Our third and final day in Sydney dawned with sunshine streaming everywhere. We had to get into town earlier today because we planned to go on the "free" walking tour. We didn't know what to expect as the one in Cape Town hadn't been very good. We loved Sydney's though. Our guide, Leah, was so passionate about her home city and she showed us so many architectural gems and gave the human interest story of the city. We started in Hyde Park, this time at the grand Cathedral of St Margaret. From here we wandered past the Library of New South Wales, the old mint and the Rum Hospital. The story of this medical facility was fascinating. It was built to replace a bad clinic by some scurrilous rum importers in exchange for a monopoly on ... read more

Sydney actually starts about 40km from the centre and has sprawled out, consuming everything it reached. The traffic was very heavy but flowed well and we soon reached our campsite. We hadn't planned to check in as we were far too early but, as we couldn't find parking, we tried our luck and could drive straight in. The Lane Cove National Park Camp Site was a beautiful place with great facilities. We didn't have time to appreciate them at that moment though as we were keen to get to into the city for 11am. We arrived in a wet Sydney and went straight to the Anzac Memorial. This is a grand, blocky marble-fronted building in the middle of Hyde Park. Inside is a circular chamber with a bronze statue of a dead Spartan Warrior, representing the ... read more

Me voila arrivee enfin a Sydney, ville incontournable de l'Australie. Je me suis enfin cru a Sydney !

I've been asked by a number of people to do a little blog. To be fair, the number was one (it was my mom) but here goes anyway: We've been in Australia for a month now. I'd never been before and the preconceived idea I had of Australia is pretty much what I've experienced as reality so far. Although they don't sell fosters, put shrimps on barbies and I'm yet to meet an Australian lady named Sheila. The first week we spent in Sydney central which is an amazing city. It's got the skyline of New York, greenery and gardens of Singapore, all surrounded by probably the most famous harbour in the world. Buildings are unusual, trains are double decker and taxis are boats. After Sydney we moved to Bondi and stayed in a great hostel ... read more

After spending eight amazing weeks in Sydney, Australia I am leaving the country to start my big "Banana Pancake Trail" expedition. I traveled to Australia through an American internship abroad organization called Global Experiences who set me up with an internship at Cardinal Spin, a local Public Relations and Events Management firm. About 40 other interns and myself lived in the suburb Annandale, a short bus ride away from the Central Business District, and worked in numerous fields all over the city and surrounding suburbs. The experience was incredible, to say the least. I truly fell in love with Sydney and met so many incredible people along the way. With a heavy heart I'm leaving this beautiful country and moving on to my first real backpacking expedition! A friend and I will start our adventure in ... read more

Dear followers, The internship is finished! I've really enjoyed my time with the colleagues, this internship was an extraordinary experience, Australia is an awesome experience! During this time I could always count on them, they tried to make my stay even more enjoyable. We had several fun moments, drinks, cake and I've seen the Uni's, played squash, had interesting chats and even went to a BBQ. It's awesome being part of such an amazing team! Therefore I'm sharing the pictures of the last day at alpha dot net Australia. Thank you for these moments! As part of this week I've also had my final presentation, I was quite nervous, but it felt alright ! In the weekend a friend in the hostel and I planned a no limit night out, we had a delicious lunch at ... read more

This morning we walked through Hyde Park via the War Memorial to our first stop for the day at the Wildlife Photographer of the Year exhibition at the Australian Museum on the corner of College Street and William Street right opposite St Mary's Cathedral. Bonus, our Museum Victoria membership allowed us to enter for free ... once we had showed ID proving that we are residents of Victoria. Apparently their annual membership here is more expensive so they had a problem with Sydney residents becoming Museum Victoria members so that they could visit the Australian Museum in Sydney for free. How cheeky is that?! The exhibition was incredibly inspiring. You have to admire people who plan for months, years even, in order to take a particular photograph, often in adverse conditions. For example, I think that ... read more

On the first day of our extra long weekend we were up at our usual time to have breakfast and walk the dogs before dropping them off at Granite Hills Boarding Kennels down at Tynong. Our friends who live at Maryknoll recommended these kennels highly so we hope that our spoiled twosome, who are accustomed to having 'run of house', will cope with being housed like dogs for the weekend! With the dogs all organised we returned home to finalise our packing and head to the airport. We allowed plenty of time for contingencies (just yesterday morning traffic on the Monash Freeway was thrown into chaos by a truck driver driving along the freeway the wrong way) and arrived at Tullamarine way ahead of our flight time. Not to worry, that's what Qantas Club is for! ... read more

Landed at 9AM at Sydney International airport. Due to my traveling I have a lot of experience with Aussie accents so I felt right at home once I landed. Airasia was not a great flight but far from the worse I have been on so I will consider them for future travels. Immigration check was required for people not from Britain, USA or New Zealand. I had paid for my E Visa before I left Canada so I went to the line for people who had the E Visa. I presented my Passport which had been electronically connected to the E Visa. After a few questions I was advised I would be subjected to secondary checks. This has happened a few times when traveling and oddly enough most often when I cross back into Canada on ... read more

Today I would start out in Phnom Penh and by the end of the day I would be in Australia. I left the hostel in the morning to look for some breakfast place. Specifically I was looking for a place that served Durian. Durian is a large spiky fruit with a very sweet, almost custard like seed inside. It is native to South east asia and is known as the King of Fruits. Part of the reason is because the size of the spike fruit and the very strong smell it gives off. It is one of my favourite foods and I wanted to eat it at the source. I tried to politely decline the numerous tuk tuk drivers I past along the way. After wandering around for awhile I settled at a place that looked ... read more
