We packed up and caught a boat at 10am to Belize City to reboard our Tucan bus for the trip to Bacalar, Mexico. Crossing the border into Mexico was a bit more involved than usual. It cost $37.50 BZ ($17.25US) each to leave Belize and nothing to enter Mexico. We had to show our own passports, fill out declarations forms, and carry all our luggage across for the entry into Mexico. Our hotel, Hotel Laguna, was only 30 or 40 minutes from the border and just outside Bacalar, right on the lake. The hotel is really cool and should be rated higher than the 2 or 3 stars, but apparently lacks some of the upkeep requirements such as paint, etc. We got a nice room with a balcony overlooking the lake, nicely tiled bath, but ... read more

On Wednesday, June 27, we powered out of Bodega Bay at 5am. We passed the base station of our four new friends, United, States, Coast and Guard, and continued out into the sea, where we met the winds and the waves we had anticipated: 20 knots of wind on the nose and 4-6 feet swells. It’s good that we ate early, because it was tough going. Still, we were prepared for that because that’s what had been forecasted. What wasn’t in the forecast, and continued to not be in the buoy reports, was the 40-knot winds that kicked over the bow from about noon to four in the afternoon. This was extremely hard to get through. The swell wasn’t as bad as it had been on The Night Of The Coast Guard (we were getting ... read more

Day 1 of TravelingFive days after the end of school and my summer travels have finally begun. I've been given the opportunity to travel to Mexico and Canada through the Fulbright-Hayes Summer Program. The seminar is entitled "Getting to Know America's Neighbors: Identity, Community, and Environment in Mexico and Canada." Along with 15 other teachers from around the U.S., I will be studying the creation of cultural identity and environmentalism in each country. We will also be talking about the identity of North America as a whole. (Read www.comexus.org.mx/Summer/project.php?id=6 for a full description.) Upon my return I will need to implement a project in my classroom and school. This blog is the first step of my project. I would love to share my experience a little at a time with each of you. So here it ... read more

We arrived in Ketchikan at 7:00 A.M. and had an early breakfast to be ready to disembark for our tour of Ketchikan. Ketchikan snakes for several miles along the southwestern shore of Revillagifedo Island, facing Tongass Narrows. With 14,000 inhabitants, this fourth largest community is known as"Alaska's First City" because it is the first town travelers reach when ferrying north. After having our pictures taken at the gangway with bald eagle and Ketchikan's fisherlady we boarded our tour bus. Driving through the city we saw the Creek Street Historic District (notorious red-light district from1902 to 1954), the salmon cannery, and typical homes of the loggers and other business people of Ketchikan. Then we went to Totem Bight State Park and our guide showed us many totem poles and the reconstructed Clan House. Each totem pole ... read more

Vegas was cool, well no in fact to change that to Vegas was very hot, but a cool place to visit all the same. During the fours days we were there it rarely dropped below 100, even in the middle of the night. It's too hot to sit out in, you can maybe do int early in the morning for a bit but by about 11 o'clock, forget it. Therefore most of the time we were inside with the comfort of air conditioning. First night we had arrived late so we just stayed in the travel lodge, not the ideal choice, but by this time I was really tired and just wanted a place to sleep for the night. Refreshed the next morning we made our way down to the library (so far really living ... read more

Cripple Creek Route Cindy Dietz I participated in the Ridin’ the Rockies HOG Touring Rally that was held June 25-28, 2007. The plan for the week was to spend some time with my cousins before the rally started then take the long way home after the rally. I rode my 2005 833 Sportster from KC to the rally and back home. The following is a ride report of the ride. It is divided in to parts because of the pictures. Wednesday 27 June 07 Slept in until 8 am this morning, hey I’m on vacation! One of the neat things (few neat things) about this Days Inn is the carports. They have a bunch of car ports that are first come, first serve for the hotel guests. I managed to get a car port every night ... read more

Camp Name- Thank God (Gabro Lake)/ # Miles-8/Portages-3 We woke up this morning to the same damp that had chased us into the woods the night before. Tents, trees and tp was cold and wet. Looking out over the river a mist was rising from the water. It was as if the river was showing us she was not imperable to the rain either. Our cooks are treating us to a fire and warm biscuits this morning. Ah finally we are at our mobile home as Camilla calls it. Lord knows it took us long enough to get here. As I am sitting on these quiet rocks I can hear the sound of you all laughing, teasing, with each other and some trying to comfort the cold and recently wet (Kim). I enjoy this time ... read more

This is probably the most scenic part of Yellowstone. We stopped at Tower Junction and Tower Falls. Onward to Canyon Village Visitor Centre and Inspiration Point via Dunraven Pass, where there are hordes of people with huge telephoto lenses and binoculars. This is a good start to the Yellowstone Grand Canyon. We got a good photo of an eagle and its chick on top a rock pinnacle. It was very crowded at the car parks but was much quieter if walking just a few yards on the numerous tracks provided. It’s very picturesque, including the Lower and Upper Falls. Then it’s Sulphur Cauldron, which you wouldn’t want to fall into! We move south to the West Thumb Geyser Basin and some interesting geysers and pools. Before arriving we come across quite a few herds of Buffalo ... read more

Yay! We left Cedar Falls this morning and headed to Minneapolis with my dear friend and co-worker, Doris as chauffeur. We checked in for our flight to Washington DC, switched our seat assignments from the exit row (since Owen is not yet 15!), grabbed a sandwich from Caribou Coffee, and got on the plane. Then we sat for about an hour while a faulty jumpseat was repaired, and Air Traffic Control contemplated the bad weather in the DC area. We were kept up-to-date on things, though, which was good. After an uneventful flight, we arrived in DC 40 minutes late, grabbed our checked bag of baby clothes for Conor, and met Tim (our brother-in-law) out front. We spent the evening rocking and holding baby Conor--he was having a rough day! We are all packed up ... read more
