The return We negotiated a taxi fare to the train station that has the direct line to the airport. 2 taxis were at the end of our alley, first man said Y200- then the lady quoted Y100-. They were bonfide taxis, but the metre did not show. That’s OK as for $20- we saved dragging our cases up and down stairs, through the subway, onto 2 lines and generally getting hot and sweaty. Our plane was leaving around 3pm so we had lunch at the weirdest Irish pub ever at Beijing airport. The Lucky Shamrock decked out in purple and red lanterns, food was Ok though. Our China Southern plane was a huge one to Guangzhou, 3 seats, then 4, then 3 across, with an upstairs section. The service was quite good; entertainment screens ... read more

Hi everyone...its blog number 5 time, and this one is all about Sydney! Having flown in from Melbourne, I spent just a couple of days in Sydney before my onward flight, but it was enough to see what I wanted. Arriving in the afternoon, I visited Hyde Park and the Australia Museum where there was a good section on Aborigines, whilst on my full day I visited the rest of the city, including the Queen Victoria Building and the botanical gardens, before making it over to the landmark of the city...Sydney Harbour with the Bridge and Opera House in sight. After viewing them from both afar and from up close, I walked around The Rocks before visiting Darling Harbour, where a Japanese girl dancing with Hula Hoops told the crowd she had come all the way ... read more

This is the 4th time I've written this pigging entry, phone mucking about.. Sydney had been fun. I've surprised myself with how quickly I've got to know the city. I've only looked at a map once and that was just to find out which road greyhound was on. Otherwise I've just bimbled about! Got talking to one of the guys from my room last night, Mark. He said he didn't talk to me initially as he thought I was Italian and didn't speak any English!! Must be my Italian colouring.. He invited me out to the foam party at scary canary, but due to the foot being unable to get wet, let alone foamy, I politely declined. Also it was 11pm and I was still sulking in my pj's.. He asked me what had bought me ... read more

Well, the last couple of days have been pretty uneventful... Yesterday I was woken by 6 tonnes worth of glass bottles being thrown into the recycle bin at half 6 in the morning, followed by two girls getting up to leave the room and making loads of noise. Not used to the whole communal living thing yet! Decided to get up at about 8 to go to the harbour. Sat in the sun for a while reading my book (the shining, can't put it down at the mo). Then went whale watching in the afternoon. Saw about 10 humpback whales and a few dolphins. Was amazing!! Got back, walked round the botanical gardens again. So many runners. There is a load of steps, called the fleet steps (Queenie landed in Oz there, quite famous..) and I ... read more

Well getting the second flight went much more smoothly. There was also nobody sat near me. Attempted a lay down sleep with four seats, five pillows and three blankets! Only downsides were that there were two screaming young children near me and a couple who did insist on kissing loudly and generally giving it massive amounts of pda. I had to drink yet more vodka to cope. Two night flights in less than a 24 hour period is a bit odd though, don't know which way is up at the moment (although in Australia, so I'm obviously upside down anyway...). Yet again, Cathay Pacific were the tits. Lovely staff, good food and super strong drinks (no miniatures, just a very generous glugging method). Plus they had usb ports, so could charge my phone ready for landing. ... read more

This year we were unable to get travel insurance for Ash, so rather than staying home we decide to hop over the ditch and visit Sydney for a long weekend and also celebrate Steve's 50th birthday at the same time. We left Auckland on Friday morning at 8:00am flying Virgin Australia with only carry on luggage (the ONLY way to travel) and were sitting in our room at the Hyde Park Inn by 10:30am having a cuppa. Brilliant! It was an absolutely stunning day weather wise so we make the most of it and walked thru Hyde Park, down thru the Botanical gardens and along the beautiful waterfront as far as "Mrs Macquaries chair". Got some brilliant photos! Then it was more walking back to Circular Quay via the Opera House and up to the Harbour ... read more

Mark and I were getting the same flight time over to Sydney but on different aeroplanes so we left each other at Melbourne and reunited at Sydney airport. My flight was horrible, turbulent and what felt like the longest 90minutes of my life. I was so happy to land. According to Mark his flight was one of the best he has ever had! Who said budget airlines were pants ey? So we landed on time and met at the airport and planned to head into the city together. Mark knew some of Sydney so he said he would help me find where I was supposed to be going. I had arranged to meet my sister’s friend Jemma who very kindly offered to look after me for a while. My phone battery had died and I needed ... read more

Day 1: Circular Quay and Sydney Opera House After a long night flight, we arrived in Sydney, Australia (though it was 1 pm in the afternoon). After we got through customs, we took a taxi to Hyde Park Inn which is conveniently located across the street from Museum Cityrail station. Our room fit all four of us and also had a kitchen which was good because we ate breakfast in our room every day. (This helped us save money because food in Australia was expensive!) The hotel overlooked Hyde Park. After we got unpacked, we went to Museum Station, the station looked like the New York or London subway. It was older and had a nice high ceiling. The trains were commuter trains and had two levels plus they had conductor that blew a whistle. I ... read more

Sun in Sydney! The Marriott here in the city is so close to the opera house and the harbour bridge- both of which we walked to on our first night here. Yesterday, Friday, we walked all over the city again...as our normal for a new city! Our trek took us to the Rocks neighborhood, the opera house, the botanical gardens, Wooloomooloo bay, Hyde park and then back down Pitt st to our hotel - busy morning! After a quick lunch at the st George st markets, we headed to Darling harbour to get the wildlife world to go pet a koala - which I did :). Her fur was really quite thick and was not as soft as I thought. We decided to take advantage of the beautiful night wet that'd dinner on the warf - ... read more
