Suggested Listening for this Entry: Let me attack this three ways. First, for historical context, listen to “The Cheater” by Bob Kuban and the In Men. Second, for a feel of the music heard at this show, find your city’s biggest name wedding/bar mitzvah band and sit through their versions of “We Are Family” and “Celebration". Third, I can’t leave you readers with a bad musical taste in your mouths, so give a listen to the CD Rockin’ Eighty-Eights by St. Louis piano players Johnnie Johnson, Clayton Love and Jimmy Vaughn. Suggested Food and Drink for this Entry: Since we’re back in the Anheuser-Busch fatherland, let’s go with a bottles of Bud Light. For grub, grab something off a hot dog cart in a park. When I was in St. Louis the prior week, I had ... read more

Hi there again! Spent a few wonderful days in San Francisco which I am grateful for because it confirmed what I was hoping - that not all of America is like LA and Vegas. San Francisco is very cute - just as I remember it from the opening credits on Full House. All the little apartments on top of each other and the well known cable cars. I walked all over the CBD and harbour area on the first day which was painful because San Franciso is a myriad of hills, very steep hills. The next day I spent with a girl from Germany riding a bike around town, the waterfront and over the Golden Gate Bridge to a little community call Sausilto. Once again, hills. I was completely exhausted but well worth it. While I ... read more

We had to go into Grand Island to go to the Post Office and to the bank. We like the neat and tidy farms. Their yards all around the barns and outbuildings are clean and there's no junk piled up anywhere, no rusty old tractors, no piles of barbed wire, nothing. It must be their German heritage. They had large lawns. It looked like they just mowed whatever was growing and, voila, a lush, green lawn - and no sprinklers! We also liked the town of Grand Island. It was clean and the people were friendly. There were some signs in town that were in Spanish. We had coffee once in the Blue Moon. HaHa! The owner said that the economy there was all right. They had a meat-packing plant and there were two ethanol ... read more

Sunday night was a total bust! Stephen Cochrane one of my favourite artists was back in town for a 2 night stint at the Wildhorse Saloon. He played Saturday night for an hour but of course I was too busy getting kicked out of the Opry and sometimes you just can't be in two places at once. There was mixed information about his Sunday performance. The wildhorse website said that it was a private event yet Stephen himself said he went on at 8:30 and it was a $6 cover charge. We got to the Wildhorse and it was definitely closed I stuck my head in the gift shop and found out that there was some stuffy very formal looking dinner happening for cracker barrel employees. The sales person said we weren't the first ones who ... read more

Sept 30th Up at 6 to try and get away for 7 , I make it for 7.15 as I knew from the forecast the cussed wind is still blowing from the east but Its not so bad over the first 10 miles. Today is a dilema as there is camping 26 miles out in Superior, after a 1,000ft ascent, thereafter no camping or services till Globe, a further 30 miles with a 2,000ft ascent thrown in. To stop after only 26 miles (after a day off) would be a real cop out, so I decide to go for Globe. The worst part of the days cycling was the second 10 miles , a long gradual ascent towards tthe mountains in the distance battling a fierce headwind, barely doing 6mph. On reaching the mountains I gained ... read more

Had a bit of a sleep in today as we werent planning on travelling to far so enough time to indulge in Kelly and Regis for a while again. Headed out of Winchester on VA-11 and soon crossed the state line and into West Virginia. Funny how you notice certain changes as you cruise along. All of a sudden there Gentlemens clubs everywhere some even next door to each other and some in strange places on the side of the road when there were no houses or township around.Obviously at this time of the morning they were closed so couldnt inspect the inside to see what went on n these places.People do say they do say they do things a bit different in West Virginia. The standard of housing seemed to drop as well. We moved onto WV-51 ... read more

Hey Hey Today we got up approx 9:30 am. Got ready. Had breakfast. Took some pictures with my aunt & uncle. Then Don was pushing me for us to get on the road to start the drive back.... So off to the road we go. Then we drove and drove and drove. Then we had to pass into the state of california and they actually have like a border stop at the state border. How weird is that? He just asked us where we were coming from and let us go, but I've never seen border patrol in between states. Don said they are watching for illegal mexicans since arizona is so close to mexico border... Then we turned off onto I95 only to realize there was no food, gas, or anything on this road. I ... read more

Saturday, September 27, 2008 Listening to the local am radio station this morning; programming is back to the normal schedules. This station is, of course, www.klvi.com, 560 AM from Beaumont, Texas, that I mention often. At 5:00 a.m. on Saturdays there is an outdoor show that is pre programmed. A local host comes on at 6:00 a.m. with the Tradio Show, where people, not those offering services or business ventures, are to call in to find or sell anything they need or have. These things often range from firewood and farm animals to tractor tires, computers, vehicles and refrigerators. I, personally, have never called or bought anything from the program callers but listen nonetheless. I was amazed at the people calling in this early in the morning to offer, free, household and clothing items for those ... read more

Alaska Summary 3 Greetings again from Alaska (via Michigan, via Myrtle Beach SC, via home where I am at this writing ) When I stopped last time, we were in Whittier AK about to board the ship Island Princess. We had boarded about 6 p.m. on Monday August 18th and after locating our stateroom, went to eat. Eating seems to be what cruises are best known for as there are two restaurants that cater to people on board, plus two restaurants that are specialty (which cost extra), two food areas that have pizza, sandwiches, burgers, etc. and one buffet restaurant that was open 24 hours. We ate at the first seating (6 p.m.) and were put with a Mother and Daughter from Winnipeg Canada. The Mother is a retired Professor in Biology and the Daughter is ... read more

City by the Bay: San Francisco Tuesday 30th September 2008 We are in a plane flying at about 34,000 feet towards Honolulu airport, Hawaii. We didn’t leave our hearts in San Francisco (like Tony Bennett in the famous old song) but we did love it! It is a city with a lot of heart and soul and a distinct ambience all of its own. We have been to so many towns over the last month that all look the same, which we called “Anyplace USA”; same shops in the same malls, with the same freeways running through, where once Main Street used to be and thus with the hearts ripped right out of them. San Francisco has everything going for it, great location in a beautiful bay, 19th century “Victorian’ houses in beautiful pastel colours, big ... read more
