After over a week in Sydney, we got back on the road heading south/southeast on our way to complete the circuit started over 7 weeks ago. Ending up where we started, Melbourne, was a great way to end the Australian portion of this epic voyage. After all is said and done, we have to say that Melbourne was our favourite "big" city in Australia. We were also in Adelaide, Brisbane, Sydney, and Canberra (as well as Alice Springs, Cairns, and Mackay along the way). While all of them have their unique charms and features, Melbourne really has it all - the skyline, the river, the nightlife, the shopping, the restaurants, the transit (trams and trains), the cafe scene, the culture, the sophistication, the people, the neighbourhoods - you name it. Great city. On the way back, there ... read more

Well, we are finally home, and have hit the ground running. We have decided that rent is too expensive in Canberra so have settled in to live with Mum until we can find a house to buy. Please all keep your fingers crossed for us - we hope that we have found one and will be putting in an offer during the week :) Now, I need to apologise, as there were two quite special occasions on our traveling adventure that I ommitted to include in the travel blogs... Llandudno, Wales and Antwerp, Belgium. It was just after we had left Ali and Jan in Stratford upon Avon that Joel and I continued on our road trip up to the beach town of Llandudno in north Wales. It was beautiful, the sun had decided to come ... read more

Days to Citizenship +7 Well I will give you an update on our citizenship first of all, my documents have been submitted and I have heard no response, and Caroline has her documents being submitted on 29th, I have made sure that they are all in order and just wait for them to be put in the mail. One of my colleague I sit next to who has come over on temporary secondment, from the UK, and has embraced his time in Australia, Martin and his family have come over for 8 months or so and is due back to the UK, in April. Martin and his family have, have come over and have done some of the usual Australian things and he has travelled a fair bit the company. Caroline and myself took him “Under ... read more

So. We're about to go abroad. Tomorrow, precisely. We're headed off first to Japan, then to Hong Kong and Macau, then India. Just a short non-entry to kick things off - we're looking forward to using this blog as a way to keep in touch (you can talk back as well!) and keep everyone updated on how and where we're travelling. Sometimes I'll post, sometimes Tess will. Y' know, keeping it real and all that. Next post... Tokyo? PS. Tess' only real contribution at this point is to say "Dad, could you please replace the washer in the downstairs bathroom sink while we're away? :) :) I keep forgetting to ask! :) Thank yooou!" Uh-huh, always go out on a high... HAI!... read more

Days to Citizenship application 17 About a week ago, we had a happy e-mail from our friends Jan and Ted in Sydney, the last time we saw them was the day we picked up our new cruiser in Parramatta and they kindly let us stay at their house. Well they told us that they are coming to Canberra on “Official Table Tennis business” and they wanted to catch up with us. When we got back from our Winching course in the Brindabella’s we finally managed to catch up with Jan and Ted on the mobile and arranged to meet them on Tuesday at the Eastlake club, which is just around the corner from where they were staying and just around the corner from where we both work. We were really excited about seeing them as ... read more

Day 1095 Days to Citizenship Application 5 We drove out of the underground Car park this morning, and exactly 3 years ago today, we had left the UK and not in our wildest dreams would we have thought we would be living in Canberra, the Capital City of Australia. The weather to day was a sunny 27 Degree’s and we were off to work, we were talking about it on our Drive in and Caroline thought we would be living in Brisbane and going to work on the “Kitty Kat” well the City Cat, which is a high speed ferry in to the CBD (Central Business District) Has it been what we were looking for, well I honestly don’t think we even knew what we were looking for, but just needed an adventure, so have we ... read more

“Your husband does realize, doesn’t he, how very dangerous they can be?” “He does, but unfortunately he never seems to care about such things.” These statements, reported to me after-the-fact, culminated a conversation between an Australian gentleman and my wife as they watched me approach and photograph an adult emu at Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve in southeastern Australia. The concerned Aussie finally turned away with a shake of his head likely thinking that the world had too many Yanks anyway, so the loss of one wouldn’t really do it any harm. It is actually correct that, if upset, emus can, with relative ease, eviscerate a human using their long claws/nails. However, during our six years of living and working in Australia, we found them to be more pest than threat. As when one strolled brazenly up to ... read more

Wednesday 26th October started very cloudy but at least it wasn’t raining. We had an evening engagement with Caroline and Andy of Kangaroojack fame to look forward to but the rest of the day was so far un-scheduled. We strolled into Yass dressed in our anoraks – not because it looked like rain but because it was so cold! Yass is a nice town so it was a pleasant stroll and it gave me the chance to buy a few bits and pieces. We bought a national newspaper with a splendid picture on the front of the Queen receiving flowers and gifts at The War Memorial yesterday. Frustratingly, as with the many TV news reports we’ve watched, we must have been “in shot” but we couldn’t make ourselves out. It would have been great to be ... read more
