We took the train from Sydney to Melbourne today, and it took most of the day. We set the alarm for 5:30 and had another early-starting day. By 6:00 we were ready to take the luggage down to the lobby and catch a cab to the train station. Since we are still carrying clothing for 5 weeks of different weather, it was an exercise to get everything there, but we persevered and succeeded. The taxi got us to the central station by 6:20 and we pulled the bags inside. There is a luggage check available if you get there done more than 30 minutes before the train left, which we achieved. So the luggage was checked all the way to Melbourne and we got a little breakfast in the train station. We then were able to ... read more

Hello. This is our last full day in Sydney and we scheduled a full-day tour of an area called the Blue Mountains. It turned out to be a very interesting, but very tiring, and we just don’t have the detail ready to publish this evening. We leave town early tomorrow morning so we have to pack everything up and then try to get some sleep tonight. We will update this posting and provide as good a description as possible, but not tonight. When it is ready we will let you know to go back and revisit this blog entry. Thanks.... read more

Hello from Sydney Australia. Last night we heard thunder during the night, but did not notice any rain and saw no problems around town during the day. However we understand that a lot of rain fell in Western Sydney and up in the mountains, but we dodged any weather problems. As far as today went, there were some very slight showers while we were trying to walk around in the mid-afternoon, but that passed quickly. The high temp today was 27 (about 81 in Fahrenheit). The same is expected again tomorrow. We had a tour today (booked through Viator but actually provided by Grayline) which included a pickup from our hotel, but at 7:10 AM. So we set the alarm for 5:45 and dressed quickly. The hotel dining room does not open until 7:00, so David ... read more

Dear followers, The past weekend, I went out for a good taste in a whiskey bar, called the Baxter Inn. They have a wide range of whiskey's presented in a big bookshelf rack. They literately offer the best types of whiskey you can get and an unlimited offer of pretzels to combine with your drinks. This bar is a hidden gem, because it is reachable through a dark alley and it is situated at the back of a building. Then you have to proceed downstairs to a single door. And you are in for this delicious new experience! I don’t know where to start. Sydney is fantastic! I only had two days to get to know this city of about 5,000,000 people, but I tried hard to experience as much as I could, and I liked everything I saw and experienced. When I left the Oosterdam I got a taxi to the Marriott Sydney Harbor at Circular Quay, a perfect location. There are several nice hotels in the area and I highly recommend the area as a base to explore Sydney. I got to the hotel before check in time but they secured my bags and I then checked with the concierge about how to get a good overview of Sydney in two days. He recommended a hop on hop off bus tour which I did. I wanted to use the open top deck ... read more

Well it happened. I came home. I never thought in a million years that my 6 month sabbatical would involve coming back to Sydney. Actually that’s not entirely true – it was in the back of my mind when planning my trip that a benefit of Asia was its closeness to home in fact anything went wrong. More than that, I had a recurring dream throughout my time away that I came home early. Each time, the feeling was the same – failure. My fantasy of going overseas and having the time of my life had turned out to be just that. After all, isn’t it easy to have the time of your life when you’re away? Isn’t that how it works? My friend in Hanoi told me her German friend couldn’t stop talking about how ... read more

Thursday 23rd January 2014. Botanical Gardens, Hyde Park Barracks & Susannah Place Museums. Sydney, NSW, Australia Another long blog (and a long day!)- We caught the 431 into the city where we jumped off at the Botanical Gardens. We had done the lower end of the gardens a few days ago when we visited Government House. Just inside the main gate were two ladies manning (or should we say womanning) an information desk. They provided us with a map and made their personal recommendations which were the Fernery, and the Rose Garden and Herb Gardens. The weather was absolutely gorgeous. We followed the path along until we came to a fork where we went left to the Fernery. The Fernery is located within the nursery area of the Royal Botanic Gardens. This area was formerly the ... read more

Hi everyone! I hope you are all looking forward to the start of term and starting classes again? :) Here are a few photos of my time in Sydney so far... I leave for Melbourne on the 11th January, driving via Canberra (the capital) where I will be staying the night before finishing the drive to arrive in Melbourne on the 12th - thankfully they drive on the same side of the road as we do! I went to see 'La Boheme' at the Sydney Opera House yesterday evening, it was quite something! Hoping to catch the Australian Ballet Company in Melbourne. I hope you enjoy the photos... I have explained what they are and where they are on the actual photo. Lots of love, Miss Jo xx... read more

Hello from Sydney! I have arrived safely, after what was a very long journey here. Phew! I am still struggling with jet lag at the moment - waking up at 4.30am, which is slightly crazy. However, hopefully within a couple of days I will have adjusted to Aussie time (11 hours ahead of UK time) and ready to take it all in. Sydney is absolutely beautiful and the weather is lovely (I know you all would rather not hear that!). I am staying within walking distance of the harbour and the Sydney Opera House (which is very impressive). I am planning to update my blog with pictures for you all to see on New Year's day so 'watch this space'! I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas with family and friends :) Lots of love, ... read more

Well we touched down in Sydney early this morning. Previously I decided the best thing to do was to book into a hotel at the airport thinking they would let us check in early. Well number one plan down the pan as they say we cannot check in until 2pm. This is not good as we feel like shit and it is only 7am. So bags left at reception and off into Sydney we go. I have decided (yes you are probably saying what have you decided oh wise one, ha ha) that as we are hiring a car for approximately 4 weeks and would need a sat nav to help negotiate Oz it would be cheaper to buy one then hiring one at $17 a day - so off on a mission we go. In ... read more
