Hola out there in blogland! So after countless hours spent on skype, mucho dinero spent on airline flights, and 8 months of long distance...we are finally happy and together in Costa Rica. May this blog help you get a closer look at our adventures and allow you to share alongside with us, as we explore, live, learn, love, grow, and give in the land of the ticos. Both Peter and Ilene will use this blog, so stay tuned for entries written separately, and some written together. (So don't worry, we will write in English, Czech & Spanish!) Also, we hope this joint-blog will give you a chance to get to know each of us better. Please feel free to comment...ask questions...request typical Costa Rican dish recipes... :) And, most of all: COME VISIT!!! Happy reading! Besos, ... read more

So, one of the Colombia's problems are its' mines. Children who aren't aware will pick up a friendly object such as a doll, or ball--innocuous items that turns out to be bombs! How could someone be so evil?! Some of our donations that went to a group to help fight against this cause: On a more upbeat note: I am now back in the states. Spending some time with the family, and October back to working for 1 month and then in November will be in Asia for 3 weeks with my best friends!! ... read more

OK… it’s been aaaaaaaaaaages since the last update. No apologies though, coz it was simply too busy and hectic. Don’t even remember when the last update was… nearly 2 months ago I guess. Well, a lot has been happening in the Big D since then… Djeez… where to start! Well, we have moved into our new place about a month ago now. And we are absolutely loving it! It’s in a great neighbourhood, lots of trees, and a very “village” like feeling make us almost feel like being back in Barendrecht, haha!! It is true though, it feels like a very small community, not what we were expecting at all from a city with 6+ million people living here! It’s a lot more comfortable than our “holiday apartment” in St Kilda (one of Jackie’s friends stayed ... read more

So I walked into my apartment today at 20:00, exhausted from going all over the world running errands. As I unlocked my door, a deep, weighty, sense of dread hit me...or maybe that was just the huge backpackers backpack I threw on the floor (my recent purchase from Academy Sports and Outdoors). In truth, it was less of a sense of dread and more of a mild freak-out. I mean seriously, what in the world did I call myself doing?! Traveling to Costa Rica by myself for 11 days with absolutely no plans, no friends, and no definite place to go?! To understand the scope of what I'm dealing with, you must understand my previous travel experience. While plentiful (we took a family vacation outside the country generally once a year), all our family vacations were ... read more

And so the drama continues. I have been working and traveling so much for work that I don't know what is up from down. My most recent trip that compelled me to blog was a trip to St. Louis. One week prior to a conference being held there I found out I was to attend. The ASAE conference is for Association Executives. These are big wigs for associations who also happen to be deicsion makers for association confrerences, ie a time to shine for St. Louis. Upon arrival, there were multiple volunteers welcoming us to the city. From the tie I stepped off the plane until the time I stepped back on it I could not have felt more welcome. They treated this city as if it were their Super Bowl, and it showed. Our opening ... read more

Well... there we are, welcome to the "Big D", the city in Texas where everything is BIG. The city where the thermometers are big to cope with the extremely high temperatures (have been here just over a week and temperature hasn't dropped below 38C or 95F), the city where the fake boobies are REALLY big (excuse my French, but I am a guy and with these high temperatures and resulting skimpy clothes they do stand out... and there are many of them too, so no use in trying not to see them!), the city where cars and portion sizes are of course big, and I can go on like that for a little while... anyway, let me try and give you a quick update on what has happened over the past week. The flight over to ... read more

So this is the first blog-post-thing I've ever done and I'm trying to figure everything out. Bear with me! I haven't started packing and I leave in a week, which I'm sure is fine, but still...I'm getting nervous.... read more

Wednesday 22nd June 2011 We had a filling breakfast this morning, 2 egg omelette plus a freshly made waffle with fruit, jam and then covered in maple syrup! Not the healthiest breakfast but certainly tasty! Once again the Ramada Plaza Hotel surpassed our expectations. The trip to the airport was easier than Rags anticipated, Judy plotting a course which was shorter, and not through the city. Once there, the hire car was returned without fuss and we were taken by bus to the departure terminal. Denver airport is huge, but they have set it up very well and everything flows smoothly. After check-in we discovered that having an ANZ Platinum American Express card did not get you into the American Airline lounge as we were led to believe, and sadly returned to the rest of the ... read more

I have decided to start a blog both before and during my trip to Egypt. As anyone around me can tell you, I am extremely excited about my trip! :) I am also extremely nervous and anxious at the same time. Can you imagine being married for an entire year to someone and never meeting their mother, father or sister? This is the situation I am in and it's got me mixed up in all kinds of emotions! hehe. We are about 85% prepared for our trip and wedding, with some minor details remaining...don't even get me started on packing!! :S I HATE PACKING!! Today my work threw a bridal shower for me, it was awesome!!! :) I received many needed items from my registry, plus cash and giftcards. My team at work is the most ... read more
