Shortly After seeing my brothers off my friend Amanda came to pay me and Montana State University a visit! During her visit we got to see a very rare sight in Yellowstone, A Grizzly Bear and a Grey Wolf pack fighting over the carcass of a dead bison about three miles from us! We ran into a bunch of Wolf Watchers with their spotting scopes and hung out with them for a bit and watched the wolves and the bear duke it out for a couple of hours. Here is a little hint on seeing wildlife in Yellowstone: Don't watch the woods or the horizon for animals and movement, watch for the people. There are so many dang people, that when one person sees an animal, it really causes a traffic dilemma, so just pull ... read more

To become aquainted with the Travelblog and learn how to use it I will publish several of our previous trips. In September 2005, Karen, Amber and Wayne loaded up the old pickup camper and headed west to Glacier National Park and other places west of the Mississippi. Our first stop was in Detroit Lakes, MN. to visit Mom Gjersvig and sister and brother-in-law; Karen and Gary. The next day we drove to Western North Dakota and stayed at Teddy Roosevelt National Park (Northern Section). This is Bad Land country. We continued west into Big Sky country. Teddy Roosevelt Visited Ft. Peck dam and reservoir. (I wish I had my boat with). Found a very nice RV park in Havre for a good night's rest. Arrived Glacier in time to get a camp site at Sunrise camp ... read more

Well following on from the last blog, we were happy trecking though the rockies crashing bikes and generally getting cold and hurt. The main plan of the travels was to pick up 3 more back packers to use them for their gas money and travel Canada. So off we head to backpacker central, BANFF. Well in true wenzel style we turn up in october, the slowest month for backpackers. Its not hot, or cold so it just rains and there was no hope of picking up backpackers!!! Still really nice ski village though with amazing mountains. I am deffinately glad i have a ski pass there for the winter and am spending Christmas there so cant wait. Time to rethink however!!! Canadian gas was working out a little on the expensive side so we decided to ... read more

This morning we were again visited by the local “wildlife reception committee” aka Rocky and Rockette the local squirrels… One was so brazen that Carl though it was actually going to come into our cabin!.. Unfortunately, this was after we had again awoken to the plop, plop, plop of rain on our roof… Only this time, we were safe and dry in a cabin that even had heat! The ST. Mary's campground is huge and, as indicated on it's webpage, very seldom fills up. We really didn't care where we parked but actually got what we considered the prime spot. Lots of nice trees and brush, no nearby campers, no campfire smoke and easy walking distance to a toilet. Flush, no less. There were a few mosquitoes but we headed to bed soon after pulling in so we saw only the stars out the screened window. We slept in clear til 7 the next morning but did want to beat the other tourists to the narrow road we knew awaited us the other side of the summit. The trip through Glacier was relatively uneventful except for the noticeable lack of much of the glaciers we'd seen just seven years ago. The pictures tell the ... read more

Today the sun came up. I was in a tent and not an outhouse. In a very short period of time, I set my picnic table on fire, apparently stepped on a slug, and lost a vital piece to my camp stove. I seached in the mud for a long time to find the little stove valve (a tiny rubber ball), which I lost while fixinig the stove (so as not to set more things on fire). All I found was some sticks, many pine needles, small rocks, a few bbs, some bread twist-ties, and eventually the dead slug on the bottom of my shoe. It is very likely that the small rubber ball was carried to a new location via slug guts. I was desperate enough to peel the slug from my shoe and search ... read more

Hi all. Posting from Beautiful Glacier National Park. The travel through Jasper and down the Canadian Rockies was just gorgeous! Many memorable sights and sounds. In Banff NP we got one of our best camping spots of the trip.. in their overflow no less. Gently sloped valley nestled between two mountain ranges, slowly sinking sun. Very nice. At least it’s getting dark here! Man! For a while I thought Alaska was going to drive me nuts… on the night of 6/21 there was just too much light. Here in Montana it’s nicely dark by midnight or so. Raeann and I are continuing to have a nice trip. Thinking more about heading home, but not real set on that. Today we did and all-day float on the Middle Fork of the Flathead River..same one Julia and Lara ... read more

Hi everyone, I know that it’s been a long time since my last post but trying to find a wireless connection out here is like trying to find a needle in a haystack. The past week has been amazing. We drove the entire length of the Alaskan Highway and saw some beautiful wildlife, grizzly bears, black bears, buffalo, stone sheep, mountain goats, and a coyote. The highlight for me was seeing two young grizzly cubs eating and playing on a hillside, they were truly beautiful. The drive was long at times but so strikingly beautiful that it made up for it! After the Alaskan highway we made our way into Alberta, Canada to Jasper and Banff National Park. They were so different than I had expected- there was a very European and French feel to the ... read more
