Day 92- Monday Yesterday we flew from Colarado to LA where we were met by Connie's sister (No 6!), Cathy and her two lovely daughters, Sophia and Anna. They live south of the airport, about 30 minutes in good traffic, right near the beach ( broadly speaking , Redondo beach) . The girls, like the rest of the family are heavily into sport and , most interestingly what is known here as "Junior Lifeguards" or nippers/ surfclub in Australia. They trained, qualified and did surf patrol during the summer vacation. But they don't seem to have a Sunday morning program of weekly competitions. We had a lovely time driving and walking around the district. Overalll the feel is similar to Sydney. Lots of California bungalows, eucalypts but of course some real mansions with water views. Well, About a week and a half ago, I went around to all the Elementary Schools in my area and asked the Librarians if they had any books that they wanted to donate to the African Library Project. I got about three books on those initial visits and I gave my name and number to all the Librarians so they could call me if they came across any books they thought would be useful to me. I then asked my mom to talk to the Librarian at Lakeside Elementary School, where she works part time, and she came home a couple days later with a stack of books and another stack a few days after that! I also returned to Redwood Middle School (my first visit was the same day as the rest of the schools), ... read more

I'm finally here!! The flights were interesting, but not too bad. On the flight from Sydney to Taipei, there were a lot of kids. One that screamed most of the way and two behind me that kept kicking my seat and fighting. But overall, no dramas. I was glad to finally get off and be able to stand for longer than a couple of miutes! San Francisco was nice, although we missed our reservation at the Stinking Rose for dinner. We ended up going to Pelligrini, a really nice Italian restaurant. Its been good to see the girls again. Both Riley and Jaynin have grown up so much. Jaynin is really cute and follows me around a lot. Unfortunately Riley is at school so I don't get to see her much during the day. Paige seems ... read more

Greetings again: The storms passed, so I'll continue and actually finish, except for some pictures later. Alaska Summary 4 We arrived in the capital city of Juneau the next morning. Still to rain and clouds. Juneau is the only capital city in the U.S. that has no road leading to it. The only way to get to it is by plane or boat. Mike and I had a fishing excursion planned, so we were off early. To make a long story short, everyone caught a salmon but me. I never even touched a pole. Just when it was looking favorable with four poles in the water for me, the time was up and we headed back to shore. It would have been fun to land a fish, but if I went back, I would take ... read more

We awoke to a beautiful dawn with an expansive view over the countryside at the home of Mary and Ron.We had a busy day ahead and they needed to get down to work so we had breakfast and readied ourselves for the road. It had been a memorable stay and Gretchen had atear in her eye as we drove off towards I-66 and our first stop at Manassas. The old town is quaint although it is a shame that they let heavy vehicles down the narrow main street. It was the first time we had walked any distance since our horse riding experience of yesterday and we both still felt like we were walking a bit bandy as if we had spent the whole day on a horse!!Hope this comes right as the day progresses.Perhaps we ... read more

This trip has been forever in the making. I'm honestly surprised to be writing of it as I thought it would never happen. We had originally planned to go last March. Yes, I realize it's almost October, but we had a week off and our brains swam with visions of rainforest camping and montane hikes. And then a huge storm blew through and flooded the campsites while mudslides completely demolished the roads. The trip was post-poned until summer. Summer came and went. The weather was good but the scheldule was not. If I wasn't working Andras was. On my days off he was at the office. Between the two of us we considered it a stroke of good fortune to have one day off together, and when it finally did come around (half-way through August) we ... read more

Crossing back into the U.S. we traveled to Hyde Park, New York located in the Hudson Valley region. We chose this town because it was home to the Culinary Institute of America. The “other CIA” is the training ground for aspiring chefs and is located on a traditional New England style college campus. We had made reservations at 3 of the 5 restaurants with students rotating into all of the positions in each restaurant. Not only was the food and service as good as any 1st class restaurant but it was fun talking to these young chefs about their plans for the future. Many were close to graduating with a 2 year Associates degree and had positions lined up for restaurants from N.Y. to Hawaii. Others wanted to continue for a Bachelors degree with hopes ... read more

Never have I longed more for the feel of my children's arms about my neck. Never have I craved more the comfort of my own home, surrounded by familiar sights, sounds, and smells. Never have I desired more a simple slice of pizza fit for an Italian, a cup of tea fit for an Englishman, and a cheesburger fit for an American. For Adventure and Danger are sweet, And against them we may test our mettle; But the wine by the fireside is sweeter, And knowing one's place. I hope you have enjoyed reading this blog as much as I have enjoyed writing it. May Jehovah God strenghthen your faith, as he has surely strengthened mine during my 13 days of 'Seeing the Good Land."... read more

Hi everyone, the Queen Mary was excellent. After a reasonably short flight (5 hours) we arrived at LAX, flight was ok except for the ignorant oriental types sitting in front of us who put there seats right back and kept blocking our view of the movie. The onboard food was good though, being a domestic flight we had to pay for our beverages though. Our room was ready on arrival, so dumped our bags and proceeded to wander around the ship then straight to the bar for drinks. Room service that night which was good, then off to bed......been a long day. 25/9 Caught te local bus to a bar (Joe Josts) in the sticks, Jac saw a T.Shirt advertising the bar in Honolulu and decided he couldn't go home without one. That was an experience ... read more

Our last day at "The Happiest Place on Earth". Gates opened at 10am today thank goodness so we could sleep in a bit. Had assumed that because it was Monday, the crowds would be less than the weekend, and it would be a good day to go - but I think everyone else had the same idea 'cos man, it was BUSY!!! And it was drizzling slightly - I thought people stayed away in the rain (Nope!). Had a plan to revist all the favourites at least once then do some shopping, so we headed straight for Space Mountain - ooops, broken down. Back tracked to The Matterhorn to find the queue's a mile long, but moving quickly - until that ride breaks down. Not our lucky day.... Anyway the ride was soon up and running ... read more
