So Bill left yesterday...vacation over. I am officially here and working. Working hard. I'm a breakfast cook so normal day I'm up at 530. For those of you who don't know me, getting up that early is ludacris. The owner, my boss, is so incredibly anal and OCD. She trained me to do prep work and spent 20 min showing me how to take out the trash. Painful. I'm sure once I get into the swing and she backs out of the equation, things will be easier. The restaurant opened yesterday and I was cooking. I loved it! I can alreadly tell I'm going to run the kitchen... I'm starting to warm up to the staff, but everyone is so familiar to me. I know them all from somewhere, I swear. I see qualities and quirks ... read more

So we arrived on Thursday, it was raining. It was snowing as we drove through the mountains, but mostly just raining... it's still raining. Poor Bill. It's supposed to stop raining pretty shortly after he leaves. We both blame him. He even offered to leave early if it would bring the sunshine, he's sweet like that. We went to Canada today...for lunch. The border is only twenty minutes away. Afterwards we sucked it up and went hiking in the park (in the rain). The fog has been pretty thick. I've been told that I'm surrounding by the most breathtaking scene. From the bits and pieces of it I've seen I'm looking forward to Bill's departure (only so the rain will stop). Rain and all, we're having a great time. Bill officially hasn't done anything work related ... read more

This is a great park with different personalities on the east and west sides. It is 1,600 square miles and was created in 1910. We spent 5 days exploring the park and could have spent many more. We began on the west side of the park at the Apgar Campground on Lake McDonald. The fall colors were beautiful with the yellows and gold against the dark green evergreens. The campgrounds were closing down for the season or switching to primitive camping. We had lots of campsites to choose from. This was a great time to be at the park with fewer people, fall colors and cooler weather. Unfortunately there are less organized activities and tours to take advantage of this late in the season. It was fascinating to see changes occurring in preparation for the winter, ... read more

Onaxthiel writes- Our night at Gunsight was very comfortable. The predicted rain never developed and once out of the wind, the bivys were certainly warm enough to keep us content for the night. The sunrises we have seen in mountain valleys are a bit different from those at lower points. The tops of the mountains take on a red tint when the sky is still rather dark, and there is no change in the clouds to the east and then suddenly BOB breaks the horizon and it's a new day. The sun just doesn't herald its coming for you like it does down below. The deer from the night before was still hanging around, so we played more range-deer games with him. After driving him out on foot twice, we decided to have Obfuscator (wearing the ... read more

April 26: Arrived in St. Mary at the KOA Campground and Glacier National Park where we will be for the summer. The campground is large and very well kept for a rustic site. The mountains are still covered with snow which makes a beautiful site. Had dinner the first night at the Duck Lake Lodge, food was good and the service was slow. This seemed to be the way things are done here in Montana, from the time we arrived and left the service was the same at the Lodge. The day we arrived the wind was blowing so hard that Art was having a problem holding the motor home on the road and did not stop blowing for several days. Art will be working in maintenance and I am working at the registration desk and ... read more

Obfuscator writes: We woke up pretty dry and pleased with ourselves. Since all our gear was dry, we didn't have to waste any time in moving out of our camp. We filled our water jugs, and went back to the Ranger office where we obtained our backcountry permit, and signed up for a campsite at Gunsight Lake, which we had been told on both sides of the park was a worthwhile hike. It's also interesting to note that unlike at Yellowstone and TR National Parks, backcountry camping permits at Glacier cost 5 dollars per person. That's really not a bad price or anything, but it was a bit surprising that the park I have come to think of as incredibly expensive was in fact, cheaper than Glacier in almost every way. Glacier just had fewer people ... read more

Obfuscator writes: We hiked out of our spot at Snyder Lake with little fuss. We had seen most of what there was to see. All the surrounding areas were mountains, and so there wasn't much off-trailing to do that looked interesting enough that we were also well enough equipped to do. It went much faster going down than it had going up, and was still scenic. We had already seen most of it though, so there were a lot fewer picture opportunities. We got back to our car and unloaded stuff, and found a note with an email from the nice hiker lady on our windshield, so that we could discuss hiking gear further. It also had a local restaurant recommendation to be able to avoid the typical touristy food. We moseyed back to the Ranger ... read more

Obfuscator writes: We checked out of our motel in Choteau at a reasonable time in the morning. Since we knew it wasn't that much further to Glacier, we stopped in at a local restaurant for some breakfast. Onaxthiel says that the pancakes were quite splendid. The French toast was ok. I don't remember the name of the restaurant, but if you find yourself in Choteau, just look for the only family restaurant on Main Street. After that we began our drive to Glacier. As we approached Browning Montana, the previous day's rain gave way to snow, and the vehicles we saw going the other way were surprisingly coated in it. We later found out in a ranger station that in part of the park they had got two feet of snow that night. Browning is the capitol ... read more

When one of the guys from my crew mentioned his plan to climb a mountain this weekend, I couldn’t hide my enthusiasm and practically begged to tag along. I’ll take any opportunity to get out on a trail in Glacier National Park. Jake hesitated, “Are you sure? It is a 10,000-footer.” I was insulted. Of course I can handle a good steep hike, and yes, I’m definitely in. I had no clue. Friday morning I woke up bright-eyed and bushy-tailed. After filling our day packs with water, trail mix, cheese and beer, six of us Montana Conservation Corps volunteers piled into the CRV and headed for Glacier—we were a regular clown show. After our stretch circle and a pit stop in the bushes, we hit the trail. We walked among the pines, and I gobbled in ... read more
