Camp Name- Thank God (Gabro Lake)/ # Miles-8/Portages-3 We woke up this morning to the same damp that had chased us into the woods the night before. Tents, trees and tp was cold and wet. Looking out over the river a mist was rising from the water. It was as if the river was showing us she was not imperable to the rain either. Our cooks are treating us to a fire and warm biscuits this morning. Ah finally we are at our mobile home as Camilla calls it. Lord knows it took us long enough to get here. As I am sitting on these quiet rocks I can hear the sound of you all laughing, teasing, with each other and some trying to comfort the cold and recently wet (Kim). I enjoy this time ... read more

This is probably the most scenic part of Yellowstone. We stopped at Tower Junction and Tower Falls. Onward to Canyon Village Visitor Centre and Inspiration Point via Dunraven Pass, where there are hordes of people with huge telephoto lenses and binoculars. This is a good start to the Yellowstone Grand Canyon. We got a good photo of an eagle and its chick on top a rock pinnacle. It was very crowded at the car parks but was much quieter if walking just a few yards on the numerous tracks provided. It’s very picturesque, including the Lower and Upper Falls. Then it’s Sulphur Cauldron, which you wouldn’t want to fall into! We move south to the West Thumb Geyser Basin and some interesting geysers and pools. Before arriving we come across quite a few herds of Buffalo ... read more

Yay! We left Cedar Falls this morning and headed to Minneapolis with my dear friend and co-worker, Doris as chauffeur. We checked in for our flight to Washington DC, switched our seat assignments from the exit row (since Owen is not yet 15!), grabbed a sandwich from Caribou Coffee, and got on the plane. Then we sat for about an hour while a faulty jumpseat was repaired, and Air Traffic Control contemplated the bad weather in the DC area. We were kept up-to-date on things, though, which was good. After an uneventful flight, we arrived in DC 40 minutes late, grabbed our checked bag of baby clothes for Conor, and met Tim (our brother-in-law) out front. We spent the evening rocking and holding baby Conor--he was having a rough day! We are all packed up ... read more

Spokane is a beautiful city located along the Spokane River. There are so many golf courses here it is difficult to decide which ones to play. Spokane is touted to have some of the best golfing in the greater Inland Northwest, plus the great outdoors, fresh air, quiet ambiance, and views of the nearby snow capped mountains where every hole is a kodak moment ! We played at Chewelah Golf and Country Club as well as Deer Park Golf Club in the Spokane area. The majestic mountains here are covered with gigantic bull pine trees that are over 75 feet tall. They receive very little snow here and the summers are warm in the day and cool in the evening. We parked just off the 9th hole tee box in our motorhome and enjoyed the beautiful ... read more

It's the second day of our vacation and today involved a lot of driving across Wyoming. We drove from Gillette, WY to Jackson, WY. Jackson is a mix of cowboy and tourist town. Everything is done with a Western look to it which makes it unique. Has some great shops and restaurants also unique only to the area. We got into town and settled into our hotel. We then headed off to Bubba's for some great BBQ. It was excellent and we watched my 9 year old nephew devour spare ribs like a rabid dog. We then went and walked a little around downtown Jackson including the city park. Each corner of the city park is made up of an antler arch entry. The antlers were picked up by locals after shedded by area elk and ... read more

Phew, it's hot here in Boston - it's probably around 35 degrees, but it's not dry like in Las Vegas, so you feel it more. Having lived almost nocturnally in Las Vegas, my bodyclock was not exactly properly calibrated. An overnight flight to Boston (I can't sleep on planes) sent it completely haywire. When I arrived at the hostel in Boston at 9am, I decided to have a nap; and then got up at 5pm. A day completely wasted. Of course, I couldn't sleep the following night and the obese, smelly Persian guy in my dorm - who proved the theory that the bigger they come, the louder they snore - didn't exactly help matters. My mood wasn't helped when I discovered my overspending in Vegas meant that I can only spend a paltry US$28 a ... read more

They say no visit to Cape Cod is complete without a visit to one of the islands; Martha's Vineyard or Nantucket. We chose to do Martha's Vineyard on this trip for several reasons: the ferry ride was shorter, there was more to do with young children, and the ferry tickets were cheaper. We left the condo around 7am this morning, drove into Falmouth and parked, then took a bus to the ferry terminal in Wood's Hole. We were a little early getting to the terminal, which is what I planned because I wanted to try out this great little bakery called Pie in the Sky (www.woodshole.com/pie) for breakfast. Pie in the Sky is just up the hill from the ferry terminal. I had read wonderful things online about this little place and it didn't disappoint. They ... read more

Howdy all, As most of you know we are leaving the beautiful northwest shortly and will be traveling through France, Spain and Portugal for the month of July. We won't be making international phone calls home. Sorry moms and dads. In part this is because we've had enough of international calling trying to use our broken French and Spanish at 1 AM to book our lodging. Also, international phone calls are a bit more expensive than this free, modern version of post cards. So we we will be keeping in touch through this blog. Watch for photos and stories and feel free to leave comments/correspondence. Minette and I are traveling by ourselves from June 30 to July 19 in true honeymoon fashion. Later we'll pick up Ann and Zerian in Madrid and do some family ... read more

Long drive today - not sure but I think the longest of the trip at 572 miles, I was right with yesterdays comments about not much to see, but what was weird is the American version of UK motorway service stations or as they call them Rest Stops, all they are is toilets and a drinks machine - if you want feeding you have to stop at a town and there are signs on the Interstates which quite literally say - Food Next Exit and then tell you what food there is, be it Subway, McDonalds, Burger King etc. Anyway as I got near West Yellowstone I could see what looked like a huge cloud coming down from the sky, unfortunately it was a cloud going the other direction and is an example of what can ... read more
