand are islands and sailing up the east coast of Oz to realise he had found the fabled Southern Land. With Cook was Joseph Banks the botanist whose drawings of unique flora and fauna captured English imaginations...Terra Australis as a tourist destination thus born. So the English in 1788 ... read more

Blog 12 Part I: Cairns – Sydney - March 22, 2018 – Weather forecast: Cairns - partly cloudy - daytime temperature of 31°C; overnight temperature of 23°C - 60% of rain; Sydney cloudy and windy – daytime temperature of 22°C; overnight temperature of 19°C – 60% chance of showers overnight Today is the last of our travel days to a new destination for the land tour and fortunately it is not as rushed as some of our earlier departures. We actually got to sleep in as our luggage does not have to be out for the porters until 9:00am and we leave the hotel for the airport at 10:00am. The schedule calls for us to leave Cairns on a two o’clock flight, land in Sydney late afternoon and go directly to dinner before actually checking into ... read more

On approach to the Sydney airport I started to get excited. The final segment of this trip was ready to unfold and I had turned over the itinerary to Dancing Dave and his wife Denise. To keep myself honest, I went back to my email to make sure I had agreed to this. “Glee, trepidation and a thrill of the unknown by having accepted placing myself in your hands. I will view this as a reality show in which unwitting travelers are put through the paces of a modern-day city. Jo and I will compete for the best photos, stories and there will be no losers, only an incredible time on which to look back, smile and/or shudder and think how amazing that was.” Yup, those were the parameters I placed upon this portion ... read more

This is going to be a quick, down and dirty account of this extreme adventure. Well, perhaps it was not so extreme, but "jaunty stroll on the bridge"doesn’t have the same pizazz that would make you want to read this. Am I right? Yeah, I thought I might be, so here we go. The transition from the luxurious Indian Pacific train to the streets of Sydney was harsh. Luggage was offloaded in the middle of the platform, where the luggage cars were. Before pulling into the station, the train had been split in half and my carriage was way at the end of the adjoining platform. It was a hot, sticky day in Sydney and my sights were set on getting to the hotel, resting and getting down to the Bridge. The hotel I ... read more

As important as first impressions are, Sydney certainly knows how to make a good one. We arrived on Australia day and went to celebrate that at the Circular Quay. It was packed with people, there was live music from several artists, and oh.. those fireworks. I've seen firework shows before, but try to beat a firework show where jet skies are racing around the water firing off fireworks with the Sydney opera House on the background and reflections of the fireworks on the water. It was magical. After planning our next adventure (think rainforests, scuba diving and more!), we went to the Home bar: a multi-level nightclub with house, R&B and hiphop in separate rooms. The hostel had arranged a bus to the Home bar and we met a lot of nice people: I really enjoyed ... read more

In Dorothy's adventures up the yellow brick road, OZ is a fantasy land, of course! And as we headed out of the hotel on our first morning in Australia, it all seemed like a 'fantasy', to us. We were off to see the Sydney Harbour Bridge and Sydney Opera House today, two iconic landmarks that we've all seen many times on film and TV, but this time we were going to see them for real! We couldn't quite believe it! But, if we were in a dream world, we were soon woken up with a bang.......by the nightmare that is.......Sydney traffic!! Our first stop today was Sydney Harbour Bridge; not just to see it, I hasten to add.......but to climb it! Yep, you heard me correctly, these four intrepid old timers, were going to scale this ... read more

Having celebrated Christmas early with the community in Melbourne, my celebration on Dec 25, with my brother Greg, was with our friends Sandra and Keith and members of their family. Normally, after Xmas in Sydney, I drive to Shellharbour for the annual holiday at the beach. This year was different due to the early start of the Sabbatical program. This year, both before and after Xmas, I caught up with Sydney friends and got to know the local train system. Pictured in this blog post are Xmas gift-giving and catch-ups with various friends, among them Moira, Trish and Pauline. There was also Rosemary but, unfortunately, I forgot to get a snap.... read more
