The Sierra Nevada mountain range lies mainly in central California, between the central valley and the Nevada state border. Millions of years ago, granite began forming deep in the ground, and then began to rise due to tectonic movement. Finally glaciers shaped and exposed the granite into the range that exists today. The name of the range comes from a Spanish translation, meaning "Snowy Mountains". Native communities inhabited lower lying areas of the region for thousands of years, and American exploration began in the 1820's but was not fully explored until the 1910's because of how difficult the range was to access. The range spans about 640 km (400 miles) north to south, and 80-130 km across from west to east. The southern part of the range tends to have the highest elevations. Much of the ... read more

Wisconsin Dells, a city in southern Wisconsin, lies on the Wisconsin River in a region of glacier-carved sandstone formations. Its numerous theme parks and entertainment centers include Noah's Ark Water Park, and Mt. Olympus Water and Theme Park. We camped at Mirror Lake State Park, a forested reserve surrounding the namesake lake, is known for nature trails and camping. The leaves were starting to change into beautiful red and orange colors. We took an afternoon and strolled the downtown area, stopping in many of the souvenir shops. Like so many tourist towns there were many t-shirt and fudge shops. We managed to resist the temptation of both. We took a morning boat ride through the Dells. We sat on the top deck and had a spectacular view of the sights! The boat stopped twice, first at ... read more

After Livingston, our next stop was Austin, where very good friends from Lynnwood had moved. We stayed at a wonderful RV resort park in a community just north of Austin named Lakeway, and it turned out to be an excellent and lucky choice because it was very close to our friend’s home and we had an excellent time with them. It certainly is wonderful to reconnect with friends, even though time is always too short. But then, it gives very good reasons to return. As we traveled from Livingston to Austin along lesser traveled highways, we noticed 2 things: There must be some unwritten regulation requiring 5 miles between Dollar General stores, if that much. Churches seem to be intermixed with them. For those who live in the northwest, this makes sense. The foliage and terrain ... read more

I wrote last week about the city, San Francisco, that many of us fell in love with during the 60s. Today, everything is much different, challenging, dangerous, filthy, politically divided, and in many areas, a quagmire. First some facts (from A Piece of Travel) to back me up: The rising cost of living and lack of new housing developments has led to an increase in the number of unhoused people on San Francisco’s streets. url=https://original.newsbreak.com/@b-rose-1684746/3040385423763-san-francisco-s-homeless-crisis-reaches-unprecedented-levels-in-may-2023-prompting-urgent-actionRampant drug use among the unhoused population is commonly blamed for the uptick in city-wide property damage and petty theft. As of 2022, San Francisco has the third-highest rate of homelessness in the nation, after Oakland and Los Angeles. According to the url=https://www.sfchronicle.com/sf/article/s... read more

After the majestic beauty of Mount Equinox, we headed south for a very short hop of about 50 miles into The Berkshires, a highland region, back in Massachusetts. We will be staying at a place called The Vacation Village in the Berkshires, near a small hamlet called Hancock (on the Massachusetts/New York State border and a few miles south of the main town in the area, called Williamstown. Effectively, we will be in the very north-western corner of Massachusetts and about as far as you can get from Boston, whilst still being in the same State. This drive should be a doddle, especially in the beautiful weather, giving us time to explore a couple of places on the way and so we pulled off the freeway, intending to visit the town of Bennington, but when we ... read more

Today we had a leisurely morning. Terry has been having trouble sleeping. Ed has a cold. Karen has had a cold and is having trouble with her ear. I fixed scrambled eggs with peppers, onions, ham, and cheese. We had muffins or bagels, juice and coffee. Following breakfast Ed, Karen, and I drove up to the Von Trapp Family Lodge. We just wanted to look around at the gift shops, see the Highland Cows, and just revisit the place. If you go to the Von Trapps, you are asked to get a day pass for guests. Since we were only going to be there for a short time we didn’t get the pass We got some great pictures particularly of the cows and flowers. We even got to see Christina Von Trapp in the gift shop. ... read more

Dear Blog Readers, So begins our babymoon! Normally we'd try and get away in November (such as Barbados last year!) but brought it forward and decided to jet off to sunny California! Bookings were late but we had a rough idea of where we wanted to head out so let's take you on the journey with us! Firstly, the flight to LA was lovely, getting to experience BA's Club Suite was delightful - a fully flat bed and decent grub soothed the jet lag woes! Once at LA's airport, we found ourselves to the Avis rental car place, which had a queue nearly as long as the security/immigration, and our expected Ford Focus turned out to be a Dodge Charger! Quickly getting used to the automatic gearing and sheer size of the car, we found our ... read more

Greenland It didn’t happen!! It was stormy before, but I had never experienced anything like this!! First they closed the observatory (later we learnt that part of the ceiling had fallen down and it wasn’t safe!!) then a large cabinet fell over in the dining room delaying our dinner. This was apart from the noisy, creaking ship, enormous bangs in the theatre where the waves were hitting, people falling over like packs of cards - one person we had breakfast with had her arm in a sling!!) rain pouring in underneath all the doors despite towels/blankets etc that had been put there!! (Humidifiers were going for about three days after!!) There were leaky cabins that we heard rumours that people had to change cabins and one couple on deck 10 had a metal ceiling tile fall ... read more
