July 5, 2010 I am writing to you from the car. Things at glacier didn’t go as well as we had hoped. Our first 6.5 miles of our hike were amazing. You will see pictures of that, and I still look happy. I was, I was happy the whole first half. I was happy when we were looking at the beautiful river and waterfalls. I was happy when were viewing the glaciers on the mountain top. I was happy when we were sitting at that glaciel lake. I was happy looking at all the different colors of wild flowers (purple daisies!). I was happy singing The Bills Shout song to alert the bears of our arrival. I was very happy until we took out our sandwiches and it started pouring. The temperatures dropped to about 40 ... read more

Day 9 Glacier National Park WOW! They say that pictures can say a thousand words.....I hope that our photos will give everyone a small understanding of the amazing beauty that we witnessed today!! We started our day early . . . 6:45 AM . . . I thought we were on vacation! We drove the “Going to the Sun” road and saw an amazing view at every turn. This road was built in 1926 using primarily pick and shovel. The surveyors repelled from mountain tops to mark where to blast and it was hand tools from there on. Once the roadbed was roughed in steam shovels were able to help out. Even by today’s standards this road is an engineering marvel. Since its construction, the road has under gone only Band-Aid or maybe duct tape repairs. ... read more

Day 10 Glacier National Park Now that we have our “warm-up” hike under our belts its time to head out for something more demanding. We talked to a number of people for hike recommendations. Our waitress at the Glacier Lodge said she prefers the Many Glacier area when she hikes. The ranger at the visitors center in West Glacier suggested a few but seemed to like the hike to Iceberg Lake, which just so happens to be in the Many Glacier area of the park. It was five miles up and along a mountain side to a beautiful lake. A ten mile hike is a piece of cake right? Both of us have done running (jogging/walking) races longer than that, so, we figured it shouldn’t be much of a problem - we can do this! Let ... read more

We awoke to a beautiful day and got an early start. We drove from Coram, MT to the West Entrance to Glacier NP and up to Logan pass, then down the other side to the Jackson Glacier Overlook, where we had to turn back yesterday, and then back to the camp ground. The first part of the road ran along the south side of McDonald Lake which was still - - so we got several really nice reflection photos. Then it ran along McDonald Creek, which had several low waterfalls and a lot of rapids. The road was narrow, sometimes a little rough and had construction in places with significant waits. It frequently had no guard rails and no shoulder. But, what magnificent scenery ! ! ! We saw dozens of water falls, large and small, ... read more

Our morning started with a jolt with word from our son, Michael, that his house burned this morning. Thank God and smoke detectors they all got out safely. The house is a total loss, but no one was hurt. Praise God! We left the campground at 8am for Glacier National Park's western entrance. We stopped first at the visitor center, then got on Going-To-The-Sun Road. Our first stop was along McDonald Lake, which was very still in the remains of the early fog. Then on to McDonald Creek with its waterfalls, rapids and pale green color. We then started the climb to Logan Pass, the road narrow and winding, but so beautiful. The views of the valley below and the mountains above are breathtaking. And there are waterfalls everywhere in all sizes; long, narrow ones, wide ... read more

Going to the Sun Road was supposed to be open today, but it wasn't so we could only go up 13 miles from the east end. Never the less, it was beautiful. Took lots of pictures. Had a nice close up encounter with a Mule Deer doe - - she was grazing next to the trail we were walking - - she was only about 15 ft away. Gena and I walked all the way down to St. Mary Falls - - very pretty and well worth the walk, though it was a very long .8 miles each way! St Mary Lake was a beautiful blue color. There were lots of water falls. When we got back to the visitors center, we hooked up Magee's trailer and took off down US 89, intending to take MT ... read more

As it turned out, the Going to the Sun Road did not open this morning. When we got to the Park Gate, we were told they were shooting for a noon opening. We would only be allowed to drive thirteen miles up the road after we left the camper in the parking lot of the visitor center. We pulled off several times along St. Mary Lake with its towering mountains and emerald green water. Of course the overlook at Wild Goose Island is one of my favorite spots. I think my very favorite is Sunrift Gorge/Baring Creek. That clear rushing water coming through that narrow vertical gorge just delights my senses. The creek moves quickly down from there, making multiple waterfalls, curling under the bridge and tumbling on to St. Mary Lake. At Jackson Glacier overlook ... read more

We got up this morning to clearer skies after last night’s rain. We closed up the campers and drove back to Lake Louise to see the sun on the glaciers and the water of the lake. The clouds had snuck back in, but the view was still spectacular. We went back for the campers and headed south to the town of Banff. I erred in not choosing the more scenic Bow Valley Parkway, choosing instead the Trans-Canada Hwy. It was faster, but not as pretty. We did catch a glimpse of a black bear and her two cubs. From Banff we drove to Calgary, a large city of over a million people, with lots of traffic. Then we traveled south on Hwy 2 to the US border and into Montana. Hooray! Back in the USA. We ... read more

We were blessed with awesome weather today so decided to go up into the park for awhile. We are having dinner later with Montana Kerri, can't wait to see her. Going to the Sun Hwy. isn't open all the way yet. We drove up to Avalanche Pass and then back. They still have snow melting so once again the lakes and streams are full and beautiful. The pictures you see of the lodge are from Lake McDonald Lodge built in 1913. It is a beautiful well kept lodge. The lake you see is McDonald lake and the river that flows into it. After going as far as we could from the West entrance we stopped at Hungry Horse Dam. We got some more nice pics there. Montana is beautiful and so green! Yes, Kristen you would ... read more

I have had a couple of laid back days in the area. Just took it easy Tuesday still recovering from my run. Wednesday, I decided to go back into Glacier and do another hike. I decided to hike Otokiimo Lake. It is 5.2 miles one way and gains about 1,900 feet up the trail. It was a tough hike and I was really working to cover the distance. The clear blue green water of the lake made the tough walk up well worth it. The water was really cold. I decided to wade in and cool my feet after the long hike. I stopped at the Logan's Pass Visitor Center on the way back down the Going to the Sun Road. There were two mountain goats in the parking lot. I also found out that I ... read more
