We got up early, had a quick breakfast and drove of to Canberra. The Kings Highway took us up steep mountainsides with some hairpin curves and the landscape changed as we ascended and became more serene. We came to Canberra around twelve o clock but could check in directly and then headed directly down town. We started at the Questacon, a hands on science museum, and then walked up to the parliament houses. Very different designs but both are nice. After that we went to see the Australian War Memorial but we arrived only half an hour before they closed so we only looked at the grave of the Unknown Soldier. The closing ceremony with the lone piper was very moving. As we were looking for a place to eat Nils noticed that his mobile phone ... read more

We’ve now left Melbourne, heading east into Gippsland. It was named by Strzelecki in 1840 after Governor Gipps of NSW. (Bet the Victorians hate that.) It has a comparatively high rainfall and has lots of dairy, sheep and beef. It was originally thickly forested and while they have milled a lot of it, there are some substantial tracts of forest still. There’s quite a lot of new planting, too. The country is gently rolling, so quite familiar. The farms look quite prosperous with good buildings and new tractors. They had some gold, but have dug all that up and sold it. There are still huge deposits of brown coal, soon to be subject to the new carbon tax, but used extensively for power generation. See our Tasmanian blog about zero carbon tax on inter-state power exports ... read more

I have had this little voice in my head very recently “Have you written a blog yet?” Actually I realised it was not a voice in my head, it was Andy! Ok, so I have been a little slack in a long while, but it seems that I don’t have too much of an excuse at the moment as I find myself with some spare time on my hands. I took the momentous decision to give up my job, it came to a point that the work life balance was no longer in existence, the balance was too heavy on the work side and it was affecting my health. A brave move but it was the best thing and the right thing to do. So, I have been spending my new found time catching up on ... read more

29th May 2012 Well we survived the night unscathed, we quickly hitched up and headed up the road towards Batemans Bay, and then turned off towards Canberra, the drive was very hilly and windy, great if you were on a motorbike or in a sports car but not when your towing a 3 tonne caravan. The forest was pretty and some great views got a few photos and did some video but there were bloody trees in the way, but I guess that’s what u get when you’re in a forest! Arrived in Canberra with no dramas the average IQ of Canberra rose immediately. We set up camp in the showgrounds where there were amenities electricity and water. Needless to say Mandy was a happy camper. We planned the weeks activities, pumped up the heater and ... read more

Big Love. Hi Bloggers, we must apologise for the lack of activity on Kangaroojacks blog, but time has just run away with us, so being mindfully aware of this I thought I would do a roundup of what has been happening since our last blog at Easter. This in not going to be produced in date order, I will just type this from the hip as it comes in to my mind. This weekend we have been to our favourite farm “Woodstock” near Nangus to see Helen and Robert, we arrived at about 5.10 and parked the truck adjacent to a refrigerated trailer as I remember that they were killing some animals and they were most probably hanging in the reefer unit. We walked in to the homestead and found nobody home, so we clicked the ... read more

Almost time to leave. Bags are packed to overflowing with our first stop Dubai. Left the cold of an early Canberra winter and arrived in Dubai to 34 degrees at 5 am. After a slow immigration process we were taken to our hotel and although we couldn't checkin were given access to the showers in the fitness room and a lovely cup of hot tea. Felt human again. To our delight our room was ready at about 8:45 . After a short snooze and a trip to the supermarket to pick up some lunch we were ready for our afternoon city tour.... read more

Yo! As I have directed some lucky people here, I thought there better be something for them to find on this "blog" while I'm travelling to my first destination. As I am lacking other content, I will instead go through my itinerary as it currently stands: China: Beijing and more (different) Great Wall, before getting on the train to... Mongolia: Ger camp-ing and Ulaan Baatar, then train to... Russia: Siberia (Ulan Ude, Lake Baikal), train, Kungur, train, Moscow, train, St Petersburg. (For those of you playing along at home, all that train adds up to the trans-Siberian railway). Then, Hungary, Serbia, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Montenegro, Croatia. By then it will be European summer. I imagine summer on the Dalmatian coast will be horrible. To help cope with that pain, and fill in the time until a ... read more

After an 8 hour bus journey we arrived in Canberra at 4am! The hostel told us they didn't have any beds for us and I was about to freak out when they discovered they did have our booking and they were infact beds for us!! Phew!!! So went straight to bed....as it was 4am and very tired!!!! The YHA hostel here is sooo nice its like a hotel, its such a shame we are only staying two nights! But there isn't really anything here to warrant staying any longer. We went for a walk around Canberra on Saturday and saw the new Parliament House. There's a lot of nice gardens and a lake which we walked around but mostly the city is full of government buildings and museums which we didn't fancy going to. We went ... read more
