Well, hello, hello. Over the summer, I traveled to New York City. I came up with an easy guide to stay to when traveling here: what to pack: the regulars (i.e. clothes, cell phone, lap top, toiletries) bring a good pair of sneakers, along with dressy shoes if you go out. dont forget a dress and casual jeans and t-shirts to wear every where. what to do: see a broadway, they are amazing! I have seen Phantom of the Opera and Mary Poppins and both were fantastique! I plan to see Legally Blonde, because I had watch the show prior to the new Elle Woods. It looks really, really good and I really, really, really, really want to see it. go shopping! Head to 5th Avenue for expensive and luxurious shopping ares. Louis Vuitton, Chanel, Tiffany ... read more

Okay, so I guess this starts it. I do live in Virginia, but I don't live in Williamsburg. I lvoe going there for the Oktoberfest though, which we are going to this year and I am very excited about it! I love my hometown. We're right near D.C. and it is soooo be-yoo-ti-ful. I am a city girl, if you can't already tell. Shopping, arts, food, culture. I indulge it all through the city. But I plan on going many more places. Well, some planned, some not. I'll just see how far it takes me. I am younger than most people on this website but I'm not going to go off and reveal my age. That's be insane. LOL. The sky right now is pretty gray and rainy, but the light that seeps through the window ... read more

Well here I am, I'm finally in sunny California. My flight was delayed by three hours from London, good ol Robinson luck strikes at the best of times!! My first night was spent in a hotel at LAX airport. It was quite a daunting experience going through arrivals, then figuring out where I needed to go. I was 5,000 miles from home and all alone!!!! now was the time to act independent. That night I went down to the hotel bar and had my first beer of my adventure. In fact i think it turned out to be around six as I started talking to This American lad for ages, he worked in Dubai and had a lot of money, he brought me a few beers which was nice. Well there I was, mixing with Americans ... read more

Day 4... I know this is almost a week late, but I haven't had a whole lot of internet access. I made it to Indiana Saturday, Septemeber 27th around 11pm. I didn't want to end up paying for one last night at a motel so I wanted to make sure I got there Saturday. I started at 730 in the morning. I got up and went to have the Travelodge 'Continental Breakfast' which consisted of bagels and frozen waffles. I grabbed a bagel and headed back to the room to start getting my stuff to go on my last leg of the trip. Bobette and Shelly didn't seem phased at all that they were in the car. It was warmer than their old house and they were happy. Shelly actually started eating daily, at one point ... read more

Just wanted to let everyone know that we arrived back home safely last night. It was an incredibly long flight, and we were so happy when we landed in the US. Right now, we're busy washing all our clothes and climbing gear, and packing for our big move tomorrow. We have thousands of pictures of our trip, and we will post some as soon as we have a chance. ... read more

We had several down days at my Roanoke home with my mother - Helen (91), sister Lynn (63) and sister Leslee (almost 50) who drove down from DC on Friday. A mini family reunion with only DiAnne (65) missing. Bets has adopted my family and my mom is “mom” and she loves it. My mother - Helen, who surprises me every time I see with her energy and strength, is still very active being a homemaker for Lynn and herself. One of her favorite pastimes is bargain hunting groceries as Lynn drives from store to store burning $4 gasoline to save pennies. However there is no way to convince Helen she has not saved big $$. We spent Friday and Saturday here in relax mode. Betty tried to catch up on her energy and I tried ... read more

Keokuk, IA to Rockport, IL 84.6 total miles We left Keokuk around 7am. We went thru our first lock about a mile down river. The first lock was #19. Between lock #19 and lock #20, in Canton, MO was about 21 miles and we cruised about 9 mph. We had to wait a little over an hour and a half for them to bring a huge barge up the short 10 foot lift. Between lock #20 and lock #21, in Quincy, IL was a little over 18 miles and we cruised about 20 mph. Between lock #21 and lock #22, in Hannibal, MO was just under 24 miles and we cruised about 30 mph. In Hannibal, MO we saw the "Mark Twain Paddle Boat". We stayed our first night in Rockport, IL at "Two Rivers Marina". ... read more

We left Roanoke Sunday morning headed for Jackson, Tennessee between Nashville and Memphis. However, things did not turn out as planned. Maybe you heard about a gasoline shortage in several eastern cities due to Ike, Nashville was one such city (we did not hear). When we hit town it was fumes, but there was no gasoline to be found. We pulled into a Holiday Inn Express parking lot after talking with local police who confirmed there was no gasoline in the area. I checked with the motel for room availability, however they did not take DOGS. The KC factor rears its ugly head. Meanwhile Bets is on the phone with AAA, but the response is the feared “we ain’t got none and we don’t know when we’ll git sum”. However AAA offered to tow us up ... read more

What a difference a day makes! Jerry was breathing better this morning so he took to the map and suggested a new route to investigate an area off the expressway on our way to Jerome, Idaho. It was a great ride. Gone were the blind turns, 25 mph speeds, and endless climbs and descents. These were rolling hills (or mountains) with a more normal road that had a yellow center line and other very clear markings. It was like our Wisconsin treks of yester-year where we took this county road, than that one, and oh, let's turn here. We could see shadows of mountains off in the distance on both sides but for today, it seemed our travels would be fast and easy. The further we traveled, the more arid and flat it became. Between driving ... read more

The semester is flying by, luckily pretty much without any hicups. I am taking interesting classes that (yay!) have almost no homework, so I have tons of free time to do random stuff. So far I have been doing adventure trips with the outdoor rec (kayaking and white water rafting), hanging out with friends, going to football games (we wont mention those though) and I published a book of picutures from Zanzibar. Should be getting the final copy in the mail this week, and I am really excited to see how it turned out. I have also been doing lots of reading for fun. Just finished a fabulous book about the environmental history and current urban planning in Washington State. I am living with the same wonderful group of women this year, there are 4 of ... read more
