It hardly seems possible that only 3 weeks ago it never even occurred to me to go to France and now Erika and I are heading off to the airport for our flight..... Since the flight wasn't until late afternoon we decided to work until noon. We then headed to my house where Mom and Dad were to drive us to the airport. After a few last minute details and instructions to Mom and Dad about Matthew we threw the suitcases in the truck and headed out. We arrived at IAH airport at about 2:00 pm and got checked in pretty quickly. Since we were there with lots of time to spare we had some lunch at Subway and excitedly chattered on about all the things we were going to do and how we couldn't believe ... read more

The past 3 days have been wonderful for bicycling, so we are taking advantage of this. The colder, cloudy and sometimes rainy weather is to return tomorrow. On Valentine's Day we went to Austin. The visitor's center sent us to a bicycle shop to get better information than they had. So here we were at the bike shop Lance Armstrong frequents in Austin, his home town. In fact he had just been there earlier in the morning! And the day before he blasted past a friend of the guy in the bike shop on the roads in the hill country. He had also "stolen" the bike shops mechanic for his own. At the shop, as we came back from our ride, a fellow who looked like Lance, pulled his black sports car back so we could ... read more

This is only the 2nd day we have seen the sun since we arrived in Texas.Jim and I have been busy however. First we have explored the Hill Country, visiting LBJ's boyhood home,(we were too late to visit his ranch). We watched as art glass was made in Wimberley, and bicycled the Guadalupe River Valley. We happened on the river road accidently and rode most of it with no traffic at this time of year. In San Antonio we rode the trolley all over town, had dinner at Landry's on the Riverwalk and attended the San Antonio Symphony. This was our Valentine's Day Celebration. The symphony is very good, (but not as good as the Pittsburgh!) The Majestic Theatre where they play is a part of the fun. It is very heavy, dark Spanish mission(mostly)and reminded ... read more

On Sunday, February 13th it was 75 and sunny! We biked among the 4 missions along the San Antonio River, south of town and up into the city to the restored historic homes along the river closer to town. It was good biking everywhere. Trails are best but not often available, so city streets with low traffic or country roads work well also. In the mission ruins I could see the beauty everywhere. I just wish I had had more time and more memory space! It was a glorious ride. ... read more

We have several bike rides planned as soon as the threat of heavy rain storms diminish. Like you we have been having warmer weather but with lots of clouds and rain. we have been busy exploring Texas. On Saturday, we took off for Austin, hoping to attend a concert in Austin that evening. Austin calls itself "the live music capital of the world", with good reason. We stopped at a flea market only to discover we were the only"gringos" there. Jim found a good Mexican restaurant, "Pappasito's" that he remembered from business trips. It was the best Mexican food I ever tasted and I ate it all! After driving around the capitol complex in Austin, we parked the car, to go on foot. We found a newly restored Driscoll Hotel in the middle of town. While ... read more

Horses, cows, calves, bulls, clowns, cowboys and cowgirls. . . We attended the Los Fresnos PRCA 16th Annual Rodeo. We arrived a little early so walked around the carnival grounds and found some food booths. Kathy had a turkey leg and Will picked a briquette sandwich. The wrap the turkey leg in tinfoil and put it over a mesquite wood grill. The meat is so juicy and just melts in your mouth. We watched the hog judging while we ate. The Rodeo started about 3pm with the bull rides. Then came the roping events and the bucking horses. Last was the barrel racing the girls go. We watched world champions like Guy Allen, steer roper, Speed Williams, team roper, Monte Lewis, tie-down roper, Dustin Elliott, bull rider and Kelly Kaminski, barrel racer. The entertainment was Allen ... read more

After 3 days of travel on the interstates, with heavy truck traffic, Jim and I arrived in Texas. My first impression of Texas is it is BIG and with lots of WIDE OPEN SPACES. So far it is also flat with big billboards everywhere. It is also booming. Austin is fast growing and up-to-date. In the pitch dark, we hunted for "Joy's Country Cabin". I can't imagine a better place than this lovingly restored pioneer cabin for exporing Austin, San Antonio and the Texas Hill Country. It is Texas Rustic, but with all modern conveniences. The hill country is between the two cities. Our cabin is near Sequin a small town near Rt.10 northeast of San Antonio. The weather is in the 50's, and it is sunshining right now. In Texas this can vary, especially when ... read more

I know you are probably wondering what happened to us. Did we fall into a black hole? Of course not, but there have been a lot of changes. And I do mean a lot. We are both in Iraq now. But that’s the last part of the story. Here is all that happened in between. Sunday saw us flying to Houston for our job processing. The company put us up in a very nice hotel, fed us 3 times a day and subjected us to medical exams and a multitude of informational briefings while they determined if we were KBR material. Sunday arrived and it turned out to be a very long day. Up at 4AM and at the Medford airport by 5AM. Took off at 6AM. Had enough of a layover in Phoenix to get ... read more
