As the women lay in bed, the men got up and went to work. It was now Leannes US birthday and she was seeing how far she could stretch this. Today we were heading back into the park to the very remote shores of Bowman Lake to camp and kayak. So Joe and Matt carefully loaded the 4 sea kayaks onto the roof of the truck and with 4 strong coffees in hand we headed along the long and very bumpy, dusty road to Bowman Lake. We made several stops along the way to check that neither the truck roof or the kayaks had decided to leave us. An extra stop was added in at Polebridge, a town of 2 buildings, a pub and a general store with the most amazing bakery. To keep tradition alive ... read more

What a Great Day!

After a night of gasping for fresh air through our thick fly screen, we awoke to hear the sound of pouring rain so our early start was slightly delayed for a small sleep in. Today our plan was to hike up to Iceberg Lake. This trail had only opened the day before after being closed due to numerous sighted bears. After a quick breakfast the weather looked like it was turning for the better. We headed off through very dense forest with the lovely smell of fresh rain on pine. There were plenty of people on the track jingling bells and making noise, so we were not at all concerned about bumping into Yogi or BooBoo. There was not as much wildlife on this walk as yesterdays but we did bump into a timid coyote that ... read more

A 6.30am start as we had a 5 hour drive ahead and Sarah wanted us to get to Glacier National Park in time for an evening hike. No time to rest in Montana. Too much to see! The drive up was awesome. Crossing the state we could see how unpopulated Montana is. The farmers were in the middle of hay making mode which created a very picturesque setting of rows of round hay stacks dotted around the paddocks, and always with a backdrop of mountains in the distance. You can never escape wildlife in Montana and even surrounded by farms there were plenty of wild deer to be spotted. We were to stay in the middle of Glacier National Park at an area called Many Glacier. So we got to our park run motel where we ... read more

Today we were able to take advantage of the park buses to drive to Logan Pass so we could hike from the pass to Hidden Lake. Not having to drive on Going to the Sun Road with the construction was very welcomed. With water and sweatshirts we ventured up to Logan Pass. It was a good thing Amy reminded the girls to take their sweatshirts since there were still acres of snow several feet thick in most areas of the hike. It is amazing how some people dress to go for a hike in the snow (incredible since it is July), flip flops, sandals, dresses and platform sandals. Amy was quite the nervous nelly as the girls hiked up the snow and especially the side of the mountain (see picture). Amy was able to successfully navigate ... read more

Hi everyone, Just when you think you have seen all there is to see in scenery and wild motorcycle riding, along comes Glacier National Park! It was not disappointing to say the least. As my title suggests, it was breath-taking, spectacular, inspiring, nerve-wracking, and at times I was questioning my reason for taking the Glacier National Park "Going To The Sun" road. I will get to that in a minute, but first the preliminaries. I spent the night outside of Spokane, Washington and decided to get an early start on the ride to Glacier. First stop was Sandpoint, Idaho. Nestled at the base of the Selkirk Mountains in North Idaho's Panhandle region, Sandpoint can be found 60 miles south of the Canadian border and 75 miles northeast of Spokane. The 6,000 residents enjoy the uncompromising natural ... read more

Avalanche Lake hike, What we thought was going to be a short hike, turned into an all day affair. Our hike stared at the trail of the red cedars, then we decided to go on to Avalanche Lake. It was a great hike through the woods and we were able to see so great views of the Rockies. The hike took longer than expected due to the girls stopping and playing in the water, but who could blame them. The hike to the lake is about 2.3 miles each way. To keep us entertained “Steve Erchle” (Emma) was pointing out various flora and fauna, and whether we were approaching a decline in the path or an "upcline." As our hike took us on to Avalanche lake we saw several mule deer, they must be getting very ... read more

Because we haven't been in a car enough yet, we decided to pay extra for a day long tour with the old people! Actually, it was a great day...we got to see so much of the park, and Shawn didn't have to drive! We traveled in a 1936 open roofed 17 passenger bus. It gave us incredible views of the mountains. The tour went across Going to the Sun Road, which is truly the most beautiful thing we've ever seen. The driver gave us facts along the way, and we got to "pop up" (aka stick our head out of the roof, says Emma) and look at all the sights. Weather in Glacier is so strange...we started off freezing to death in the topless bus, and ended buying a souviener blanket at one of the lodges. ... read more

We made it!! We got here at about 2:00 on Saturday. It is absolutely amazing. Our campground is very nice, with a view of the mountains right from our site. We've had some trouble with our internet connection, so we're a little behind posting. We are about 3 miles from the West enterance to Glacier National Park. We went to the park for a quick hike around McDonald Lake, which was beautiful. The weather is perfect so far... in the 80s during the day with no humidity. Nothing but blue skies. ... read more

We made the trip up to Great Falls from Grand Teton. We planned this so we did not have to spend too much time in the car prior to getting to Glacier national Park. We were staying in a small cabin (shed) at a campsite just outside of Great Falls. Too far to walk for a beer so we had to bring it in along with a local delicacy (take away pizza). There was entertainment at the campsite - well two locals playing a selection of bluegrass and country songs. It was good in some areas and not so good in others - the jokes and the in between song banter. They were somewhat reminiscent of the "duelling banjoes" scene in the Deliverance. In fact, a request to play that song was received and approved, our ... read more

Great sleep last night. Yet another nice sunny day. Got away at a reasonable time as didn't want to be too late and start running into the day visitors. It was supprisingly quiet out on the road, a pleasant supprise. made the best of it for some photo shoots along the way, it was good being able to just stop where I wanted (within reason) and not have to worry about other traffic. One thing that was quite noticable about galcier national Park was the absence of much in the way of glaciers. There are a few small ones but nothing to get excited about. The NPS expect that the remaining ones won't last many more years either. Maybe they should rename it "formed by glaciers national Park"? Either way it is still a beautiful place ... read more
