Geo: 48.6829, -113.799Sunday, October 12th - From St. Mary drove up GTTS Rd. and hiked from the Sun Point Nature trail on by Baring Falls, St. Mary Falls, then to Virginia Falls (icy) then back to Sun Point. Drove to East Glacier looking for motel, but none were available, so drove on to the Izaak Walton Lodge (expensive and no TV) in Essex, MT, along the Southern edge of the park. Asked at the desk there and was directed to the Glacier Haven Inn (cheaper and with a TV) for the night. Dinner was at Izaak Walton Inn dining room. The inn is a really nice place but right on the side of the railroad. Many trains pass very close - so nice place if you like trains. Originally built by the RR company in the ... read more

Geo: 48.6829, -113.799Saturday, October 11th - Attempted hike to Bertha Falls in Waterton Lakes NP but it was too snowy. Drove back to Many Glacier, hiked around Swiftcurrent Lake then did Apikuni Falls trail. Drove on to St. Mary. Motel - Red Eagle Motel - interesting place. No one on duty but sign said rooms available with a phone # to call. We called and got a room - we were the only ones there. On checking into the room, Anne looked out the window and noticed water pouring from the second floor. Turned out to be frozen pipes on second floor, fortunately not affecting our room. The motel had a TV - with two very fuzzy stations. All this for $80 per night - but an experience and maybe better than $250 at the only ... read more

Back once again in the States we stayed overnight in a little hick town called High River where we had to access the internet to book Lani a shuttle from LA to Irvine. At Calgary airport it was going to cost her $25 to use the internet but she only had 15 mins to use it…so instead decided to use her parents….what would we do without mobile phones and internet??? On to Ft McLeod to see the Mountie Museum, then to Head Smashed in Buffalo Jump where there is an excellent museum that details the history of the Indians and the demise of the buffalo. We actually stood under the cliffs where the buffalo stampeded …it’s hard to imagine that we could be standing on thousands of buffalo bones. The places we stop at are of ... read more

What a room! We awaken to find out exactly why the room we acquired last night, under our dire circumstances, cost what it did, even with the discount they gave us. As we step out on to the balcony, there is a creek running along that side of this Great Bear Lodge. We heard it through the night but seeing the clear water run over the stones and rock was a morning greeting. There are trees in full color immediately beyond the creek and then, the trees are surrounded with a full back view of Glacier mountains. We have coffee on the balcony, watching shadows dance along the mountains as the sun works its way higher in the sky. We decide the room and ambiance are well worth the rate and since we have been well ... read more

We got moving slowly this morning. Boy, was it windy! Whitecaps were out on the lake and the stove had a hard time heating water. Greg used the other stove as a windbreak to let the flames hit the pot. We're back to oatmeal and hot chocolate after 2 days of cereal, muffins, and toast (at the hotel). I packed up most of the camp and boy was I proud! Greg reminded me how to help put the tent away. It was extra tough with the windy conditions because everything kept blowing all over the place. As we were leaving we saw a family of mule deer near a camper. We got so close! (but in the car of course). A child from the camper was wandering around near the deer (within 5 feet). We told ... read more

Well, we used our inginuity to download photos to the web. Greg's inginuity, really, since my work laptop doesn't have the right drivers for my camera (or enough disk space). So Greg wrote up the travel journal and we should be able to post it for friends and family. We drove out of Calgary, AB this morning. Said goodbye to the rockies and hello to big sky / farm country. You wouldn't believe the farmland out here - it stretches for miles. Near Ft. Macleod we saw a large wind farm in the distance and 1 tower up close. They are very large and impressive. The clouds are huge, white and fluffy on the drive... Just like an idillic scene from a western in Kansas w/ the farmhouses, the land and the clouds. We're approaching the ... read more

Hungry!

A great nights sleep at EconoInn and we were ready for breakfast and a day of scenery that would hopefully be the highlight of this part of the road trip.At breakfast we chatted with a couple from Iowa who were also on a road trip but to Portland.Don't think they really knew where NZ was but never mind we told them how beautiful the country was.In the car park as I was packing the car a Vietnam vet asked me how the car was going and a 15min chat ensued about Kiwis he had served with in 'Nam.Interesting guy who said he was affected by Agent Orange and couldnt get a job. We headed off towards Whitefish a ski resort north of Kalispell and took in the "town beach"lifeguard tower and all.Strange for a beach so ... read more

Stunning mountain scenery

Going-to-the-Sun Scenic Road The most famous highlight of Glacier National Park is the Going-to-the-Sun Road. The scenic drive is considered one of the most spectacular in America. I suggest that this is a don't-look-down kind of drive. Just pull off when you do, and you'll be fine, well maybe I still have trouble looking down. There are plenty of reasons to stop and park such as wildflower meadows, alpine vistas, and abundant wildlife. Going-to-the-Sun Road splits the northern and southern halves of Glacier National Park in two and crosses the Continental Divide at Logan Pass (6,646 feet). It climbs over the Continental Divide at Logan Pass. The most stunning section is the sheer western face of the divide below the pass. Many beautiful waterfalls can be seen in this area as well as wonderful alpine views. ... read more
